A Note from Pastor Sam
Knowing you have power is not the same as accessing that power.
You can know that an automotive engine is powerful enough to transport you to a destination miles away, but unless you fuel that engine, ignite it, and harness its power into motion, you will not go anywhere. You can know your phone has the capacity for transmitting signals to cellular towers and satellites in order to communicate with others on their phones. But unless your phone is charged, in range of a tower or satellite, and you activate someone else’s number, your call will not be completed. Similarly, knowing you have the power of the Holy Spirit is not the same as accessing God’s power in your life.
As followers of Jesus, we are usually aware we have the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling inside us. We know our sins are forgiven as we experience new life through Jesus Christ. We believe there is nothing and no one more powerful than God.
And yet we often struggle to access the unlimited power of God’s Spirit within us.
To experience the life of abundance Jesus said He came to bring.
To live in the fulfillment of the peace, purpose, and power God provides.
To be a conduit of healing power, transforming love, and unfathomable grace.
Right now, if you have been born again, then you have more power than you can possibly imagine! But you may not be relying on that power to overcome your past, empower your present, and envision your future. You may know about the Holy Spirit but not know Him personally or intimately. You may believe in God and want to grow in your relationship with Him but continue to rely on your own abilities. You may know there has to be more to the Christian life but struggle to experience the vibrant spiritual life you witness in others.
These situations are why I wrote Fresh Oil, Holy Fire, New Wine. As more and more people described feeling stuck in their faith, as I encountered numerous believers barely acquainted with God’s Spirit in their lives, I felt convicted to help them. I wanted for them to not only understand who the Holy Spirit is but also to experience the vibrant, abundant life God has for us. Turning to God’s Word for divine inspiration, I was struck by Paul’s thesis in his letter to the Romans. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you
(Romans 8:11 NLT).
Paul wrote this to help believers understand the gift we’ve been given when we accept God’s grace and experience salvation through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Paul wanted to make sure we realize that the gift of the Holy Spirit within us changes everything. We no longer have to try harder—we simply have to access the spiritual power within us. We are no longer limited by our human abilities and earthly capabilities—we can unleash the limitless resurrection power in our lives.
This study guide can assist you in this holy pursuit. As a complementary companion to your reading of Fresh Oil, Holy Fire, New Wine, this guide can help you engage with my vital message and apply it personally in your life. Whether you’re struggling in your faith or simply longing to grow closer to God’s Spirit within you, my prayer is that you come to know, embrace, and enjoy the fullness of living in the power of the Holy Spirit—every moment of every day. Because you, my friend, have the same living Spirit of God that raised Jesus inside you right now! The same unique, empowering, emancipating, elevating Spirit that resurrected Christ resides within you.
If you long for more, then it’s time to be filled—with fresh oil, holy fire, and new wine!
It’s time to access the power of the same Spirit in you!
Getting Started
As you’ll discover throughout this study, your relationship with the Holy Spirit is personal and dynamic. With the relational nature of God’s Spirit in mind, this study is designed to help you apply what you’re learning so that you can draw closer to God and experience more of the Spirit’s power in your life. Whether you’re completing this study in community with a group or individually as a more personal way to grow in your faith, you’re likely to benefit most by engaging the content with an open mind and a tender heart.
Each session contains two major sections. The first explores the prominent themes and biblical truths found in corresponding chapters of Fresh Oil, Holy Fire, New Wine and works well for both group and individual study. The second, Going Deeper,
takes you further into the material, offering more opportunities for individual reflection and personal application. If you’re in a group, this second section provides a great way to continue processing what you’re learning in between your group meetings.
Both sections include passages and verses from the Bible, all from the New International Version (NIV) unless noted otherwise, provided in the text. Both sections also contain a variety of questions to help you explore the material. Don’t feel as though you’re obligated to use them all. Groups can focus on the questions and exercises that resonate with participants most. Individuals completing this study can ask God’s Spirit to guide them to truths especially relevant to where they are in their spiritual journey and season of life.
Whether completing this study in a group or individually, please keep in mind that none of the components are intended to burden you with homework or leave you feeling stressed to do more. Instead, remain open to the ways this study can enhance your understanding of Fresh Oil, Holy Fire, New Wine and draw you closer in your relationship with Christ. You’re encouraged to respond in the spaces provided throughout these pages. While you don’t have to write down your responses, you might be surprised to discover how jotting them down helps focus your thoughts.
Finally, remember that all this is an opportunity to explore new ways of considering what it means to relate to the Holy Spirit and rely on His power in all areas of your life. Ultimately, this study is intended to stimulate your mind and ignite your heart so that you’re inspired to grow closer to God’s Spirit within you, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. Are you ready to deepen your faith, experience limitless power, and produce spiritual fruit? Then let’s get started exploring what it means to be filled with fresh oil, holy fire, and new wine!
