    Stay Happy - Jurgen Depicker

    Self Image, Confidence

The way we perceive ourselves shapes our self-image. Our inner convictions are always decisive, not objectively observable characteristics. So self-image is an entirely subjective phenomenon. It has the greatest relevance for our destiny, because it decides our path in life: A positive view of one's own ego not only creates a high degree of self-respect; on the contrary, we also create opportunities for ourselves. With a negative self-image, on the other hand, we take chances. Because our self-image determines the extent of our self-confidence. Both are proportional to each other: the more positive the self-image, the more we trust ourselves. With sufficient self-confidence we are prepared for the most diverse challenges. We face them fearlessly and confidently, we cope with difficulties and adversities, we are not easily discouraged and we are persistent in pursuing our goals. This attitude often leads to success. Both self-image and self-confidence tend to reaffirm themselves over and over again. It is therefore extremely important that we shape our self-image with care. We must not allow others or chance to determine our beliefs.

After a certain age, what we believe about ourselves is our own responsibility. And everyone can learn to do something for their own self-esteem - as long as they are willing to take responsibility and think hard - sometimes very hard work of rethinking - and continue even after setbacks and slacks.

    The genesis of self-image

Science has yet to come up with a comprehensive theory of self-esteem. But one thing is certain: At the beginning of our lives we don't worry about our worth, we don't worry about whether we are lovable or talented. Instead, we are completely natural in the world, expressing our needs and feelings uncensored. There is no self-concept and therefore no self-respect. The self-image only emerges gradually on the basis of the feedback we receive from those around us. This feedback is never only positive. Even parents who love their children dearly tend to belittle their self-esteem unthinkingly. They send messages like: Can't you be quiet for five minutes?!, What's the matter now?, "Don't always be like that! ’ etc. The child must inevitably draw the conclusion: I’m not interesting to the grown-ups, I’m annoying, my feelings are inappropriate, etc. He understands that something is wrong with him and that he is therefore not fully open to love and Adult attention should count that there are conditions attached to it. The child must meet these conditions for love to return. It has no choice but to adapt, because it is existentially dependent on the love of its caregivers. Unfortunately, at the same time, the child adopts the standards of adults and can only love itself if it aligns its behavior with these standards. The child identifies with the expectations of the grown-ups and does not consider itself lovable the way it is. That's why it begins to stage itself and forgets its true self. The original self-evidence of being has been broken and has given way to fear:
