Prince Harry's Uncle Earl Spencer has given his verdict on his nephew's "monumental victory" of his court case, as described by Harry's legal team.

Earl Spencer - who is also Princess Diana’s brother - responded to his nephew’s settled unlawful information gathering lawsuit against News Group Newspapers (NGN) and posted on X.

He said: "It takes an enormous amount of guts to take on opponents like News Group Newspapers, and great tenacity to win.

"And it’s just wonderful that Harry fought for - and gained - an apology to his mother. She would be incredibly touched at that, & rightly proud."

Prince Harry today settled his legal action against News Group Newspapers (NGN), with the publisher of The Sun offering an apology to the duke over allegations of unlawful information-gathering.

The Duke of Sussex alleged he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for NGN, which also published the now-defunct News Of The World.

Harry's trial was set to last up to 10 weeks but on Wednesday morning, his barrister David Sherborne said that the parties had "reached an agreement" and that NGN had offered an apology to the duke and would pay "substantial damages".

The publisher offered its "full and unequivocal apology" to the duke for the "serious intrusion" by The Sun between 1996 and 2011 and for the "phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information" by journalists and private investigators instructed by them at the News Of The World.

NGN also apologised to Lord Tom Watson, former Labour deputy leader, was also taking legal action against the publisher, but also settled his claim.

In a response read outside the High Court in London on his behalf, the duke hailed it as a "monumental victory".

However, the Duke of Sussex had previously vowed not to settle the claim, saying he was pursuing "truth and accountability" and that he was "the last person that can actually achieve that" after hundreds of others settled their cases against NGN.

Chris Ship, Royal Editor at ITV News wrote on X: "Just been told News Group Newspapers have paid Prince Harry and EIGHT figure sum in damages." He later added: "The damages awarded by NGN to Prince Harry are between £10 and £20 million, according to a well-placed source."
