24 students of Jai Narayan College have been selected to encourage other students, teachers and their families to recycle after an agreement was signed between Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Swire Shipping and the school.

The Recycling on the Go program, which is Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd’s initiative in partnership with Swire Shipping and Jai Narayan College, is a 1-year long recycling program.

Senior Prefect, Hefuhelava Kamaile says the aim of the programme is to be able to learn more about the environment, how to save it and influence the younger generation and how to save it together.

She says as ambassadors, they have seen that a lot of people are not practicing recycling, reducing and reusing waste and this is why they are part of this initiative to help people.

Waste Recyclers Director and CEO, Amitesh Deo says the students will go through an in-house training on recycling which includes the industry challenges, trade gimmicks and the struggles of the informal waste pickers.

Deo further says the students will also be collecting data about the type of rubbish collected for recycling and volume of waste collected.

The results will be revealed during Global Recycling Day celebrations next year.

He also says to ensure sustainability of the concept, the ambassadors will be the owners of the program and they will take the lead role in guiding the program forward.

The students were also handed recycle bins specifically made to their purpose during the Global Recycling Day celebrations today.
