From Lea to Loop - Rotton Park, Birmingham
A view of Lea Bridge, straddling the Birmingham Canal New Main Line, and beyond to the entrance, on the left, to the Soho Loop. The Loop is part of the Birmingham Canal Old Main Line, engineered by James Brindley and opened in 1772. It was superseded by Thomas Telford's Birmingham Canal New Main Line, which cut seven miles off the total distance and hence the existence of some now apparently little-used loops. The Soho Loop led to the Soho Wharf, the site of the long-vanished Soho Manufactory. Opened in 1761 by Matthew Boulton, it was a factory making metalware, buttons, coins and buckles - it was demolished at some time during the 19th century. In more recent years, the Time Team television series excavated the site, now covered by private gardens, and found remains of the building. Time photo taken 2.39 pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
