Although nowadays a suburb of Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell has a long history. First mentioned in the Domesday Book as Neuport, meaning new market town in old English, it was given its manorial affix by Faulk Paganel during the reign of William Rufus at the end of the 11th century. Paganel also founded a priory nearby at Tickford which lasted until its dissolution in 1524. There was a castle in medieval times although no trace remains today. The town later became a centre for the lace industry, but is probably best known today for its links with Aston Martin and the M1 services.
