Artificial Intelligence Boon or Bane? - Dr. Yash Paul Soni
CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Artificial intelligence also known as AI is the duplication of the human intelligence in machines. These machines are therefore required to think, mimic, and act like humans. Aside from this, artificial intelligence can also be associated with machines that carry out functions which often are carried out by the human mind, such functions may include solving problems, perception, or learning something new.
One of the main aspects of artificial intelligence is the fact that it’s able to rationalize and take the required actions when needed so that it can achieve a specific goal. Artificial intelligence incorporates a number of other aspects to help it maximize on its abilities. An example of such subset is machine learning. In machine learning computer programs are able to learn as well as adapt towards new data which are presented to it without obtaining any help from humans.
Often times, when we hear about artificial intelligence one aspect that rings in our minds is robots. However, this is not far from the truth and yet still it’s not the whole truth. Robotics is part of the larger artificial intelligence and not its core part as it’s mainly believed. The principle of artificial intelligence is that human intelligence can be easily mimicked by machines so that it can help execute tasks. These tasks vary from simple tasks which can be performed by weak AI, to complex tasks which needs strong AI to be meticulously performed. In order for artificial intelligence to be carried out precisely as expected, it needs to mimic the cognitive ability of the human mind.
Over the years, artificial intelligence has greatly evolved and researchers are making great strides in the field. In future it’s believed that the innovators are likely to create systems which possess greater capacity more than the human mind and its intelligence. This new system would be able to learn, reason, or perceive any subject or matter.
Constant development of technology has reshaped the field of AI; this is because in the past aspects in the computer such as basic functions of calculations and optical character text recognition were associated with artificial intelligence. However, at the moment such functions are not regarded as part of artificial intelligence; but rather common and basic computer functions. Artificial intelligence is growing rapidly across various fields. Therefore, machines are wired in an approach that is cross disciplinary while basing on computer science, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, among other disciplinary.
Artificial intelligence is divided into two main categories: strong and weak AI. Weak AI incorporates a system that is designated to execute a particular task. For instance, weak AI are beneficial in video games like chess, carrying out tasks of personal assistants like apple’s Siri or amazon Alexa. In this case, the assistants are asked simple questions in which they answer, or when asked to perform a task they perform easy tasks. Strong AI on the other hand incorporates systems that carry out complicated and complex tasks. These are human like tasks. In such cases, the systems are required to carry out complex tasks, solve complex problems without having any human intervention in the tasks. In such instances we experience artificial intelligence in tasks like self-driving motor vehicles, operating machines in hospital rooms, among others.
Artificial intelligence can be applied in a variety of fields. AI has been tested over a number of years and it has been proved that it can be applied in various industries. For instance, AI can be used in the health industry to help in the treatment of patients, surgical procedures in operating rooms, for dosing patients, among other uses. Additionally, machines with AI knowledge can also be used in car that self-drive. In all of these, machines that incorporate AI to carry out complex tasks need to thoroughly examine its end consequences. For instance, in self-driving motor vehicles, results need to be the system has to be accountable for every external data; so that it can be computed in a way which will prevent collision from occurring.
Apart from the above industries, AI can also be used in the finance industry whereby in helps in detecting and flagging unusual activities in the bank. These activities may include unusual usage of debit cards such large deposits. These information is crucial to the fraud department within the bank, so that it can stop illegal and criminal activities within the bank.
Human are no doubt the most important resource that steered the development of artificial intelligence. For this reason, machines and human need to work collaboratively to achieve the required results. This is despite the fact that most researchers are predicting that the growth and development of artificial intelligence is likely to replace the human workforce in several industries.
In order to enable full collaboration of machines and humans; businesses need to identify the intersection point that connect machines and humans. For artificial intelligence to be indeed successful humans need to ensure that they assist machines, this can be done in three main ways; training, explaining, and sustaining.
In training, algorithms in machine learning need to be adequately taught on the tasks that they are needed to perform. With this regard, huge sets of data are amassed to the machines to help in their training in whatever tasks they are required to do. With these huge data sets machine that aid in language translation are then taught how to identify and translate idiomatic expressions, whereas medical apps are taught how to precisely detect a particular disease and then recommend the appropriate dosage. Human with various knowledge in several fields are required when training machines to respond to their specific tasks. An example is Cortana Microsoft artificial intelligence assistant that underwent an extensive training program so as to develop the required personality, confidence, helpful and not bossy attitude. This training demanded the expertise of a number of individuals in the team for several hours, some part of the training team included poets, playwrights, and novelists.
In explaining artificial intelligence, AI is increasingly growing and for this reason, a number of people do not fully understand what it’s composed of and its effect to other humans. For instance, explanations need to be conveyed to medical practitioners on how AI reasoned in identifying a particular disease over the others or the dosage recommended to a patient. Similarly, explanation need to be conveyed to law practitioners in the decision that AI recommends in sentencing a criminal for an offense. Explaining will help other people understand how AI works, how AI places fees and rates, and thus eliminate the public perception that AI decisions are wrong, unfair or illegal.
Aside for the human function of training and explaining AI, humans are also required to sustain AI systems. These are individuals who are tasked to ensure that all AI systems are working as required, they are safe, and are carrying out their tasks responsibly. An example of such functions of sustaining AI is the work of safety engineers who anticipate harm likely to come for using AI in various industries, and prevent the harm from occurring. For example, individuals who developed industrial robots which are known to work with people have ensured that the robots are able to recognize human presence, and therefore not harm them.
It’s therefore no secret that machines need human to thrive and to register success because each needs the expertise of the other, and not that one party is required to replace the other.
Artificial intelligence has also been realized to positively affect emerging technologies such as; IoT, robotics, big data, among other AI technologies. Machine learning has been identified to be critical in the development of IoT (Internet of Things), in enabling it make its services and products smarter and thus more valuable to the consumers. By incorporating emerging technologies data obtained in businesses and other aspects of life become more valuable and tools that are cloud based become efficient. IoT enables capturing of huge amount of data from several sources. Despite this, analyzing and processing the multitude of data obtained is complex and therefore IoT with the help of other emerging technologies is able to process information that are crucial for several aspects in life. Similarly, AI is essential in giving robots the computer vision that they need to help them easily navigate, sense, as well as calculate all their reactions accordingly so that they do not harm anyone. Robotics has been noted to be important in various industries, as humans work together with the robots to carry out tasks efficiently and effectively.
Over the years there has been a number of controversy regarding AI on the overall life of humans. A number of ethical concerns has been raised regarding the effectiveness of artificial intelligence and the possibility of it being harmful to humans. For instance, there has constantly been controversy that machines are going to be greatly developed such that they will surpass the cognitive of humans, in such instance the human race will not be able to control nor keep up with the machines.
To add on that, self-driving cars have constantly been viewed in a controversial light, this is because its developers outline that the machine possesses the lowest risk possible with a small number of possible casualties. They indicate that if the car perhaps is faced with collision with another car or a person, it’s going to calculate an option that would result to the least damage. All these aspects are speculations and have not yet been fully verified.
This book our esteemed reader, is going to delve deeper into artificial intelligence and all its aspects, its benefits, and possible demerits that we are likely to get by embracing AI in our lives.
