A scientist back to earth.
THE PATH
‘There is no way I’m going up that hill. Maybe Rosie can go instead, El giggled evilly.’
Rosie had expected this, so it didn’t surprise her at all. She was used to being teased and made fun of, by the girls, but as they were the only friends she had, she put up with it.
Copying her sister, Mari laughed and said in a creepy voice. ‘Rosie, I bet you are too afraid to go up the hill on your own, aren’t you? I bet you think the wizard will grab you and boil you up in his pot.
Oh, and perhaps he is on his way now?’
El joined in, saying she was a scaredy cat who ran away from danger, and it was plain to see that both sisters were daring her.
Both girls knew she would do the dare just to prove she was not afraid, like the time they dared her to scrump apples off the farmer’s tree.
The farmer yelled at her to get out of his yard at once. The poor man was so angry that his whole face was as red as a beetroot.
Rosie felt guilty that she was making him so angry, so she scrambled over the wall and out of his orchard, saying sorry as she left.
Now the girls wanted her to go up a hill, where weird stuff happened.
Sometimes there were horrible noises and flashing lights coming from the top, which frightened everybody.
Even the police wouldn’t go near the place. Their excuse was that no one had committed a crime, and nobody had disappeared.
The children in the neighbourhood, assumed a wizard lived there and wouldn’t go up the path not even for a dare.
Most of their parents laughed when they came back with stories about the hill, but they never asked why.
Rosie wondered if there was a wizard living there or just a scientist playing with his inventions.
She had agreed to come on the trip half expecting the others to come with her, but it was not to be, and she smiled at their false bravado.
‘Ok, I’ll go up, are you girls coming too?’
She knew they were taunting her because they were too afraid to go themselves.
‘Err, no, sorry we have to get home, as our dad will be back soon and you know how angry he gets if we are out too long, El said.
Rosie, we will know if you disappear or if something nasty gets you, as you won’t return.’
With that last dig, they both giggled and ran away.
Rosie felt relieved, as she didn’t want a couple of scaredy cats jumping at every sound or movement. She understood that even grown-ups have scary stories to tell, and she smiled when she remembered her father’s story.
Her father had the habit of coming home late at night after going to the hotel for a drink. Once there, he sang songs and played his harmonica. People crowded around him, and as he was handsome as well, the pretty women made a fuss of him, and as he loved the attention, he sang there every week.
One night he told of a scary experience on the way home. He was walking beside a cement pipeline that ran beside the path, when something white ran towards him. It frightened him so much he couldn’t move a muscle. His mouth went dry, and he thought he would wet himself in fear.
Suddenly, he heard a bark, and realised the white ghost was the family dog running along the pipe, and as the pipe was off the ground it looked as if it were flying towards him.
Rosie smiled at the memory, as she knew Winker loved to greet her when she came home from school, so doing so at night was nothing special for him.
She watched the girls as they went down the hill, even though they kept turning around to make stupid faces at her. Rosie smiled and waved at them pretending she was not frightened, but inside she shivered in fear.
Well, if she was going to do this, it had to be now, so shrugging off her fear, she walked up the twisted path.
The path zigzagged around trees, which had large golden bells hanging on them. Puzzled, she reached up and touched one with the tip of her finger, but even before she pulled her hand away, every bell on every tree made one loud dong, and stopped.
Rosie shivered in fear. What had she summoned? She hoped it wasn’t a monster or a crazy dog that might tear her to bits.
Thinking it had been silly to ring the bells, she tried to leave, but as she turned around, she realised the path she had been walking on had disappeared and a wall of brambles stood in its place.
The brambles were huge and blocked her only escape.
In despair, she sat under a tree thinking. She was extremely afraid. Maybe it would be better to go back down, even if the brambles cut her to bits. Plus, the ringing bells might have invited something horrible.
A faint breeze whirled around the top of the trees, which sounded like soft voices singing a lullaby. It was so soothing that after a while, she felt brave enough to venture up the hill.
To begin with, the path looked well used, but now the trees were darker and larger, and the soft singing disappeared. A few branches were leaning so close they touched her arms as though they had hands, and her imagination went wild.
When something touched her cheek she jumped in alarm. What if there were goblins just waiting to attack her, but she sighed in relief when she realised it was just a leaf.
Soon the path had changed from a happy place to a sombre, menacing tunnel of trees, and Rosie wanted to get out of there fast.
It was just at that moment the forest ended, as she had arrived at a patch of land with no bushes or trees. Hearing a noise behind her, she looked back at the forest, but no monsters ran out to attack her. Still, she shivered, and walked into the clearing.
Then to her amazement she realised the land was no longer empty, as there was a strange house standing in front of her. This alarmed her as it had appeared out of thin air and wasn’t there when she came out of the forest.
It was an odd-looking house, as the windows on either side of the front door looked like eyes, and the letterbox had a smiling mouth, which turned up at the corners.
Fascinated, she climbed up the old wooden steps leading to
