Discovering Yoga for Beginners - Caroline Damian

The History and Philosophy of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It is a holistic system that aims to unite the body, mind, and spirit. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to yoke or unite. The philosophy of yoga is based on the concept of union – the union of the individual self with the universal self.

The history of yoga is deeply rooted in Hinduism, but it has also been influenced by Buddhism, Jainism, and other Eastern religions. The earliest references to yoga are found in the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. The practice of yoga was further developed and refined by the ancient sage Patanjali, who compiled the Yoga Sutras, a set of 196 aphorisms that form the foundation of classical yoga philosophy.

Yoga philosophy is based on the concept of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which are:

    1. Yamas: The ethical principles and moral codes of conduct that guide a yogi's behavior towards others.

    2. Niyamas: The personal practices and disciplines that a yogi cultivates to live a balanced and healthy life.

    3. Asana: The physical postures that are practiced in yoga to strengthen and purify the body.

    4. Pranayama: The practice of controlling and regulating the breath, which helps to calm the mind and increase energy levels.

    5. Pratyahara: The withdrawal of the senses from the external world, which helps to quiet the mind and focus inward.

    6. Dharana: The practice of concentration, which helps to still the mind and focus on a single point.

    7. Dhyana: The practice of meditation, which helps to deepen concentration and cultivate awareness.
