The Self-Reliant Princess - Joseph Wycoff

    An Introduction to Our Princess

This is the story of a princess who was like other princesses in many ways: she lived in a castle with a queen for a mother and a king for a father. She had many beautiful dresses, a closet full of them as a matter of fact; dresses that she had made herself – purple, blue, yellow, red, and black. She never knew what color she might be in the mood for each morning. She was generally a very decisive girl, as you will soon see, but she never could decide on a favorite color. She also had closets full of hoodies and jeans and hats, and one special closet full of shoes, for running and dancing and climbing and riding and whatnot. She did like options.

She could sing and dance and run. She could also climb and read and throw. She was fascinated by the stars over her head and the rocks under her feet. She wanted to know how to make things, like banana bread and solar panels. She also liked mysteries, solvable and unsolvable. She was, in short, a Brave and Curious Girl.

The Princess and the Big Dig

One day, the Self-Reliant Princess awoke with a plan. She was going to go hunting for dinosaurs. In the canyons just to the east of the kingdom, she knew that there were some rocky, sandy places that were just right for finding dinosaur bones. And so she popped out of bed, brushed her teeth and hair, packed her tools and her lunch, and off she went. She stopped in at the kingdom next door and called up to the window of her good friend, Princess Alex.

A tiny, bespectacled face peeped from the tower window, the corners of a smile just barely visible over the window frame. A lovely pink pointy hat sat perfectly perched on her brown curls, and she waved when she saw the Self-Reliant Princess.

I’m going hunting for fossils. Wanna come?

The tiny face shrunk down slightly below the window frame.

Aw, c’mon. It’ll be fun! Just a quick ride out to the desert. I really could use the help….

Now Princess Alex was not generally as adventurous as the Self-Reliant Princess. In fact, she usually preferred the comfort of her castle to adventures abroad. But she was a thoroughly fearless friend; and when a friend needed her, she was perfectly capable of being more loyal than afraid. She gave two quick nods of her head, disappeared inside the tower, and shortly there were two princesses on their way to the local desert, the smaller riding side-saddle on a beautiful white pony, and the taller on a brown mare, chatting merrily as they rode.

In the distance, a lovely great hole appeared; this was the Lost Canyon – which made no sense because, well, it was right here. Everybody knew that it was right here. And how do you lose a canyon? Maybe someone forgot where it was? Maybe someone lost something in it? Maybe it was discovered by Colonel Lewis Ignatius Lost? In any case, they found it easily. When they reached the bottom of the canyon, they
