NX9718 : Whitehaven railway station, Cumbria

taken 12 years ago, near to Whitehaven, Cumbria, England

Whitehaven railway station, Cumbria
Whitehaven railway station, Cumbria
Opened in 1847 by the Whitehaven Junction Railway on the line towards Maryport and Carlisle, the original station site being out of view to the left. The curved line shown here was a southward extension through Bransty tunnel (behind the photographer) opened in 1852 although bizarrely, no platforms appear to have been provided on this line until the 1874 station rebuild! A further two platforms can be seen to the right, which were disused when this image was taken. View north towards Parton and Carlisle.
