HOKA may be known for their chunky, high-cushion sneakers meant for running and walking — but that's about to change. The popular athletic shoe brand just expanded its repertoire and released what might be the most controversial shoe of the year: the Speed Loafer.

Our editors and Good Housekeeping Institute experts love HOKA for its best-in-class cushioning and thick, supportive soles — in fact, the brand consistently earns top spots in our sneaker tests.

That includes styles like the Bondi walking shoe and the runner-adored Clifton. However, this latest launch stirred up some mixed feelings. It combines the sleek silhouette of a classic loafer with the instantly recognizable stacked, rocker-shaped soles of HOKA's running and walking styles.

Retailing for $185, the Speed Loafer has a leather and suede upper, a slip-on fit, and is complete with an irreverent tassel. Now the lower half is where things get interesting: the sole of these hybrid kicks offer a high-traction grip. That's because it features the same tread as HOKA's popular Speedgoat 5 trail sneaker, Vibram outsole and all.

We're also spotting ample cushioning from heel to toe, neutral support in the arches and a subtle rocker shape that'll help propel you forward with every step. In other words, you're getting the look of a classy leather shoe, paired with the cushion and technical grip of your favorite hiking shoes.

Our editors can't stop fighting about these controversial — yet likely comfortable — kicks. Since loafers and boat shoes are expected to be a growing trend in 2025, we totally see the appeal. One editor described the new Speed Loafer as "Frankenshoes," while a few others agreed that they loved the unconventional silhouette. And since HOKA's shoes are particularly great for people with joint pain, we think these office-ready shoes might be the perfect solution for shoppers who want a little extra cushion in their step when trainers aren't the memo.

Wherever you land on the great Frankenshoe debate, one thing is for sure: these kicks are pretty much guaranteed to sell out fast (it launched today, January 31). If want to be one of the first to try out the unconventional style, shop the style ASAP before it's out of stock.
