Honor Heights Park is considered by many to be the centerpiece of the town of Muskogee. Come to this picturesque green space to stroll the scenic trails, enjoy an al fresco meal at one of the picnic areas or go fishing in the park’s several lakes and ponds. Tennis courts, playgrounds and a butterfly house offer even more to keep you entertained. Time your visit to coincide with one of the many seasonal events held in the park in order to see it at its finest.
Visit today and you will find the park modern and well cared for, but it is actually an important historic site, dating back to 1909. Within its 132 acres (53 hectares), the park offers a good variety of scenery.
Explore the park’s walking trails. Bring your binoculars when you set out on the Audubon Trail, which is known as an excellent place to glimpse a wide range of bird species. Local wildlife can also be spotted along the Henry Bresser Nature Trail, while the Stem Beach Trail is a popular place to go running.
The park features several photo-worthy beauty spots. Beautiful plants, trees and flowers abound in special areas such as the Conrad Rose Garden, the Art Johnson Memorial Dogwood Collection, the C. Clay Harrell Arboretum and the Elbert L. Little Jr. Native Tree Collection. See even more color on display in the wonderful Papilion, a butterfly house that is open from spring through fall each year. Step inside and be surrounded by the flutter of elegant wings.
Honor Heights Park serves as a community hub hosting many events throughout the year. Come in April to witness the impressive sight of one of Muskogee’s biggest annual events, the Azalea Festival. As its name suggests, this festival sees the park filled with gorgeous flowers in full bloom. Alternatively, come in the festive year-end season and find the park awash with light, music and family fun during the Garden of Lights festival.
