Severn Valley Railway - empty coaching stock movement
The diesel electric class 09 shunter is moving empty carriages. D4100 is an 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter that has also been numbered as 09 012. It was built in 1961 at Horwich Works and was withdrawn from the 'big railway' in 2010. It came to the Severn Valley in 2013 and is usually to be found shunting in the Kidderminster area but has also been known to stand in for failed larger locomotives. The 09 class is pretty much the same as the once ubiquitous 08 class but different gearing gives them less tractive effort and a higher top speed of 27.5 mph. This example is named Dick Hardy after the late railwayman, enthusiast and author.
On the right is class 50 No. 50 049 waiting to depart. This example was built in 1968 and carries the name Defiance. It is preserved by the Class 50 Alliance. Also known as a Hoover, 50 were built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. The engine is an English Electric 16 CSVT diesel displacing 246 litres and generating 2700 brake horsepower. Traction is by 6 electric motors in a Co-Co configuration.
