Standing on the first tee in a four-ball containing the oldest member I heard a story about Cameron Smith the young Aussie golfer on the PGA tour. Apparently, according to this reliable source, a very young Cam Smith was at a junior event with Greg Norman and his former coach Charlie Earp. There the older coach told Mister Norman that young Cam had a better swing than the dual major winner and hands off him or words to that effect. Smith’s victory at the recent Tournament of Champions in Maui franks that early recognition in spades. Cameron Smith is a champion of champions on the toughest golf tour on the planet.
What Makes Cameron Smith So Good?
Short game, short game, and short game. The young superstar golfer is now lauded for his mastery of putter and wedges. He saw off Justin Thomas in the singles at the last Presidents Cup. Cam Smith has an unflappable touch on and around the greens no matter the occasion. Golf is won or lost with flat stick in hand. Driving for show but putting for dough. Weekend warriors and hackers could learn a lot from his example of this fact. Smith is now, however, a complete all round tournament professional. He hits it long, he hits it close, and he makes the putts. We could all take a leaf or two out of this champion golfer’s kit bag.
Smith Shoots Record Score on PGA Tour
The Queensland lad with the wispy locks and facial hair strides the fairways of the toughest golf courses and brings them to their knees. 34 under on the Maui course is bloody fine golf and now stands as the record in a PGA tournament. Smith is clearly the best Australian golfer on the global stage. Adam Scott is waning. Leishman is behind him. Lucas Herbert is coming. The young Cam Smith can look forward to a bumper 2022 and now sits third on the FedEx Cup ladder.
Triumphing Over the World No 1
over the closing rounds of the Tournament of Champions is no mean feat. Triumphing over the world number one must boost the confidence of Smith. To play fantastic golf over four days inside the pressure cooker of competing against the winners on the world’s best tour is a powerful achievement. I would have understood if young Cam had of wilted on Sunday, but he didn’t. He played sublime golf hitting fairway after fairway and green after green. Even when Rahm birdied, and he only parred he didn’t stumble. Cameron Smith remained focused and committed to victory over the closing stages of a great championship. Look out for more major opportunities in 2022 for Smith.
