Among the many beauty joys that come along with winter weather—ugh—there's the annoying way static wreaks havoc on would-be glossy, gorgeous hair. Science-wise, it's rather fascinating, but real-life-wise, it's beyond frustrating. I'm leaving the techno explanation for the pros (there are protons and neutrons involved, guys) and instead accepting it's here and figuring out what the heck to do about it.
First things first, I rang up the woman who's been helping me with my ombre for years, the lovely Erika Szabo at Louis Licari, to chat. "Use a moisturizing shampoo, and increase how often you're using a deep conditioner. If you were using it once a week, do it twice," she told me. "You can try dry shampoo, which will give hair texture, and dryer sheets work. Body lotion, like from a little bottle you keep in your purse, on your hands is good too. The trick is to take excess off your hands and start from the bottom, pulling hands through your hair."
Is any of this preventive stuff or can you fight static only after it's started? I could imagine Erika shaking her head at me through the phone and saying, Sorry, babe, but it's all after-the-fact fixes.
"Oh! In an emergency, rub lip balm on your finger and touch up hair. That will do the trick!" she added.
I love all these DIY, use-stuff-you-already-own fixes (Petra has a good one too!), and there's also a ton out there to shop. From items created specifically to combat the problem to finds like deep conditioners and moisturizing shampoos you can always incorporate into your routine, giving your hair some extra TLC is smart no matter the season. Lindsey's been raving about these sheets too, and I'm planning on trying it out soon.
Is static a problem for you? Any fantastic fixes you've found?
