The best silk scrunchies, or rather, any hair scrunchies, sprinkle a touch of a humble glam to your everyday and are guaranteed to elevate any up-do. Or, act as a welcome piece of wrist candy. Cast your minds back to Hailey Bieber at the Met Gala, Lizzo’s bedazzled scrunchies at the VMA’s and Jason Momoa's magical wrist scrunchie all the way back in 2019 if you need proof.
But the benefits of silk iterations in particular go far beyond aesthetics. As is the case with the best silk pillowcases and silk bedding, silk scrunchies are soft and smooth which reduces friction on the hair and works wonders protecting our locks. And since the fabric glides easily over hair, flyaways can be minimised, too.
So, we've worked our magic rigorously testing a variety of silk scrunchies from the likes of Slip and Lily Silk, scoring on smoothness, style and durability (read: how well do they wash?). The silk scrunchies in this edit get the GLAMOUR stamp of approval (and are so much better than those hair-tugging elastic ties you usually use to chuck your hair up in a ponytail).

Why is silk good for your hair?
Silk scrunchies are hair kryptonite, and the benefits of wearing silk scrunchies are extensive. Let’s start with the flyaways. Silk is naturally smooth and soft in texture, which prevents frizziness and reduces thinning, while preventing snags, tangles, breakages and split ends. Elastic hair ties, on the other hand, can cause a lot of tension on the hair which can lead to splits and breakage down the hair shaft in the long run. Healthy hair, incoming.
Silk can also ensure your hairstyle lasts longer. According to Nichola Sott, founder of SilkUp, “the natural properties and anti-static qualities in silk can extend the life of a blow-dry by two days, reducing the need to restyle in the morning and therefore avoiding any additional heat damage.” Impressive, huh? If that wasn't enough, silk hair ties will help minimise the kinks that are left in your strands when you take your hair out of a ponytail. Oh, and unlike those silk pillowcases and bonnets, silk ties and scrunchies can be worn all day long.
Silk is the perfect alternative to keeping your hair tidy and away, day and night, while still looking shiny, fresh and drop dead cute.

How to keep silk scrunchies silky?
As lovely and silky-smooth as silk scrunchies look when you first purchase them, they can get dirty, dull and creased pretty quickly. That is, if you wash them and store them incorrectly. Here are our top tips to keep your silk scrunchies silky and clean.
- Wash: Use a coin-sized amount of hair shampoo and gently rub the silk scrunchie with your hand and rinse under cold or lukewarm water.
- Dry: Leave them to air dry, as they will smell damp if you put them away, they might also stain. They shouldn’t go on a machine as the material is quite delicate and you know those are the type of things to disappear in a washer drier.
- Storage: Drop them on doorknobs, or containers with plenty of room for the scrunchie to hold shape.
