My October Predictions:
1. Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
2. Timothee Chalamet, A Complete Unknown
3. Colman Domingo, Sing Sing
4. Ralph Fiennes, Conclave
5. Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice6. Daniel Craig, Queer
7. John David Washington, The Piano Lesson
8. Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain
9. Glen Powell, Hit Man
10. Paul Mescal, Gladiator 2Mescal’s only here because Joker 2 might have single-handedly destroyed the entire superhero genre and I don’t know who else to put in. It’s still Craig vs Stan for that 5th slot unless A Complete Unknown completely blows. Globe Comedy feels like Eisenberg vs Powell right now.

Maybe just focusing on Strong, who I can see winning – after watching the film – specially if Culkin is moved to Lead, as plenty are saying he should.

Even if he is truly a lead that doesn’t mean he will change categories. Both actor and supporting actor essentially have three spots almost locked and then a broad range of contenders for 4 and 5. Even if Strong is seen by many as having the best performance there is more than that needed to win and with a movie performing weekly after massive coverage the realistic state of the film right now is that it’s going to drop further and further and a globes nom for acting will most likely not even save momentum

1) Brody
2) Fiennes
3) Domingo
4) Chalamet
5) StanAlso, moving Strong to lead would be a mistake considering they have an actual lead in the same film with strong reviews, maybe not better than Jeremy, but still acclaimed.

By submitting the film in the musical categories, they could’ve managed to get a best film nomination at the globes, that is not very likely now considering the drama competition
And possibly even a best actor win for Timothee
James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic ‘A COMPLETE UNKNOWN’ will be submitted for consideration in the Drama categories at the Golden Globes.

Well just like BR it’s not a musical or a comedy. Its submission would obviously get overturned.

It worked for walk the line, there’s multiple musical numbers in the film qualifying it for the nomination
And i don’t remember what BR stood for

Well a golden globe win would have cemented him as a frontrunner, but now not anymore

They’ve become more stringent about the rules since then. The days where Jamie Foxx and Marion Cotillard could submit as a “musical” performer despite not doing a note of their own singing (and in films that couldn’t be considered comedies either) are over.
Also dunno if it was meant as a dig but BR was Bohemian Rhapsody which submitted (and won!) drama, even with Rami Malek doing some of his own singing (mixed with that of Freddie Mercury). These days films have to function as a genuine musical to compete in the comedy/musical category.

I think The Apprentice might pull off a 3 acting nominations stunt, specially since all three main actors, have different narratives that don’t clash with each other, beyond the will to reward the film. Strong is “magnetic”, Bakalova is “brilliant, making a three-dimensional woman” (with the little screen-time she’s given, and is the only previous nominee of the three) and Stan nails a younger Trump’s raise (or downfall into monstrosity) and has another Award-worthy performance this year, with “A Different Man”. It has the potential, but also can clearly be overlooked.
I think the fight for the win is between Brody and Fiennes, but Stan comes 3rd. Strong is 2nd after Culkin in Supporting, and Bakalova is an enigma yet, she has the potential even to win, out of sympathy votes – and what a speech she would give, as she’s playing at core, an amalgam of all victims of abuse by Trump and the like.

Just fact-checked this after posting, this actually isn’t quite accurate, Foxx did some covers of Charles in his younger years and Cotillard performed one song, ‘Frou-Frou’, as Piaf. But for the most part they were lip-syncing.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 18, 2024 at 8:28 am #1205990834In fairness how can anyone do Piaf or even Ray?
Maybe Beverly D’Angelo in her heyday.
