Book Breaks with Lindsay M. Chervinsky on Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic

Date & Time:  September 22, 2024, 02:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

book cover: Making the Presidency

In Making the Presidency, Lindsay Chervinsky illustrates the challenges first faced by President John Adams. George Washington—a man of extraordinary prestige—had left to his quixotic and sometimes unlikable successor the questions of how a president should hold power without undermining democracy, manage partisan divisions without suppressing debate, and build up alliances with Europe without inviting re-colonization. John Adams wasn’t the first president, but he played a critical role in establishing the office’s political norms.
