Searching for your perfect bra can feel like a never-ending journey. For starters, there are so many styles to choose from — strapless bras, bralettes, wireless and more — each with different types of padding, closures and support. Not to mention, you want to ensure you’re investing in a quality bra that will feel good, look good and hold up well over time.
Our Top Pick: The Natori Pure Luxe Custom Coverage Bra is the best bra for most people because of its classic underwire design that testers with small and large breasts find comfortable to wear all day. The Maidenform One Fab Fit Modern Demi Convertible Underwire Bra is a top-performing, affordable pick at around $20.
Fiber scientists and apparel experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have evaluated more than 200 bra styles over the past few years, creating dozens of bra reviews. We assess each one in the Lab for properties like stretch recovery, construction and how well they hold up to repeated laundering. We also have had over 500 consumer testers — ranging from people with small cup sizes to larger busts — try them out and share their thoughts on fit, comfort, appearance and more. Our latest test included over 100 testers with AA–H cup sizes and 30–48 band sizes.
Pros
- Smooth fabric with comfortable fit
- Good support
- Wide range of cup sizes available
Cons
- Lace straps are noticeable under some tops
Band sizes: 30–38 | Cup sizes: B–G | Colors: 23 options | Style notes: Underwire, adjustable straps, hook-eye closure, demi padding
This Natori style earned the top spot in both our Lab and consumer tests; those with both small and large cup sizes rated it the most comfortable bra of the bunch. On top of that, it proved to be durable in our Lab testing: It washed well and retained its shape even after we stretched it out. In fact, it's the bra our experts have preferred to wear for years, even after trying dozens of styles on the market.
✔️ It's a traditional bra available in cup sizes B–G that's ideal for everyday wear, thanks to its foam cups, supportive underwire, adjustable straps and hook-eye closure. It has plenty of coverage throughout, yet remains invisible under most clothing, though a few testers shared that the lace straps were noticeable under some tops. It also comes in a variety of colors — including neutral shades and vibrant hues — and a wide range of cup sizes.
✔️ Users loved the smooth fabric and said it fit well, felt supportive, didn’t shift and was easy to put on and take off. All of our testers reported that this bra ran true to size, appreciating that it was easy to find a proper fit. "The inside of the bra is super smooth and feels good on my skin," said one tester with a 34B bra size. "I could wear it under any thin T-shirt, and it didn’t show through.”
✔️ It received impressively high comfort scores among testers with both small and large breasts. One GH analyst with a 36C bra size (who has tested hundreds of bras for Good Housekeeping) said, “I barely noticed I was wearing a bra because nothing dug into me and it stayed in place: straps, band and all." She still finds this to be true after wearing the bra for years. Similarly, a 34DD bra size reviewer told us, “It was perfect in every way! It felt invisible, but did its job perfectly.”
Maidenform One Fab Fit Modern Demi Convertible Underwire Bra
Pros
- Affordable price
- Testers said the fabric felt smooth and soft
- Lightly padded for lift
Cons
- Shrunk a bit in Lab tests
Band sizes: 32–42 | Cup sizes: A–DD | Colors: 13 options | Style notes: Underwire, convertible racerback straps, lightly padded, demi style
At just around $20, this affordable Maidenform bra outperformed other styles that were quadruple its price. It received perfect scores from testers for comfort, support and fit. This bra is labeled as a demi style, but it offers more coverage up top than most other demi style bras we tested.
✔️ The convertible straps offer natural-looking, comfortable lift — it's easy to wear this bra as a racerback for extra support. The cups are lightly padded which also adds some lift and prevents gaping, but we found it's not too bulky. "It's a great everyday bra; It's a bra that I don't have to think about while I'm wearing it," said one 34B-bra-size tester. "It doesn't gap anywhere, and it looks seamless under clothing. I also crossed the straps in the back to wear with a racerback top, which is a nice feature."
✔️ This bra starts at just $20, but isn't cheaply made. The material is both super smooth and durable, acing our Lab stretch recovery tests. Just be sure to hand-wash this bra carefully for best results, as it shrunk a bit when we machine-laundered it.
✔️ This bra was one of the few styles to receive a perfect overall performance score from testers, earning top marks in fit, comfort, support, staying in place and ease of putting on/taking off. Testers with both A and D cup sizes found this bra to fit well, feel comfortable and offer ample support up top. A 36D tester reported that it was "definitely sufficiently supportive," loving that the "underwire and lightly lined cups held everything in place." A 34A bra size tester said, "I have a small cup size and I felt like there were no gaps or overflows. It felt just right."
Pros
- Vast assortment of colors and sizes, including half-cup sizes
- Generous return policy with free return shipping
- Smoothing panels
Cons
- Didn't retain its shape as well as others
Band sizes: 32–44 | Cup sizes: A–H, including half cup sizes | Colors: 15 options | Style notes: Underwire, adjustable pleated straps, hook-eye closure, thin memory foam cups
ThirdLove is one of the most searched-for bra brands online, thanks in part to its inclusive features that help you find the perfect fit. First, you take a quiz to help you pick out the right style and size, then you get free shipping and a generous 60-day return period to make sure you love it.
✔️ The brand is also unique in the wide range of sizes it offers. This popular style goes up to a 44 band size and comes in half-cup sizes for anyone who's in between. The website shows the bras on several models so you can see how it fits different body types.
✔️ This T-shirt bra is intended for everyday wear with its underwire for lift, foam cups to shape and pleated straps to prevent slippage on shoulders. Plus, it held up well to washing in the Lab, though it didn't fully regain its shape after we stretched it out. Giving it a nearly perfect score across the board, one 40A-bra-size tester said, "It's comfortable, has nice features (like the stretchy straps) and lays smoothly under clothing." Although she gave it lower marks for support, a tester with a 34DD bra size said, the straps "stayed in place and were super comfortable."
✔️ Testers liked how soft and comfortable the materials felt, and those with smaller cup sizes especially liked the fit and shaping benefits without the use of too much padding. It features smoothing panels on the side, so it stays hidden under fitted tops. One tester with a 34A bra size said, "I love how soft this bra is which feels great on the skin!" She said it was unlike any other bra material she'd tried before. "This was a great basic bra that felt very comfortable," reported a tester with a 32C bra size. "I could easily wear it with almost any outfit, and it didn't dig into any weird places on my body."
Freya Idol Moulded Balcony Bra
Pros
- Cup sizes up to L
- Supportive yet stylish
- Good shaping benefits
Cons
- Some online reviewers said it runs small
Band sizes: 28–38 | Cup sizes: B–HH (UK sizing; equivalent to B–L in US sizing) | Colors: 15 options | Style notes: Underwire, adjustable straps, hook-eye closure, lightly lined
Finding a good bra can be especially difficult if you have a larger cup size, but this fashionable yet functional style from Freya may end your shopping struggles.
✔️ It goes up to a UK cup size HH (which is equivalent to a US cup size L) and it performed exceptionally well in our tests. It was durable in our Lab’s evaluations without any issues to report, and our tester panel loved wearing it.
✔️ The thoughtful design offers support yet still works with most clothing because the cut isn't too high and the straps aren't too wide. It's adjustable and has an underwire for good separation, plus soft cups for a rounded shape. Although our testers found it to fit nicely, some online reviewers shared that it runs on the smaller side, so be sure to review the size chart before buying, especially since it's offered in UK cup sizing.
✔️ Our testers for this style ranged from cup sizes D through G, and they said it was comfortable, fit well, felt supportive and looked great. A tester with a 34G bra size said, "The bra was very supportive and held everything perfectly in place." She especially appreciated that "it fit just right and it is hard to find a bra like that for me." One 36D-bra-size wearer loved that “it was functional without looking like a granny bra," and a 36DD-bra-size tester agreed, saying, "I love the design of the bra — feminine, flirty and cute." Besides appreciating its style, another tester with a 34G bra size noted, "I love the support, too."
Pros
- No gaping, according to testers
- Stays hidden under clothes
- Designed specifically for smaller chests
Cons
- Testers found this bra to be less durable than other styles they own
Band sizes: 30–42 | Cup sizes: AA–B | Colors: 5 options | Style notes: Underwire, contoured cups, mesh overlay, adjustable straps
Pepper designs its bras specifically for AA-, A- and B-cup wearers, unlike other bra designs that may just be scaled down to fit smaller cup sizes.
✔️ This bra is specifically designed to prevent gaping for a smooth fit under clothes — and testers reported that the brand succeeds, praising its great fit on smaller chests. The cups are lightly lined for modest coverage and shaping without excess material. Because many people with smaller chests are forced to wear bras not properly designed for them, many testers were unsure of their proper size and had to try a few to find their best fit.
✔️ Pepper bras did decently well in Lab tests, but some testers reported durability issues. The bras stayed in great condition after stretch recovery tests and after laundering them five times, but some testers noted some fraying and even torn straps. We also tested the brand's wire-free bra and T-shirt bra, and both were popular among testers with smaller chests too.
✔️All our A- and AA-cup testers appreciated how well the cups fit. "I would recommend to women who have tiny boobs," reported one tester with a 34A bra size. "There were no empty gaps with this bra." Also praising its fit, one tester with a 32B bra size shared, "I loved that there was no gaping between my skin and the bra and that the fabric of the cups was super smooth so that it laid flat under T-shirts and under other clothing." They also liked how comfortable the fabric felt and that there wasn't too much padding. One 32A-bra-size tester even said, "It gave me cleavage, which many bras don't!"
Pros
- Inexpensive
- Perfect scores for comfort, support and fit
- Smoothing benefits
Cons
- Less separation for larger cup sizes
- Stretched out a bit in Lab tests
Sizes: S–3XL (covers sizes 36B–46C) | Colors: 15 options | Style notes: Wireless, adjustable straps, hook-eye closure, foam-lined cups, extra coverage side panels
This bra outperformed dozens of other wireless bra styles, earning high ratings in every area of our consumer evaluations. It has a band for support instead of an underwire and its adjustable straps and hook-eye closure in the back allow for a custom fit.
✔️ The fabric is stretchy so it moves with you like a second skin. It also has smoothing panels for side support and to eliminate bulges. It was a tester favorite with one tester with a 46C bra size saying, "It's the most comfortable bra I've ever worn," and she reported that she even ordered more colors after testing. Testers also noted how soft the fabric felt, with some saying they forgot they were even wearing a bra.
✔️ It's available in a great size range, but has a confusing sizing system. Unlike most bras where you shop by the band and cup size, this one ranges from small to 3X and has a size guide to follow when you buy. It's designed for band sizes 34 through 46 — which is a wider range than most styles, though it only specifies cup sizes B to DD in its size chart. And while it offers great shaping benefits with some built-in padding, it doesn't separate as well as underwire bras.
✔️ Testers were especially impressed with its supportive fit for a wireless bra. Reviewers on our panel unanimously said it fit well, felt comfortable, stayed in place and looked great under clothing. Even though it's wireless, a tester said that it "provided more support than a typical wireless bra." One tester added, "I wear 34DD and it is hard to easily find bras that fit well and have wide shoulder bands — This bra is excellent in that aspect."
Pros
- Support without padding
- Testers loved the fit of the straps
- Sexy silhouette and mesh material
Cons
- Less coverage and shape than padded bras
Band sizes: 30–44 | Cup sizes: A–H | Colors: 22 options | Style notes: Underwire, adjustable straps, hook-eye closure, unlined
An unlined bra is for anyone who prefers to avoid padding in the cups, regardless of bra size. This style is especially popular in the mesh fabrication featured here, but is also available in modal, which offers more nipple coverage.
✔️ This lightweight bra has the separation and support of an underwire bra with mesh fabric in the cup area. It also has a flattering plunge neckline for a sexy silhouette. Loving its "lingerie-like look," one tester with a 34D bra size said, "This is the sexiest bra I own and I feel super confident when I wear it." Because of the see-through material, nipples can be slightly visible.
✔️ The straps stood out because they stayed put. They lie flat without slipping and are the ideal width to be supportive yet discreet. The mesh material is surprisingly substantial yet soft to comfortably hold your breasts in place. A 36G-bra-size wearer said, "The fabric is smooth and doesn’t get stuck under clothing. I was happy that the straps stayed in place without slipping all day."
✔️ Both testers with smaller and larger chests liked this bra. A tester with a 34A bra size told us, "I am shocked with how comfortable this wired bra was to wear all day long. Nothing poked or prodded my skin, and it did not feel tight and compacted."
Wacoal Red Carpet Strapless Bra
Pros
- Stays in place all day
- Fits a wide range of cup sizes
- Multiple shades of nudes
Cons
- Some online reviewers said the bra band digs in
Band sizes: 30–44 | Cup sizes: B–H | Colors: 5 options | Style notes: Underwire, removable convertible straps, hook-eye closure, light padding, non-slip binding around band
This bra proves you don’t have to sacrifice support to go strapless. In fact, it had higher scores from our testers than many of the non-strapless styles we analyzed.
✔️ It uses silicone strips along the top of the cup and on the band that help it stay in place as you move, and it features wide side panels with boning for more stability and smoothing benefits. Our panel unanimously said it stayed in place all day. Our testers said the bra was comfortable, but a few online reviewers noted that although the bra stayed put, the silicone strips and boning dug in.
✔️ It held up well in our Lab tests without shrinking or stretching out. It also comes with removable straps so you can wear it as a traditional bra, halter, criss-cross or one-shoulder style. Plus, it comes in a variety of colors and a wide range of band and cup sizes.
✔️ Testers with larger cup sizes reported it fit well with no spillage or gaping in the cups, and they said it looked great with their outfits. "I’ve always thought strapless bras had to be compressive or tight in order to stay on your body, but this bra proves that comfortable strapless bras DO exist," reported one satisfied tester with a 34D bra size. After wearing it to a wedding, a tester with a 34C bra size told us, "I wasn't pulling it up all day like I normally do with strapless bras." A tester with a 40DDD bra size agreed, adding, "It stayed in place and gave great support."
Pros
- Soft and smooth material
- Flattering V-neckline
- Durable in our Lab tests
Cons
- Only somewhat supportive, according to some testers
Sizes: XS–6XL (suitable for cup sizes A-DDD and band sizes 30–50) | Colors: 13 options | Style notes: Wireless, non-adjustable straps, pull-on, no padding
Testers were obsessed with the luxuriously soft feel of this Harper Wilde bralette with a flattering V-neckline and gave it high scores across the board, especially for comfort and fit.
✔️ This bra has a soft yet smooth feel without foam, wires or cups. It has a thick bottom band to offer decent support, though not as much as a traditional underwire or a contoured wire-free bra. We love that this style is available up to a 6XL, which the brand says is suitable for up to a 50DDD.
✔️ While many bralettes we tested stretched out substantially in our Lab testing, this bralette proved to be durable. It received a perfect score in our stretch recovery test, returning to its original shape. It also barely shrunk after being machine washed on the gentle cycle and hung up to dry.
✔️ Testers reported this bra was so comfortable they forgot they were wearing it. A tester with a 32DD bra size found this bra offered enough support for all-day wear; she even said, "I usually take bras off as soon as I’m home, but I wore this to sleep; it was so comfortable." A tester with a 36C bra size said, "Many [bralettes] often lose shape or support over time, but this bra felt significantly more supportive while being just as soft and comfortable as other bralettes." Though some testers said it was only somewhat supportive.
Pros
- Creates natural cleavage
- Testers found it comfy to wear all day
- Push up style for both small and large cup sizes
Cons
- Not all testers liked the decorative "V" between the cups
Band sizes: 32–44 | Cup sizes: A–DDD | Colors: 16 options | Style notes: Underwire, padded, push-up cups, adjustable and convertible straps
Create sexy cleavage and lift with this top-tested push-up bra from Victoria's Secret. The adjustable straps convert to a racerback design for even more lift.
✔️ It features extra padding on the sides of the cup to create natural-looking cleavage while still being comfortable to wear. One tester with a 34DD bra size said, "It was as supportive as the bras I already have with a little more oomph from the padding."
✔️ This bra has smoothing sides for added comfort, but it stretched out a bit in Lab tests. The convertible straps allow you to wear it as a racerback for even more cleavage. We appreciate that this bra is made with recycled polyamide and recycled polyester, making it a more sustainable purchase. "Straps are also comfortable, and I liked that the bra hid the bulge on my back," noted a 38C tester. "I liked how comfortable it was and that I was not aware that I was wearing it (which is a big plus for me)." We washed this bra five times in the Lab and noticed minimal changes in appearance, though the brand recommends handwashing this style for best results over time. In our stretch recovery tests, the bottom band did stretch out a bit.
✔️ Even those who thought they wouldn't like a push-up bra were blown away by the comfortable feel and supportive fit of this style. One tester with a 34DD bra size said, "I always thought a push-up was for those with smaller breasts, but I think that this could also benefit those with bigger breasts that need a little lift without making them look even larger." Another tester with a 32D bra size reported that this bra is "definitely an effective pushup bra." There is a decorative "V" between the cups that some testers could have done without.
How we test bras
Our evaluations consist of performance and durability tests in our Textiles Lab along with consumer tests to get in-depth feedback from wearers with a variety of body types during real-life use.
We have tested over 200 different bra styles, including underwire, wireless, strapless, backless and full-coverage bras with demi, balconette and unlined cups. With over 500 testers participating in our latest test, our testers wore sizes that ranged from AA to H cups and 30 to 48 bands. We are continuing to work to include more testers with a range of body shapes and sizes in our tests.
Here's how we review each style:
- Stretch recovery: Bras are made to stretch so they can give you the right fit, but they must maintain their shape after use in order to provide support. To make sure the elastic doesn't lose its stretch, we mark a section of the bra then stretch it to a standard measurement and clamp it in place for two hours (pictured here). After we release the bra, we measure the markings to see how well it returned to its original shape after one minute. We then remeasure again after one hour.
- Washability: Each bra is repeatedly laundered according to its care label and assessed for aspects like shrinkage and appearance after washing.
- Wear tests: Users with a range of band and cup sizes try the bras and fill out thorough surveys, scoring factors like the ease of putting it on and taking it off, fit, comfort, support, stay-in-place capabilities, visibility under clothes and overall appearance. Testers also have the opportunity to share comments about specific things they liked and disliked about each bra.
How to shop online for bras
Many people love shopping for bras online. It can be more convenient to try on bras in the comfort of your own home instead of a store dressing room. Still, there are some important aspects to keep in mind to ensure you're making a smart purchase without feeling or wearing it first:
- Check the return policy to make sure you can get a refund if it's not a good fit. Many online bra retailers offer free shipping both ways so you can try on a few and send back whatever doesn't fit.
- Take advantage of customer service. Tracy Freno, the bra fit expert at Bare Necessities, explains, "Many sites are equipped with fitting experts — whether by phone, chat, social media or other means of communication — who are trained to help answer any questions you may have regarding fit, style or even suggestions of what to buy."
- Do your research before you start shopping. Jene Luciani, the best-selling author of The Bra Book, suggests educating yourself as much as possible before you buy so that you understand the lingo when picking out your ideal bra. Whether it's understanding the terms in the product descriptions or figuring out which style is best for your body type, Luciani stresses the importance of researching ahead of time. She says: "I suggest knowing how to measure yourself and then following their sizing charts as much as possible, and also knowing what styles would be most suitable for you. For example, someone with very full breasts probably isn’t going to be happy with a demi cup. If it says full coverage, that’s more suitable."
How to find your correct bra size
You can start by measuring your bra size at home or with a consultant in a store. Even then, you should still try on a few different sizes to see what fits and feels best. Freno urges you to focus on what feels good instead of getting caught up on a specific size, especially because fit varies between brands.
It may help to go up and down a few band or cup sizes if the fit doesn’t feel right. Just like with clothing, each brand will fit you differently.
How should a bra fit?
- You should fill out the cups without any gaping (which means the cup is too big) or overflow (a sign the cup is too small).
- The band should be level with your ribcage without riding up, and the center gore, the section of the bra that stretches between the two cups, should lie flat against your breastbone.
- The straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders. Adjusting the straps can help you find a better fit. Making the straps tighter can often give you more lift and support, which helps get rid of back and shoulder pain.
How many bras should you own?
"It will depend on your lifestyle and personal preferences," says Freno. "I generally recommend four everyday styles plus three specialty bras (e.g., strapless styles)." Luciani suggests stocking up once you find your perfect style. "If you have that 'favorite' bra that you’re tempted to wear every day, I recommend buying more than one," she says. "For example, if it’s that nude T-shirt bra — buy three or four."
When should you replace your bra?
"The rule of thumb is about 100 washes/wears," Freno says. But since most of us are likely not keeping track, it’s best to replace your bra when it loses its stretch and no longer feels supportive.
"Obvious signs of wear and tear such as crushed cups, bent underwire, stretched-out straps, broken or bent clasps and when the material loses its elasticity — all good signs it’s time to toss," Luciani adds. "Other signs that are maybe not so obvious are if it suddenly seems big or it’s not holding you up the way it should be! That may mean it’s time to replace," she says.
Be aware that the more you wear and wash the bra, the faster it'll need to be replaced. And because your size can change over time, it’s important to check the fit in front of a mirror once or twice a year to ensure your bra is not too big or too small. "Even as little as a 5-pound weight loss or gain can change your bra size to some degree," explains Luciani.
