Hair Tips for Little Girls

  • Choose Functional and Stylish Options: Opt for practical simple hairstyles that are quick to do, ensuring she looks great while you save time during busy mornings!
  • Remove Elastics Carefully: Use small scissors to cut out no-slip elastics at the end of the day. This prevents hair breakage and makes removing them quick and painless.
  • Brush Long Hair Before Bed: Tackle tangles at night to make busy mornings easier. Prepping the hair in advance ensures smoother styling for the day ahead.
  • Stick to Simple Hairstyles: For school days, choose simple styles like ponytails or braids that stay in place and keep hair out of her face. These are perfect for active days and easy to create.
  • Save Elaborate Styles for Special Occasions: While an Elsa braid or a big bow looks adorable, reserve these for events where they can shine without getting messy.

Tips For Making Your Hairstyle Stay In All Day

  • Divide Hair into Sections: Treat the hair as two sections, front and back. While pulling hair into a ponytail seems quick and easy, without proper prep, it can lead to flyaways and tangles by the end of the day.
  • Essential Tools: For hairstyles that stay in place, you’ll need no-slip elastics in various sizes, a standard comb, a fishtail comb for precision, and Goody brand barrettes for young girls.
  • Tame Flyaways: To achieve a sleeker style, use a comb or your hands to smooth hair as you style. You can also lightly dampen hair or use a small amount of styling product (like gel) to keep flyaways under control.
  • Learn the Basics: Mastering a simple three-strand braid is essential for easy little girl hairstyles. While a basic braid works great, a French braid provides a sleeker style and stays in better, though it may take time to perfect. Watching a YouTube video can help you learn both styles quickly.

How To Do Easy Hairstyles for Girls

Start With The Basic Foundation:

Divide the hair into two even sections and secure the front portion into two small pigtails. Then gather all the hair together and tie it into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, as this placement helps it stay secure longer.

Braid Pigtails

Braid the pigtails and secure the front section with barrettes above the ears. Hairbands or bobby pins can work well too. This is our go-to quick hairstyle. It’s best for non-hat days, as the front is prone to flyaways.

The Faux Braided Headband

An easy twist on pigtail braids is to clip them up using small claw barrettes, creating a faux braided headband look. This simple style makes my daughter feel like a princess!

The Winter-Proof Bubble Braid

Divide the hair into two even sections and secure the front portion into two small pigtails. Next, take small sections of hair from each pigtail, tying them back with no-slip elastics. Continue this process down the length of the hair, creating a bubble effect. This hairstyle stays secure and is perfect for wearing under a winter hat!

Bubble Style Modification

Enhance this hairstyle by braiding the tail after securing the bubble sections. It adds extra style and keeps the hair even more secure!

Braided Knot Ponytail

Divide the hair into two even sections and braid the small front pieces, securing each with an elastic. Tie the braid strands into a knot, then pull them back and gather all the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. You can remove the braid elastics before securing the ponytail for a seamless look.

For a different look, braid the end of the ponytail as well. Notice how each modification builds on the original hairstyle for added versatility?

Alternatively, skip the crisscrossing of the front braids and go right into a braid at the nape of the neck. A low bun would work here as well.

Pigtail Crisscross

Part the front section of the hair down the middle and secure each side with no-slip elastics. Next, crisscross the front sections to create an ‘X’ in the back of the head. It’s a simple trick that gives the appearance of a more intricate style. Finish by securing each side into a low pigtail for a cute and easy look!

Tip: Have a claw clip handy to hold the hair you’re not working with to the side for easier styling.

What are some easy hairstyles for girls to prevent lice?

Keeping your child’s hair neat and styled in simple, secure hairstyles like braids, high ponytails, or top knots is an effective way to prevent lice. These styles keep hair contained, making it more difficult for lice to transfer. Options such as French braids or twisted pigtails are particularly helpful because they keep the hair close to the scalp, further reducing the chance of exposure.
Equally important is avoiding shared items like hats, headgear, or helmets, as lice can spread quickly through direct contact. Adding a small amount of tea tree oil to your child’s shampoo can also provide an extra layer of protection against lice. By maintaining tidy hairstyles and avoiding shared headgear, you can help protect your child while they enjoy their day. Plus, the hairstyles featured in this post are not only adorable but also practical for keeping hair lice-free!

Thing 2 is growing her hair out and I am always encouraging her to try her own hair styling. These would work well!

Great ideas! I used a few of these when my daughter was competing in gymnastics. Minimal hair movement required when competing! The three small ponty tails to a larger one was her first competition hair!

Your daughter was such a fantastic model through all of this! I have been doing my daughters hair 3 different ways and I am so tired of them… she has curly hair, so I like to do something with it to keep it out of her face. These are all great, pinning!

    1. We kinda got stuck in that rut of the same do over again. These have most of the same idea, but a little spin on each. My daughter was certainly a good sport, there may have been a treat reward involved!

  8. Thanks for these. Ive actually done a few of these before finding your post. I find putting a drop or two of scented oil or even baby oil to some water helps not only keep hair in place and stop the dreaded nits. Look forward to trying the cross over braid.

  9. Thank you so much for taking the time to share these with us hair-challenged mommies of the world!!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t given the gift of hair styling & my beautiful little girl has been deprived of cute hairstyles, through her eight years of life, because of it. She loves the look of her hair being french braided, even though she hates the near torture I cause to actually accomplish it, but still asks me to do it often. However, she usually only receives a yes for special events or if we successfully plan it out well enough to be able to give me a couple of hours for all the re-do’s I have to do before I succeed, and even then, it usually turns out looking messy and loose & lasts only a few hours, if lucky. Many times, we don’t even make it there because one of us just gets too impatient, frustrated or bored after numerous failed attempts & just gives up. Sadly, what should be an enjoyable precious time together of mother/daughter bonding, usually just turns out to be unenjoyable, frustrating torture for one or both of us & just ends up reminding us of why we go so long avoiding it.

I’m so bad at doing hair, that I only wear my hair straight down or pulled back quickly in a messy bun… And my daughter has only had 3 basic styles in pretty much all 8 years of her life, straight down, in a ponytail & clipping the bangs to the side… How boring….! Sadly enough, it’s all I’ve managed to master in all these years of being a female, how’s that even possible?!… Horrible mommy guilt going on right now, as I’m sure you can tell!! She just has such beautiful long hair & is really starting to be more concerned with her appearance & her hair looking cute, for the boys at school I suspect, so I’m trying to make it my top priority to make time to learn & get better at it, which I honestly wish I would’ve done many years ago for her. But, better late than never, I guess!!

So, thank you very much for sharing these!! They look & seem like they should be fast & simple enough hairstyles, for even horribly hair-challenged mommies like me, to attempt & succeed at, probably for the first time ever!!

I imagine there’s gotta be many cute-hair deprived little girls out there like mine who would love to thank you for teaching their hair-challenged mommies how to do some cute, easy hairstyles so they don’t have to continue through life with oh-so-plain-lookin-hair anymore or having to sit through long, boring torturous attempts at getting a cute Do!!!

I’m excited to attempt most of them this week! I plan on showing them to her later & letting her choose her fav one to begin the week with tomorrow. I may even try talking her into letting me practice tonight just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again!! We appreciate you very much and I’m sure many more do as well!!! God Bless!!

    1. I grew up in a house with 6 girls and my daughter had long hair from the start. Hair doing was just a regular thing for me! So happy you’re going to give them a try! V
