I am passionate about helping people achieve positive mental health so that they can lead rich and fulfilling lives.

I use relatable stories, metaphors and examples to help leaders understand their mental health and how they can optimise mental fitness to enable them to perform at their best. As a qualified mental health occupational therapist, speaker, coach and author, I work with businesses, organisations, schools and community groups to develop and implement positive mental health programs that will promote sustainable behaviours

I completed my PhD in 2011, and started Healthy Mind and Soul Pty Ltd in 2016. I’ve worked in public and private settings for over two decades and bring a wealth of knowledge and practice wisdom to the work that I do.

I love to share my knowledge to empower others and have given presentations at a variety of mental health conferences nationally and internationally – in Australia, Canada, the United States, Britain and New Zealand.

I live in regional Victoria, Australia. I value my mental health and often go bushwalking or to a day spa to help me to de-stress.

I believe it is through our leaders that we can improve the mental health and wellbeing of everyone in our world.

    Introduction

Have you ever headed into your office, closed the door, sat quietly at your desk, and thought to yourself, ‘Why aren’t other people as dedicated to this company as I am?’

As you sit there pondering, you are aware of your level of exhaustion, which you have learnt to push to the side.

The long hours of work, the missed lunch breaks, the sleepless nights, the constant need of high-level energy to keep everyone’s motivation up, including yours – all this effort can bring great reward, but it can also come at a huge cost.

As a leader, you work hard every day. You make sure you are available to the staff. You show how dedicated you are about the organisation, and others even comment on your level of motivation and enthusiasm. You have a clear vision that you share with all. You have a great elevator pitch and can speak about your organisation, comfortably, articulately, and with passion and conviction, without any preparation or forewarning. You would never ask others to do more than you would expect of yourself.

    ..............................

And yet, you are now wondering if this leadership position was really worth all the hard work it took you to get there.

    ..............................

Now, let’s add in some external challenges – say, a global financial crisis, or a pandemic, which overnight can change the entire way you operate and do business. If your mental health is already at its limit, how can you stretch yourself to be able to adapt and survive massive challenges such as these?

But it’s not just these once-in-a-lifetime events that we need to be able to manage. The world is a constantly changing and evolving place. Every year brings new technology, new government policy direction, new markets, new knowledge and skills, and new generations of people. We need to be able to adapt in order to thrive. This takes creative and strategic thinking combined with energy. These qualities become available if we are mentally healthy.

People who are stressed and run down have lower productivity, are less likely to meet targets, and are more likely to make mistakes, all of which can impact performance and profitability. The candle can only be burnt at both ends for so long.

As a leader, you are consciously aware of how important it is to confidently present yourself as the face of the organisation. This is not only for the benefit of those inside the organisation, to motivate them to perform at their best, but also for those outside the organisation, so they will connect and engage with your services.

    ..............................

Hence, your mental health impacts your productivity and performance, and sets the tone for how your workforce looks after their wellbeing.

    ..............................

Here’s the good news. Thankfully, learning to manage your mental health does not have to be difficult. Change is difficult, but the strategies known to promote positive mental health and wellbeing are in themselves simple and effective.

When you learn to manage your mental health you will feel better, and, in turn, you will perform better.

Think about it. When you come back from some time off and are properly rested – you have been active and eating well, have had some fun with friends – you have a spring in your step, your brain is pinging, and you are excited to get back into your work. We need to be like this every day, not
