THE BEST TYPE 2 DIABETES KILLER - Claire Marie Algarme
CHAPTER I
Diabetes Today
Diabetes may be regarded as a silent disease
in that many people ignore its warning signs.
However, it consistently registers in the top ten causes of death in the United States.¹ In 2021, 103,294 U.S. deaths were directly attributed to diabetes.²
Yet according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 81 percent of the 98 million Americans with prediabetes are unaware of their condition. This puts them in jeopardy of developing premature cardiovascular disease, as well as the risk of stroke and other serious complications associated with type 2 diabetes.³
This story extends beyond national borders, as diabetes was responsible for 1.5 million deaths worldwide in 2021. Of those fatalities, nearly half – 48 percent – affected individuals under the age of 70.⁴
These statistics underscore the need for comprehensive interventions to address diabetes-related mortality on both the domestic and global scale.
Efforts to raise awareness, promote preventative measures, and enhance health care infrastructure become imperative in mitigating the devastating impact of diabetes and fostering a healthier future for individuals across diverse communities who are affected by this widespread chronic condition.
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by the body's improper utilization of insulin, may initially seem intimidating and even hopeless. But the reality is that it is a treatable condition. Unlike some diseases without a definitive cure, diabetes can be effectively managed, and in certain cases its progression can even be reversed through a multifaceted approach that combines lifestyle modifications, medication, and close medical supervision.
Bonny’s story, and those of others he has encountered over the years, serve as evidence that positive outcomes can be achieved through proactive intervention and holistic health measures.
Several factors contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, with physical inactivity, obesity, and excessive body weight standing out as prominent culprits. These lifestyle-related elements create an environment conducive to the development of insulin resistance, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.
While there is a genetic component to the predisposition for this condition, the profound impact of lifestyle choices on diabetes risk cannot be overstated. The intricate interplay between genetic factors and lifestyle underscores the significance of adopting healthy habits to mitigate the risk and severity of type 2 diabetes. Promoting physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and making informed dietary choices are pivotal components of preventive strategies.
Addressing the root causes of type 2 diabetes necessitates a comprehensive and personalized approach. By empowering individuals with knowledge about the modifiable risk factors associated with this condition, the healthcare community can foster a proactive and resilient approach to diabetes management, thereby improving overall health outcomes.
As of 2019, diabetes affected 37.3 million Americans, constituting 11.3 percent of the U.S. population.⁵ The 2023 data reveals that around 38 million Americans, roughly 1 in 10, are living with diabetes, with 90-95 percent of them diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. While this type typically emerges
