Many of the descriptions in this square refer to Tyneham, a Tudor manor house, village and estate, as being 'abandoned'. The Daily Telegraph [17 May 2017] carried an obituary of Major General Mark Bond, whose family had owned the estate for 300 years. In 1943 it was requisitioned by the Army for a tank firing range. It had been promised that when the war was over it would be returned to the family, but many years later the Ministry of Defence won the case for retention and Tyneham House and the village fell into ruin. There is no mention of any compensation having been paid.
