    Working In Various Healthcare Environments

    This chapter will introduce the numerous work settings that a nursing assistant can anticipate. Understanding the healthcare environment may help you better grasp the tasks and commitments that might be asked of you.

    Working in Various Healthcare Environments

    Working in a healthcare environment can be done in a variety of places with a wide range of purposes. You might work in one of these environments for the National Health Service (NHS), a non-profit organisation, or the healthcare industry. These might include any of the following:

    -  General Hospitals

    -  GP Surgeries

    -  Dental Clinics

    -  Specialised and General Care Homes

    -  Scientific based laboratory

    -  Homes of patients requiring care

    -   

    Working in Acute Care Environments (Hospitals)

    Acute care facilities are typically used to deliver healthcare that includes frequent and/or urgent interventions to enhance or lengthen life. Acute care, as opposed to chronic or long-term care, refers to quick and frequent immediate actions to save lives and enhance health. In hospitals, acute care is typically offered in one of the following divisions or areas:

    -  Accident and emergency (A+E)

    -  Surgery Intensive Units (Acute Surgical wards)

    -  NICUs and paediatric intensive care units (PICUs)

    -  The Trauma Bays or Resuscitation Area at A+E

    The following functions are performed by these acute care facilities:

    A+E: Patients with minor or serious health issues will sporadically present to this department. These issues are fixed as soon as feasible, depending on the level of care necessary.

    Surgery Intensive Units (Acute Surgical Wards):  These wards provide care before, during, and after surgery for patients who need it.

    NICU/PICU: PICU: focuses on giving youngsters intense care, frequently up to the age of 16. Infants, many of whom are born prematurely or with underlying medical conditions, are the focus of the NICU's care (congenital)

    Trauma Bay: The treatment of traumatic injuries from auto accidents or other emergencies is the focus of trauma bays and resuscitation sections. For a patient to survive and receive the care they require, they must be frequently incubated (ventilated).

    Patients with psychological issues are managed, cared for, and treated in these units and locations. In other words, mental disorders need to be treated immediately or continuously.

    CCU/ICU: The continual, crucial care that patients get at these hospitals is expertly delivered in an effort to extend life and enhance health. Patients are
