About this ebook

Bhutan is a beautiful place, full of majestic mountains and rambling rivers. Its culture is rich and authentic, and the people are some of the happiest in the world.

And yet…

There are shadows here. And strange noises. And hidden dangers. Bhutan can be a scary place, too. If you're not careful, you may find yourself at the mercy of a hungry yeti or a ghost in disguise.

Scary Stories from Bhutan is written entirely by the students at Jakar Higher Secondary School. Their writing is full of twists and turns, of dark moments and lurking dangers.

The stories are fiction. They're completely made up.

Or are they?

    Dear Readers,

Bhutan is a truly beautiful place. Snow-frosted peaks rise above rolling valleys. Churning rivers snake lazy paths between green hills. Thick forests hide special plants and animals that are found nowhere else on Earth. People come from all over the world to enjoy this hidden kingdom.

    And yet...

Bhutan is a scary place. At night, those creatures come out in droves, and the strange noises begin. Locals tell stories about ancient demons and cursed places. Behind every shadow is a new mystery.

This is the scary side of Bhutan.

In the pages of this book, you’ll find fifty stories that address the dark side head-on. Each story is written by a student at Jakar High School. Some are spookier than others. Some are funnier. But they all dwell in the shadowy regions of this beautiful country.

When I collected stories for our first book (We Are Bhutan, now available wherever books are sold), I was surprised that so many students were interested in horror fiction. It seemed like a strange fit for people who live in such a peaceful and picturesque place.

Eventually, I realized that at least a third of the students’ stories were horror-related. There were simply too many of them to include in the first book, so I cut them all.

Flash forward half a year later. The students and I have been selling We Are Bhutan at shops, festivals, and schools. It’s been more popular than I ever expected. At the last festival, our student writers sold copies to visitors from eighteen countries across six continents. (No one from Antarctica is interested, apparently.)

Now, with the profits from the first book, we’re ready to publish and sell Volume Two. It didn’t take me long to realize that I’d devote this entire book to the spooky stories that I’d previously cut. After all, my students were interested in the genre. Why not?

So we have Scary Stories from Bhutan. I hope you like it. I hope it gives you the chills. My students spent a lot of time and effort dreaming up some very cool ideas. You can read their stories in order, or skip around from section to section. It’s up to you.

For our last book, we had a Himalayan black bear as our guide. This time, we have a black-necked crane. (You probably see him screaming on the next page.) He’s our Master of Ceremonies for the night. Try not to scare him too much, though, or he’ll fly away.

Before I leave you, I’d like to assure you that Bhutan itself isn’t really a scary place. I’ve lived here two years, and I still haven’t met any yetis or ghosts. None of these spooky things are really out there, but it sure is fun to imagine them.

Now, sit back and enjoy Scary Stories from Bhutan. Try not to scream.

    Good luck!

    FINAL WARNINGS

    YETIS!

Out of all the mythical creatures to come out of the Himalayas, perhaps none is as famous or as terrifying as the yeti. By most accounts, the yeti is a tall, furry creature that lives in the remotest mountain tops and forests of Bhutan. They mostly stay away from humans, unless some unlucky explorer wanders into their territory.

Many locals say they’ve seen a yeti, but so far, there’s no proof that any really exist. Think of the yeti as Bigfoot’s more reclusive, Asian cousin.

People say that if you actually see one, you have to run away as fast as possible. Maybe you’ll escape. Most likely, though, you’ll be food.

But it’s just a legend, right? Yetis aren’t real.

Just tell yourself that the next time you find yourself alone in the mountains.

    The Jungle Man

The rain was pouring hard, pelting Yangzom’s clothes and splashing her face. In the midst of dark woods, she was fighting her way through the bushes and trees. It was dark and hard to see. She was surrounded by strange shadows, but she stayed strong.

Yangzom, don’t go alone, her mother had warned her as she set out in the morning to pick mushrooms. You’ll get lost.

She should’ve listened to her mother.

Yangzom lived in a small village named Zhicha, which was one of the remotest places in Bhutan. Her family was very poor, and Yangzom had to work hard in order to support her old mother. That was why Yangzom found herself up in the mountains. She was looking for the rarest, most expensive mushrooms in the world. Just a handful of those would rescue her family from poverty.

She had indeed found some, too. She followed them up the highest peak, farther than she even realized. And now, she was lost. The sun set, and the night wind was chilling.

Squinting through the dark, Yangzom reached a cave. Great, she whispered to herself. She could wait in there until morning.

The cave was dark, but she felt much warmer and safer. She managed to gather some dried wood and leaves for a fire. Outside, thunder cracked and its booming noise echoed through the cave. She lit a fire and stared at its dancing shapes. Oh, how she regretted her decision to come so far. Her mother must be so worried.

    THUMP.

She looked up. What was that? She thought it might be another lost villager. She jumped to her feet and ran to the opening of the cave. She didn’t see anyone.

    THUMP.

The noise came back, but this time, it grew nearer and nearer. Yangzom began to smell something stinky and strange.

    THUMP.

Something was coming. Whatever it was, she was certain that it wasn’t a human. Nowhere else to go, she quickly ran deeper into the cave and hid herself behind a stalagmite.

The sound became clearer and louder. After a while, she saw a huge figure standing at the entrance of the cave. As lightning flashed, she saw that the creature had the same features as that of a human, but was much taller and hairier. It was staring at Yangzom with its bulging eyes.

Horrorstruck, Yangzom didn’t know what to do. Yeti, she whispered. The jungle man would rip apart everything that came in its way, especially if it was a human. Right then, Yangzom saw that the creature was staring at the fire, lit beside her. It seemed to be afraid of the fire.

    Bang. Bang. Bang.

The creature began to hit its hand on the walls of the cave. The creature wanted to attack Yangzom, but it was too afraid of the fire. It couldn’t get close.

    Yangzom held her breath.

The yeti jumped and howled. It banged its giant fists into the hard rock.

Meanwhile, Yangzom began to collect more things to keep the fire burning. As the fire burned bigger and brighter, the creature gave one mighty roar and disappeared back into the night. Yangzom took a deep sigh of relief. She leaned back, closed her eyes, and fell asleep.

    THUMP.

She woke up to the same loud sound as before. Oh no, she thought. The yeti is back.

    THUMP. Footsteps.

Not again, Yangzom whispered. Oh God. If I am to die today, please send someone to look after my mother. That is all I want. It was a silent prayer that filled her entire heart.

As the sound became clearer and louder, she knew that her life was coming
