Dreams begin to come true

By Andriy Butenko | Project Leader

Dear friends!

Thank you for the opportunity to continue our project.

We have long dreamed of giving the joy of  playing with sighted peers to blind children. We plan to create the first toy library in Ukraine, to organize leisure for blind children together with their sighted peers.

We have many plans, but there was no means, experience and people who were ready to help us adapt the board games. Now we have a team of enthusiasts (specialists, parents, volunteers) who are ready to adapt modern board games.

During the reporting period, we carefully studied the international experience in adaptation of table games for blind children and youth and saw that the list of games adapted for the blind in Europe is quite large, but in Ukraine there are very few such games and they are very expensive, therefore they are not available for children.

We are ready to create a game library of table games that blind families can order, we will conduct master classes to teach the game.

The essence of adaptation of table games for blind players is to touch (tactilely) a person could distinguish cards, figures, chips. To do this, each color is marked with special tactile markers - signs. It can be the borders on one of the kinds of figures of a certain color, the tactile points on the top of the figure or the groove carved on the bottom of the game figures of a certain color.

And we have already started to work. To date, prepared for adaptation: games-quizzes, "What, where, when?", "Explain the word", "Erudite", "Strategic sea battle." And we tested them with blind children. Children are delighted.

Very interesting cooperation with us has developed with the team of the creators of the new Ukrainian game "Vazhnitsa". "Vazhnitsa" is a game that unites generations, develops intellectually and spiritually, and also inspires further study of the native language, literature, history, culture. Each of us has our own mission. She is also in Vazhnitsy - girl-messenger, which will save Ukraine. The scribe must deliver and present to the Ukrainian people a magic stone with pure Ukrainian language. To do this, the Wizard must go through the maze of the game. You can help her to fulfill her mission with her knowledge, logic and erudition.

The creation of adapted games will ensure the joint play of blind and healthy children, the creation of a single full-fledged children's play space and the inclusion of children with vision problems in society.

Another our victory is that the German firm Baer is ready to support our project and allocate 2,000 euros for its implementation.

About our project we shot a story on television.

We need resources to purchase the equipment necessary to adapt the games. While we do everything with our own hands. We really hope for your support!

Best regards,

Valentina Butenko
