Grief is quite a complex emotional response to the loss of something or someone significant, it is a natural response that allows individuals to come to the terms and reality of loss and is the beginning of a healing journey. While we differently, there are some common manifestations and reactions that many people go through. Some of these include.
Emotional Responses such as Intense sadness, sorrow, despair, anger, frustration, or irritability, Guilt or regret, anxiety, fear, or worry, feeling overwhelmed or emotionally numb, mood swings and unpredictable emotions.
Physical Symptoms such as Fatigue, Sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive sleeping), appetite changes, Physical aches and a weakened immune system.
Cognitive Reactions such as Disbelief/denial of the loss, Confusion, Memory problems, Preoccupation with thoughts of the deceased and questioning one’s belief system etc.
Behavioural changes such as withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, restlessness, agitation, and difficulty making decisions.
Spiritual and faith-based thoughts such as questioning life and one’s spiritual understanding, priorities and value systems.
All these manifestations could vary from one person to another and vary in duration as grief is a deeply individual experience influenced by many factors within one’s surrounding. It is crucial to be patient and understanding to oneself when experiencing grief and to be compassionate to others when supporting them through grief.
