James Goll’s The Triumph is one of the most captivating and illuminating books I’ve read on the topic of spiritual warfare, and because of how it shows us to overcome, I believe it is destined to be a major landmark in Christendom.

James is a personal friend who I trust and admire, a true general in the Kingdom who has experienced spiritual warfare firsthand, facing battles on many fronts, often under perplexing circumstances; he has never given in or given up. He understands and epitomizes the truth that war is not the end but the means to a life of victory through Christ Jesus our Lord.

The approach James has taken in this book is brilliant and will appeal to believers of all ages and levels of understanding. Every book is always a team effort. The older I get, the more aware I am of this reality. I am a very limited man. God gives grace to the weak, and some of that grace is manifested in and through other people God has put around me. This book has taken years to compose. It started out as a detailed class called War in the Heavenlies, which I taught after we first moved from Kansas City to Nashville. Yes, that became one of many study guides with a red cover and black ink accompanied by about twenty scratchy audio cassette tape messages.

So where do I begin to give acknowledgements? Let’s start with the many different board and staff members of Ministry to the Nations, which emerged into God Encounters Ministries. I want to give a special thank you to Jeffrey Thompson, who has served this ministry for twenty years. He has served every area of this ministry with excellence. Thank you for holding up my hands. Several years later, I began to teach online classes in partnership with Empower 2000 and their many different team members. Thank you for your partnership!

Introduction

YOU WERE BORN FOR BATTLE

You were born into a war—no matter where or when you were born—and you were born to claim victory in that war. You don’t even have to volunteer to participate in this ongoing battle. Just by being born you are caught right in the middle of it!

This fact doesn’t sound like great news at first, but the more you learn about the war, the better the news gets. You have been given the privilege of choosing which side to fight for; and when you choose to follow Jesus, you are automatically on the winning side!

How can I be so sure of that outcome? Because of Jesus’ marvelous victory at Calvary. When our lovely Messiah hung on the cross, cursed for the sins of the world, He uttered the words, It is finished! These are three of the greatest words ever expressed, which have echoed gloriously throughout history. It is finished! The work of the cross of Christ was, is, and will continue to be perfectly complete!

And now, as followers of Jesus, we are called to enforce the triumph of Christ upon the powers of darkness. Not only have we been set free from the penalty of sin, sickness, and eternal death, but we also get to be used by the Holy Spirit as a part of God’s end-time army to set other captives free. Now that is great news!

But to be real with you, there is some boot-camp training necessary if you are going to be a victorious warrior in God’s army. Why? Because when you go into battle with the enemy, he strikes back. As you probably know from your spiritual journey thus far, it is helpful to have a guide to assist you as you head into unfamiliar and dangerous territory.

This book is full of excellent teachings extracted from our ultimate guide—God’s Word, the Bible—and is divided into three sections: The Great Battle, Our Spiritual Weapons, and Enforcing Christ’s Victory. I have purposefully divided each section into smaller chapters so that each chapter can focus on one primary topic, encouraging you to take away one key learning and then apply it to your life. It is those who hear the Word and put it into practice that are able to withstand the great rains, floods, and winds that beat against our houses (see Matthew 7:24–27).

While I’m excited to present to you this comprehensive guide to spiritual warfare, I’m even more excited for you to use these tools to enforce Christ’s victory in your everyday life. My prayer is that you will be so heavily armed with the Word of God that when the enemy marches toward you, you can stand firm and strong, resisting every evil attack. May the warrior’s mantle come upon you, and may you be filled with this revelation: Greater is He who is in and with you, than he who is in the world (see 1 John 4:4).

May grace be poured out upon you as you march into training camp and then demonstrate the victory of Christ for the glory of our Captain, Commander, and King—Christ Jesus the Lord!

Warring Kingdoms

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

Let’s get real. Some of us have been knocked around pretty hard during our journeys in following Jesus. I sure have! But ultimately, we are all overcomers in Him. In this first section we will look at the great battle every person on earth is born into.

Unfortunately, many of us have been taught and sometimes act like there is no spiritual struggle at all. We take the first part of Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) and stop after For we wrestle not. We are ignorant of Satan’s schemes and believe there is no battle at all, or we enter the battle passively because we believe that Jesus has already triumphed—and if Jesus has done it all, then why do we need to do anything more?

Yes, we enter into the completed work that Jesus has already accomplished. But look at what Paul the apostle actually wrote: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood (NKJV). So guess what? Your spouse is not your enemy. Your boss is not your enemy. And the leader of your country is not your enemy either.

The enemy is the devil (also called Satan, Lucifer, and other names that we’ll explore in chapter 3), his demonic forces, and other manipulative spirits of darkness. We do not wrestle with or against flesh and blood in spiritual warfare.

The Great Battle Between Two Kingdoms

As there is the Kingdom of God, there is also the kingdom of Satan. Let me state clearly from the beginning that Satan is not a king. Satan is a prince who masquerades as a king with a domain or kingdom that opposes the one and only true King. These two kingdoms—one true Kingdom and one false kingdom—are in direct conflict with one another.

I personally witnessed this ongoing stark conflict when I led a ministry team from the United States to the island nation of Haiti in the Caribbean. This now poverty-stricken land was once so prosperous and a gem of natural beauty that it was called the Pearl of the Antilles. But through a pact overtly made with the devil, it had become one of the most enslaved and oppressed countries in the world and the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.

Evangelist Mahesh Chavda, a dear friend, was preaching the evening meetings with signs and wonders following as I led our team in round-the-clock prayer and fasting. Our meetings were gaining momentum, both attendance and in shifting the spiritual atmosphere over the dark land. As a result, we heard that a voodoo priest announced over the country’s national radio, "All the witch doctors across the nation must gather together at our known place and time
