I personally liked it on a second rewatch
Knowing what to expect, the musical numbers are really well executed despite it’s originality
i wish we saw more about the backstory of some of the characters tho
And zoe Saldana will be sweeping (despite i wasn’t entirely convinced when i first watched it)
November 13, 2024 at 5:55 pm #1206016331I don’t want to be that person, but I can’t help feeling a bit vindicated by the reception this film is getting. Not because I hate it or take pleasure in others agreeing with me, but because two months ago, I voiced my concerns about the film. I even called out the exact scene that’s now gone viral on Twitter, only to be met with accusations of transphobia and worse.
The issue is that many overzealous fans try to paint this film as a critically acclaimed masterpiece, when it’s really just average. As I said back then, the film shines most when Saldaña’s physicality takes center stage—her dancing practically commands the screen. But too many of the musical numbers fall flat, the screenplay oversimplifies its characters, and the overall tone feels inconsistent.

I also had an even stronger liking of the film the second time around. I realized I was more willing to succumb to what the film was offering which meant not expecting what I think should happen next. Additionally, La Vaginoplastia is supposed to be in conversation with the later songs involving Emilia Past. Rita doesn’t really understand what is being asked of her and the viewer is also confronted with the notion of how most folks normally view trans people. Trans folks are constantly bombarded about questions relating to their body and surgery. Songs Lady and then, Deseo are meant to help Rita understand why it is so important for Emilia to transition.
My second viewing of Emilia Pérez reminded me of how I fought against Nickel Boys throughout the film because of the shooting style. Most narrative feature films are very similar so when you watch an actual experimental film, you fight against the form. It’s like trying to watch something Brechtian. You’re not supposed to connect with the characters emotionally so when I see something Brechtian, I’m hard wired to not enjoy the experience because there is no emotional connection.
November 13, 2024 at 7:51 pm #1206016470As someone that watched the movie on theaters at a movie festival a couple of weeks ago, I can say that some people are completely overreacting, and most people are just going with whatever twitter is saying.
I perfectly remember the moment that viral scene was playing and in my mind it was so weird, but it also made so much sense in the context of the movie, it felt like the scene was exactly how it was supposed to be and all you can think while watching it is “i don’t know what tf is this but its blowing my mind and I can’t get enough of it”. It’s that kind of movie that when you’re watching it you don’t truly know why but the moment it ends and you leave the theater you completely understand the whole vision.
The movie is clearly not made to be a blockbuster and certainly not to be completely enjoyable for the general public- I have not idea how the experience is through streaming since it’s not released on Netflix Latam yet, but I can say that the theater experience is one of a kind, something that you don’t truly see in the big screen often and a MUST if you really love not only watching movies but the cinematographic world.

Zoe better go to lead and Karla deserves Supporting Actress. I was hating on Selena, but she deserves a nomination as well.

The performances, especially from Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez were electric – all of whom are Oscar worthy and I better see them nominated everywhere! I was additionally mesmerised by Jacques Audiard’s direction, and the cinematography was amazing. Emilia Pérez is completely chaotic, idiosyncratic, yet hilariously charming, awe-inspiring, and just overall inimitable. There were a couple of moments that I wish were developed a bit more, especially towards the end of the movie, but that’s my only critique. I’ve never watched a movie like it; at times it was genuinely so surreal but that’s what intrigued and compelled me to want more. And I cannot wait to watch again because I am obsessed.

Saldaña is even better than Gascón, that being said, Gascón would barely reach to my top 5 leading female performances I’ve seen so far
- Swinton
- Julianne
- Demi
- Kirsten
- Zoe (going Supporting, but she’s a co-lead)
- Karla-Sofía
- Mikey
- Zendaya
November 14, 2024 at 1:12 pm #1206017543Wow what a brilliant film. this was my most anticipated film of the year and it exceeded my expectations. The directing and writing were superb. The performances were phenomenal. The songs were beautiful they made me tear up twice while watching the film. I was surprised by how good Selena’s Gomez was because her performance in Only Murders in the Building is a hit or miss for me but her she was fantastic probably her best performance. Karla Sofia Gascon was transcendental but she was a supporting character and should be in the right category. The heart and soul for is Zoe Saldana she was heartbreakingly mesmerizing. She not only should be in Best Actress she deserves to win. The film is my favourite of the year and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. I hope it is an across the board contender because it deserves to be!
ReplyCopy URLNovember 14, 2024 at 2:50 pm #1206017687This movie is so so so so so so awful oh my god. And i know it’s trying to be progressive but there’s some scenes that are explicitly transphobic. Won’t be mad at love for the cast but that’s where it should stop.
Also, the story entails ten or more layered stories from which you can make several movies. It is incoherent, which will be detrimental to its campaign. I see the movie missing the best picture from that perspective.

November 14, 2024 at 2:59 pm #1206017695I didn’t like this film, which isn’t surprising given that the only Jacques Audiard movie I truly enjoy is Rust and Bone. The cinematography is quite tacky. While the narrative is more engaging, it’s only marginally better than A Prophet, which doesn’t mean much to me. What surprises me the most is the hype surrounding Karla Sofía Gascón’s clumsy performance. All in all, I have to mention that Anthony Vaccarello did a good job with the costume design. 5/10
I did not like it and did not dislike it, just an ambivalent or indifferent reaction, although I like musicals. I also thought Rust and Bone was more coherent in its message than this mess.

As someone said, you just cant take your eyes off of her whenever she’s on screen. The woman she is.
