    About the Authors

    EARTHRISE

The astronauts of Apollo 8 (1968) were the first humans to leave Earth’s orbit. They circled the moon to scout out places where future missions could land. On Christmas Eve, as the spacecraft flew around the dark side of the moon, astronaut Bill Anders took one of the most important photographs of all time—earthrise. No human, either in space or on Earth, had ever seen the whole planet like this before, floating like a ball in space—and it changed our view of the planet forever. It’s ironic, Anders remarked later. We came to discover the moon and we actually discovered Earth.

    FOREWORD

    THE OVERVIEW EFFECT

by Scott Kelly, Retired NASA Astronaut

The first time I saw Earth from space, I knew I would never see anything as beautiful. That was in 1999, on my first spaceflight to the Hubble Space Telescope. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to fly in space three more times. On my most recent mission, I spent an entire year in the International Space Station!

From space, Earth looks like a peaceful place, without political borders. From orbit, astronauts get the sense that this is how Earth was meant to be viewed. This vantage point gives you a sense of oneness, an awareness that we are all part of the same humanity. Many people call this the Overview Effect, which is where this book gets its name. When astronauts experience the Overview Effect, we feel a greater connection to Earth, its people, and the environment that changes us forever.

Exploring the satellite photos in Overview allows you to experience some of the beauty and the surprises our planet reveals from above. I hope these spectacular views give you the same sense of connection to Earth that I felt when I was in space.

    INTRODUCTION

    ALWAYS BE EXPLORING

When I was ten years old, my favorite thing to study in school was maps. I am so thankful for my teachers and my parents, who encouraged me to study geography—and all kinds of other topics that fascinated me—with so much passion and joy. Thankfully my parents have never stopped doing this. They helped me understand how important it is to always be exploring.

So it probably won’t surprise you that I started a space club at my first office job—where people would come together to discuss the importance of outer space. The idea that sparked Daily Overview, its Instagram page, and this book
