Bishop James Morton, 80 of 214 New Hope Way, Danville, died, Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.
Born January 18, 1929 in Danville, Virginia he was the son of the late Clay McLaughlin and the late Katherine McGhee Morton. He was married to Elizabeth M. Morton who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Bishop Morton was Pastor Emeritus of Holy Temple of Jesus Christ, Timberlake, North Carolina where he served for 40 years.
Survivors including his wife, Elizabeth Morton of the residence are three daughters, Phyllis Stone and Yeverne Morton both of Danville, Virginia and Yvonne Morton-Williamson of Bel-Air, Maryland, one step-daughter, Elizabeth Moore of Patterson, New Jersey; three sons, Jimmie Morton of New Rochelle, New York, Thomas Morton of Burlington, North Carolina and Tony Overby of Roxboro, North Carolina, two step-sons, William Harden of Danville, Virginia and Alvis Harden of Patterson, New Jersey; two brothers, Robert Morton of Danville, Virginia and William “Buddy” Morton of New Rochelle, New York and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home from 5-8 and at other times at the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 12 Noon at Reboboth Apostolic Church with Bishop A. R. Linder, Eulogist. Interment with full military rites with American Legion Post 29 will follow in Highland Burial Park.
