The Ashes - Pat Morgan
Ames
Later described by many as the greatest English wicketkeeper-batsman of them all, Les Ames made his first-class debut for Kent in 1926, becoming a regular the following season. He was called up to England duty for the 1928/29 Ashes tour, but featured only in state games; his Test match debut came against South Africa in the summer of 1929. Ames had to wait until the 1932/33 ‘Bodyline’ tour for his first match against Australia, and his first innings of note came when he scored 69 in the second innings at Adelaide. The following summer he knocked 120 off the Aussie attack as England recorded an innings victory at Lord’s. Later in the same series he recorded a 72 at Old Trafford and, meanwhile, his tally of victims caught and stumped was mounting. Ames’ batting average against the Aussies did not approach his overall Test match figure (40.56), but as late as 1938 he was scoring 83 in an Ashes match at Lord’s. That match was to prove his last Ashes hurrah, the intervention of the war bringing an end to his international career. Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1929, he remains the only wicketkeeper to score 100 first-class centuries and still holds the records for most wicketkeeper dismissals (129) and most stumpings (64) in an English county season. His first-class stumpings total (418) is also a
