There is always a great atmosphere in the winding medieval streets of Stege. Use your time to visit museums, swim, shop and of course an excursion to the Cliffs of Mon.

You'll be pushed to find another city in Denmark which is as small, but at the same time so rich in atmosphere and history as that of Stege. See the well-preserved medieval gate, find bargains at the cheerful Tuesday market, and soak up the sun on one of the island's beaches. Most important of all is of course the fantastic natural phenomenon Mons Klint (Cliffs of Mon), located a mere 20-minute drive from Stege.

Start your sightseeing by walking through the maze-like streets of Stege and past Molleporten, a gate that dates back to the Middle Ages when Stege was thriving due to the fishing of herring. Continue to the Mons Museum, where you can learn a lot about the island's history. If you are on holiday in Stege in the summer, you should also pay a visit to the amazing Tuesday Market, where Stege almost overflows with entertainment, good music and stalls selling handicrafts, fragrant dishes and other goodies.

Even if you are just on a weekend break in Stege, make sure you don’t leave without visiting Mons Klint. Mons Klint are chalk-white limestone cliffs, which rise 128 metres above the sea and can be experienced both from below and from above. Make sure you take along your camera, as the cliffs are an amazing sight. You should also pop in to the GeoCenter Mons Klint at top of the cliffs. The centre tells you about the area's natural history through interactive exhibits this place is packed with fun workshops and educational excursions in the school holidays.

If you want to experience more nature and history, then combine the two with a leisurely bike ride along the cycle trail Munkevejen. You’ll pass several historical churches, where you can find some of Denmark's most beautiful frescoes by the famous Elmelunde Master.

To go here by car is by far the most practical solution, but it is also possible to travel to Stege using public transport. Take bus 660R from Vordingborg to Stege, and bus 678 to Mons Klint. Stege is located 77 miles south-south-west of Copenhagen Airport. Vordingborg is situated on the main line between Copenhagen and Hamburg in Germany, with frequent departures.

While you are on holiday in Stege, don’t forget to relax on the many Blue Flag-awarded beaches of the island. You won’t be able to resist an invigorating swim in the sea, and an ice cream is rarely too far away.
