Porous Stones

Porous Stones provide solid support at both ends of soil specimens while allowing free passage of water for triaxial, permeability, consolidation, direct or residual shear, and other laboratory soil tests. The coefficient of permeability, also known as hydraulic conductivity, is the flow of water through a medium. Porous stones do not obstruct water flow into the specimen and possess a coefficient of permeability roughly equivalent to that of fine sand; 1 x 10-4cm/s. Porous stones are made of quality aluminum oxide or bronze.

Porous Stones for Soil Sample Testing

Round stones are used in triaxial, permeability, consolidation, and direct or residual shear strength soil testing. They are available with 0.25in (6.35mm) or 0.5in (12.7mm) thickness and range in diameter sizes from 1.400 to 6.00in (35.6 to 152.4mm).

Square stones are used in testing direct or residual shear strength. They are available with 0.25in (6.35mm) thickness and range in sizes from 1.953x1.953in to 3.985x3.985in (49.6x49.6mm to 101.2x101.2mm). A 12x12in (304.8x304.8mm) square Porous Stone is also available with 0.5in (12.7mm) thickness for use with the High Capacity Geosynthetic Direct Shear Machine.
