Marlins bringing back teal throwback uniforms in 2019

The Marlins’ 25th Anniversary Weekend was one of the highlights of this season, and the most popular aspect of that celebration will return in 2019. The team will dust off their teal throwback uniforms and wear them for a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks from July 26-29, Fish Stripes has learned.

The Marlins debuted the teal look against the San Diego Padres to coincide with the anniversary festivities from June 8-10.

Marlins Park averaged a paid attendance of 11,909 during the Padres series. Aside from the season’s opening week, it was the only time that the Fish drew more than 10,000 fans for each game of a home series. No doubt, the special uniforms—and throwback-inspired merchandise—had something to do with that.

Tweets teasing the teal/black/white color scheme last June were among the most engaging posts by the team’s official account all season.

Fans are so enthusiastic about this look because it evokes memories of the 1997 and 2003 World Series champion seasons.

Also, the current color scheme will always be associated with previous owner Jeffrey Loria, who rebranded the franchise as the “Miami Marlins” in 2012 upon moving into the new ballpark. Since then, they haven’t posted a winning record (much less contended for a playoff spot).

Rookies Sandy Alcántara, Pablo López and Austin Dean weren’t yet in the major leagues to participate during the Anniversary Weekend. Health permitting, top prospects like Monte Harrison and Isan Diaz could also receive call-ups in time for the Dbacks series. So this is an opportunity to see the teal uniforms worn by players who actually represent the future of the Marlins.
