    INTRODUCTION

    It All Begins Here

Find a balance between head and heart.

    —Colleen Hoover

I created this book out of a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. It is my hope that anyone reading this book will take time to process it, reflect on the details, and learn new tools and strategies to assist in making their life paths their own. I also hope that, in time, the reader will understand this title and begin the process of listening to his or her heart. Therefore, this journey begins. It focuses on what I call the five plus one, which includes our senses of feeling, seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and knowing.

In 2015, a few of my clients began talking to me about writing a book that taught some of the tools they learned during their counseling sessions. They said, If you write a book and teach these tools, you will be helping so many people. One person laughed and said, Suzi, it would be more helpful if you wrote a book with all these tools. This would make our lives easier, and we would not have to write down so many notes in session. Also, maybe it could be helpful for other people. After learning these tools, they often reported gaining additional insight and awareness in identifying feelings and other techniques which helped in their daily lives. Therefore, my goal of creating this book became a reality. I want to express appreciation and gratitude to these people who not only made a difference in my life but, I hope, in yours as well.

I want to thank my wonderful family, my husband, and my two adult children, who light up my days and bring joy and blessing to my life. I want to thank my extended family for being in my life and supporting me along my way and of course, my father in heaven, who guides me daily. To my friends, I say thank you for helping me laugh and smile and for bringing me happiness.

In addition, I want to honor three people whose teachings have provided benefit to my life.

Louise Hay and her book You Can Heal Your Life inspired me to start my own journey of self-reflection when I was an adolescent. Dr. Wayne Dyer, a psychologist, assisted me in my educational growth. His story and books encouraged me to focus on helping others to help themselves. The third person is Lisa Williams, who brought me passion and joy from the first time I saw her. I felt uplifted as I sat on the couch with my seven-year-old son when he practiced for his part as the narrator in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. That day, he emulated Lisa and her talent. Years later, I sat in a conference at Celebrate Your Life and realized this was the same Lisa I saw so many years ago. She was one of the headlining speakers making a difference in my life once more. I believe very strongly that the past, present, and future are interconnected, and if we are focused on the present, all will align. This is where the past, present, and future connect in my life.

I was a sophomore at the University of Arizona and was excited to audition to become an aerobics instructor. I was dressed in my black leotard and favorite pink satin embroidered jacket. I got into my car and began to drive back to my apartment to share the news of becoming an aerobics instructor with my roommates. However, I never arrived home.

I was driving down Speedway Boulevard towards my apartment in Tucson when suddenly I saw a car driving out of control. I remember my body tightening as I saw the car getting closer. Then I heard the shattering of the metal, saw the flashes of the sparks, and felt the spinning of the car. It did not stop there. I saw the car approaching again. This time, the car hit me head-on, and then spun to the other side of the street before hitting a pole. I was coming in and out of consciousness as I heard the sirens approaching. I prayed, Please help me.

I remember hearing outside the car window the emergency medical technicians talking about how to remove me from the car. Coming in and out of consciousness, I heard them talk about removing me with the jaws of life. I felt trapped, frightened, and confused, and then everything went dark.

This was the first of four car accidents I have experienced in my life. That accident filled me with pain and fear of the unknown. Through my years of healing, education, and growth, I have learned and implemented tools and strategies that I hope to teach you throughout this book. These tools are great resources to use and implement in your lives, and I look forward to collaborating with you on your own journey of getting out of your head and into your heart.

This book will include education, stories, thought-provoking ideas, and exercises to complete. Take your time reading this book. Skip ahead, go back, and just be present in each moment as you read, learn, and grow.

Please be aware that all names and stories have been modified or changed unless an individual granted permission. If an individual has shared personal information, I honor and thank that person for being kind, supportive, vulnerable, and allowing others to learn and grow through his or her life experiences.

    Welcome aboard.

Start at the Beginning: Mind and Heart

It is confidence in our bodies, minds, and spirits that

allows us to keep looking for new adventures.

    —Oprah Winfrey

The title of this book may be scary for you. Whether you realize it or not, we live in our heads. We focus on the constant thoughts that may not always be real. This title challenges you to get out of your head and into your heart. One of the ways we do that is through integration. The word integration brings up ideas such as blending, merging, and weaving concepts together. It is important to define the words in the title to assist you in understanding their meanings and their importance, both from an intellectual and a spiritual perspective. In addition, the many quotations and stories in this book will assist in enhancing words, meanings,
