About this ebook
If you are like most Pentecostals and Charismatic believers, you have probably heard the phrase, "The Azusa Street Revival." But how much do you know, or how much have you heard about Azusa Street? As a Bible teacher, and as a student of Church history, Mary Peninger became intrigued with the Azusa Street story. Azusa's story is one of the most powerful Revivals in Church History. Azusa Street was a Revival, which radiated from a mission house (which was a former livery stable). Azusa touched its world for Jesus Christ! So powerful was the Azusa Street Revival that its effects are still being felt today, over 110 years later! Mary wanted to share the Azusa Street story with other believers. She created (and taught) this short series of lessons as an introduction to Azusa Street. This book is a brief look back, a visit, to the Azusa Street Revival.

Chapter One
Welcome to Azusa Street
The Azusa Street Revival was a Spirit-Empowered, straight from the book of Acts Revival which occurred in Los Angeles, California between 1906 and 1909. The Revival that radiated from a broken-down, old abandoned building at 312 Azusa Street reached around the world! And, this Revival still transforms lives today – over 110 years later!
What was the Azusa Street Revival all about? To me, Azusa was the work of the mighty, awesome, powerful God Who chose to work through a variety of individuals who all had a common goal in mind—for revival to touch Los Angeles and the surrounding area. But, God is so powerful, so awesome that they simply did not fully realize the magnitude of their prayers. Truly they lived the words of Ephesians 3:20: Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
¹ The revival they prayed for not only touched Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, but that revival spread across the nation and around the globe!
In fact, the revival they prayed for has stood the test of time, and even today, more than a century later, individuals are still impacted by what happened at 312 Azusa Street. Today, there are an estimated six hundred million Spirit-filled believers worldwide (classical Pentecostalism and the charismatic movement). Most of those believers can trace their spiritual roots (directly or indirectly) back to the Azusa Street Revival!
Remarkably, Azusa Street is recognized as the catalyst of Pentecostal revival, which was re-ignited in the early twentieth century. And not only is Azusa the catalyst, it is the standard by which most (if not all) modern Pentecostal revivals are compared to.
But what is a revival, really? I have heard believers lament, We want revival. We need revival.
But does the average churchgoer fully realize what revival really is? Revival is God’s dramatic intervention in our lives. It awakens us and shakes up the status quo. Church historian J. Edwin Orr has said this about revival, But there have been certain seasons called revivals—when God ‘poured His Spirit out on His people.’ These times—also called awakenings—occurred when the presence of God is experienced in powerful manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
²
Dr. Elmer Towns and Dr. Douglas Porter (the authors of the book Ten Greatest Revivals Ever) define revival in this manner:
An evangelical revival is an extraordinary work of God in which Christians repent of their sins as they become intensely aware of His presence in their midst, and they manifest a positive response to God in renewed obedience to the known will of God, resulting in both a deepening of their individual and corporate experience with God, and an increased concern to win others to Christ.³
Revival not only transforms the Church of Jesus Christ, but it dramatically touches the community around that Church. For example, two stories which demonstrate the impact of the Welsh Revival will be shared in this book. The Welsh Revival was a direct influence upon the Azusa Street Revival, which occurred shortly thereafter. Again, quoting from historian J. Edwin Orr, it is noted,
Drunkenness was immediately cut in half, and many taverns went bankrupt. Crime was so diminished that judges were presented with white gloves signifying that there were no cases of murder, assault, rape or robbery or the like to consider. The police became unemployed in many districts. Stoppages occurred in the coal mines, not due to unpleasantness between management and workers, but because so many foul-mouthed miners became converted and stopped using foul language that the horses which hauled the coal trucks in the mines could no longer understand what was being said to them.⁴
Revival—the Holy Spirit’s intervention in life—has happened throughout history. For example, in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon
