Preserve Huron River Drive (Ann Arbor)!

The Michigan Dept. of Transportation (MDOT) is proposing to build a 6-8 ft tall steel fence along Huron River Drive in Ann Arbor. The fence would run between the railroad tracks and the road, separating both wildlife and residents from the river along which they live. MDOT's justification for the fence is to improve safety, but the data clearly show that train strikes and near-misses are not an issue here.

Fence style proposed for Huron River Drive by MDOT

These funds will be used to help us fight to block construction of this unnecessary barrier (e.g. signage, legal fees)

This high, obtrusive fence would have a series of negative impacts, including:

1) Disrupting wildlife habitat. The Huron River is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and birds. The fence would block their access to food and water, and it could also lead to injuries or deaths.

2) Detracting from the natural beauty of the area. Huron River Drive is a scenic route of astounding natural beauty. The steel fence would be a stark contrast to the trees and vegetation along the river, and it would create a sense of isolation and division. HRD is also a major cycling destination in the area that attracts many thousands of cyclists a year whose experience will likewise be impacted.

3) Blocking bike and walking trails: MDOT has failed to work with the Border to Border bike trail project across Washtenaw County, hindering or even preventing the long-awaited completion of this extremely popular project. Also, this proposed fence would block existing walking trails that are much safer than walking along West Huron River Drive.

4) Limiting access to the Huron River, which is a major asset for Ann Arbor and a popular spot for recreation. Creating a barrier between the community and the railroad, which would make it more difficult for people to walk or bike along the river.

5) Decreasing safety: This fence would make it more difficult for emergency responders to access the area in the event of an accident.

6) Using state funds to benefit private companies. The railroad that runs along West Huron River Drive is mainly used by private companies, such as freight trains. The state should not be using taxpayer money to build a fence that primarily benefits these companies. They should be paying for the costs to keep us safe.
