    Introduction

Some 67 opponents have faced Castleford over the years

Between 1926 and 2022 there have been Cas cheers and tears

This book covers each and every one of these

Alphabetically and in poetry if you please

A single side for fewer than ten games

And double this for the more common opposition names

In the following table the columns are three

Number of matches, teams and percent success to see

The pages detail many Cas encounters about which to talk

From Acton & Willesden right through to York

All these opponents are covered in the following pages

Every league match and cup game at all stages

The Super League includes encounters in the play-offs

Incorporated in Cas’ highs and troughs

The Challenge Cup has stood the test of time

Lifting it at Wembley is simply sublime

A total of 81 semi-finals are contained team by team

Where victory is required on the way to a dream

Ultimate success is achieved in a cup final

Castleford have had 39 such occasions in which winning was vital

In all there are 3,566 competitive Castleford matches

    Some 23 Cas silverware catches

Four void and two forfeited games are included

But six abandoned encounters are excluded

Of the former there have been a total of four Cas wins and two losses

And abandoned at the time one level and twice Cas were the bosses

And over the years what are the highlights?

Many Castleford wins during the day and under floodlights

Four times at Wembley Castleford have tasted glory

Huddersfield, Salford, Wigan and Hull KR the story

And in 2017 winning the Super League Leaders Shield

At Cas all the other sides in the division did yield

    Acton & Willesden

Castleford have played Acton & Willesden twice

Within three weeks but it was never thrice

First a 13-9 win at Acton Park Royal

When 12,000 spectators saw each team toil

On 26 October when 1935 was the year

Several months after Cas Challenge Cup glory brought cheer

Castleford played ten of their Wembley-winning team

The visitors led 8-7 at the interval and ended just supreme

Three weeks later the sides met ‘down the Lane’

Again on the Londoners’ parade Cas did rain

This time it was 13-2 at half time and 28-5 was the final score

However, against this opponent Cas matches were no more

Along with Streatham & Mitcham who Cas did not play

No longer in the professional ranks did this outfit stay

At least in the mid-1930s they gave it a go

Against Castleford putting up a reasonable show

In the two encounters Cas’ George Lewis registered a try and kicked seven goals

To warm all Castleford rugby souls

Jim Croston touched down for a brace in the first game

And in the second also on the try sheet was his name

In addition, Billy Davies went in for a three-pointer on each occasion

For this he deserves a heartfelt ovation

So in the single division four points Castleford gained

A more comfortable win at Wheldon Road before 5,000 fans they obtained

    Astley & Tyldesley Collieries

Against Astley & Tyldesley Collieries Castleford played only one match

On the way to the clubs first silverware cup catch

On 9 February 1935 at the last 32 stage

The beginning of a historic Challenge Cup page

The amateurs gave up ground advantage to play at Wheldon Road

Some 6,400 spectators attended in the cold

The visitors’ hopes from the outset were rather thin

And Cas scored nine tries in the hosts’ 33-4 win

Four of these were recorded before the break

When at 16-4 Cas’ inexperienced opponents still had a stake

Jim Croston and Les Adams each touched down for a brace

To ensure that in the next round Cas had a place

Billy Davies scored a try as well as dropping a goal

In the side at stand-off he had an important role

Cas tries also came from wingers Bernard Cunniffe and Tommy Askin

To make sure there would be an easy win

A couple of forwards also got in on the act

Tries to Jim Crossley and Ted Saddler was a fact

George Lewis slipped over a couple of goals to boot

Not knowing at the time that within three months he would win Wembley fruit

Even so, in returning to west of the Pennines

The amateurs could be proud that they had not fluffed their lines

Castleford have not met this opposition for a second time

So we move on having reached the end of this rhyme

    Australia

Castleford have played the Australian tourists back in the day

Eight times in all and on occasions with good play

However, Cas will want to forget the teams’ first meeting

On 9 October 1929 when the Aussies gave them a ‘right old’ greeting

A 2-53 score for Cas was like the economic depression of the time

But for Australia it could be described as simply sublime

At least Arthur Atkinson kicked a first-half penalty goal

To warm the heart of every Castleford soul

Four years later it was a little better but Cas still lost

This time in 1933 on 27 September 6-39 was the cost

On 6 October 1948 Australia returned to Wheldon Road
