Are medical alert systems worth it?
Whether a medical alert system is worth the expense depends on the individual’s specific needs, says Dr. Johnston. “Medical alert systems can provide peace of mind to family, caregivers and the user themselves and help ensure that individuals receive medical assistance (in the event of an emergency).” Caregiver availability, cost, personal preferences, living situations and health/mobility status are all factors to consider, she adds.
How do medical alert systems work?
If you have a medical concern or emergency, press the help button on your medical alert system. If the system features 24/7 monitoring, the device sends a signal to your medical alert provider, connecting you with an emergency response expert at the call center. Often, the operator will connect you with the family member or friend listed in your contact information, notifying them that you need help. In an emergency, they help dispatch an ambulance, the police or the local fire department to your home.
If the system doesn’t offer 24/7 monitoring, a press of the help button will connect you with 911 directly or a predetermined personal contact you selected during the system setup process.
