Driffield YO25
The Methodist Church viewed from Cranwell Road across Middle Street North. In 1831 Benjamin Fawcett, the Victorian Printer, established his first printing works in premises on what has now become the church's forecourt. Described as one of the finest of English C19th woodblock colour printers Fawcett (1808-93) remarried after the death of his first wife and with his wives raised two families in Driffield. Colour printing was a major change from the much-admired monochrome work of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). At first his wood-engraving illustrations were coloured by hand but later he used a system of colouring from multiple wood blocks. A pub obliquely opposite this forecourt is called The Benjamin Fawcett.
