Stratford Canal - Bridge 59
The story associated with this relatively mundane concrete bridge as given on a nearby notice.
'In 1957, allegedly in order to reduce the cost of a new road bridge at this place, national and local authorities combined to bring about the abandonment of the derelict canal. Through the vision, vigilance and determination of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association that attempt was defeated.'
The rest is history with the canal being restored in the 1960s, re-opening in 1964 under the auspices of the National Trust and more recently returned to the custody of British Waterways. This gave encouragement for later re-openings of other abandoned canals.
