Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the Scissors Project at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty's call...

Kiri's friend Kanako gives a present to one of the members of the Scissors Project. Her act of kindness is interpreted as a bribe to get a makeover, and they reject her out of hand for being too ugly. Kiri decides to help Kanako and give the boys a lesson in what true beauty is.

What a cute manga! I devoured this in just a few hours today on my way to college; I was giggling on the bus like a middle-schooler.

Meet Kiri-chan, an undercover hair beautician. She doesn't make a big deal about her "magic" hands, she merely helps girls who feel "ugly" within an hour. She's a very chill main character -- always tired, but always kind... unless you're one of the three boys at school in the Scissors Project. These boys handpick beautiful girls with shoulder-length hair for a makeover.

The main character in the S.P. is Narumi; let me tell you, he's a class A asshole... but a tolerable one. I got a real kick out of him: so boastful, so arrogant, so dramatic. Usually I'd drop a novel when the male MC becomes insufferable with his douche-y-ness, but I couldn't put this manga down simply because I couldn't wait for "Mysterious X" to put Narumi's scissors where his mouth is in the Cultural Festival. Only problem: there was a cliffhanger, ugh! I'm angry.

***This manga is by all means predictable, but it's still a light and fun read nonetheless.***

BTW, I really liked Kei from the S.P., he was funny. I can relate to him with his love of food.

I loved this series from start to finish. The heroine is confident and clever, the side characters are charming and largely realized. What I found most impressive about Beauty Pop is how it takes a subject I have ZERO interest in (the adventures and competitions in the beautician field) and makes it unexpectedly interesting. Full of fun and good humor. The lack of romance is startling though and pretty unfortunate toward the end when the characters have been developed so well and have marked chemistry that isn't explored. That is kind of what helped the characters grow though- not being hampered by the patterns of romantic entanglements in some of the more romantic shoujo manga out there.

I'm rereading the series for the one millionth time and I still fangirl over it. It always hits me right in the kokoro. Mah girl is such a powerful child itz insane. Like, she be a better male lead than the male lead.

VIDEO SERIES REVIEW: https://youtu.be/ofD5iW0yxLk

Very strong first volume! Kiri is such a great heroine and is very different from other manga heroines I’ve read. Narumi I realize is VERY competitive, but he can be mean and leaves MUCH to be desired until he has his own kind of “beautification” process. Though he needs an internal one for sure!

The ending had me turning pages so fast and so relieved I had the second volume on hand!

Good story and really like the messages of this one!

Read this series many MANY years ago and just saw them at my library.

Time for a trip down memory lane!

Wow. Forgot how quick these were to read! Just as I remembered it. It's a nice break from all those others that focus on the romantic sides of stories - and you get to learn about beautician techniques so an extra plus😁

Gah, I read this as a teen but never finished it! Rereading this 10 years-ish later is so nostalgic and is hitting all the right spots. (I hope this gets me out of my book slump.)

I have to say this is the best comic I have read so far. This serie is about beauty making incomplete ugly into butterflies. Once he fixes you,he makes the person you like fall in love with you, but someone else is doing beauty projects too and everyone in on school wants to know who is this person, I mean she goes to their school. In the end X and the boy have a beauty project hairstyliest competitition, adn in the end someone wins but you have to read volume 2 to know who won!

This has been on my "To Read" list for a very very long time and finally, I unleashed it today cause goddamn, my manga has been in drought lately lol! This manga was legit long winded for 51ish chapters but I friggin was entertained by the main characters such as Kiri's stoic attitude, along with Narumi's stupid over the top attitude. What I'm saying is that are likeable characters.

Seriously tho, this manga is making me want to get a haircut again and yet I've only gotten it done a week ago lol. It was nice to read something different that revolved around hairdressing for a change. There's also not much serious romance in this but listen , if you don't mind the old skool art and just only want the comedy side of things than romance, this one is for you folks!

Okay, that was just the cutest thing that ever cuted! Kiri is a really likable character, and I enjoy her blasé sense of self. She is someone with a very strong understanding of who she is, and she seems extremely passionate about her talents as a stylist. Though, what makes her more interesting, I think, is her apparent reluctance to pursue the field.

Narumi, the spoiled unlikable, probable main male lead, puts an interesting juxtaposition against Kiri. The dude's a flat out douche-pot, but he's more amusingly self-absorbed rather than just flat out dislikable. This works in the favor of the story, though, because Kiri is so not afraid to call this ass on his shit.

Then there's the adorable and lolita-like character, the exuberant Kei, and the brains behind the group, Ochiai. Basically they are all of the cute and just OH MY GOD YES.

I'm really intrigued by the story of this series, and I REALLY love the fresh, lively art style of Beauty Pop. Here's to hoping I just found my next favorite Shoujo manga series!

When I first read this book I thought that is was totally shallow and stupid. I was COMPLETELY off! I ended up buying all ten of the books and reading them three times! You get really attached to all of the characters and the author is really funny! The plot may sound really shallow, but it is actually not nearly as shallow as you predicted. The story gets more in interesting and hooks you on like a fish on a line. Please, don't stop at the first volume; decided that you hate it after you have read the second volume because you could be wrong.

I really like this manga from elementary school. The protagonist girl is cool and the boy has a confidence in himself but he is coward for love. They are so cute and both has a dream to become a beautician. They have a setback and it shows detailed about psychological description so I like this storyline well. If you have interested I recommend you to read in break time!

This was great. I wasn't expecting it to end on a cliffhanger though so if you read this, have book 2 close by unlike me. I think Kiri was a great female lead.

I recently reread the first three volumes of this series, and even though it's just as predictable as I remembered it, I enjoyed it just as thoroughly the second time around.

A popular boys clique called "The Scissors Project" has gained almost a rock star following at their school for their surprise makeovers on hand-picked subjects. The happy-go-lucky (and somewhat immature) Kei Minami specializes in nails, Kazuhiko Ochiai specializes in cosmetics and overall beauty, and Shogo Narumi is the self-proclaimed hair "Genius"--but when Scissor Project rejects start popping up with shockingly gorgeous hair transformations it becomes clear a new makeover wizard is in town, much to Narumi's ire and Ochiai's curiosity. Kiri Koshiba is that upstart on the scene, and she is a complete mystery. Daughter of a salon owner with a uncanny knack for cutting hair, she appears to have absolutely no ambition and no interest in her work outside of closet Good Samaritan instincts. Will the Scissors Project recruit the new talent or will Narumi's temper implode the SP before they can convince her?

Although Shogo (Narumi) seems to fall pretty predictably into type as the classic hotheaded top-blowing character, he's not entirely one-note, and the little bits of backstory we get on both him and Ochiai in the first few volumes are pretty interesting and revealing. Kiri is actually pretty refreshing as a heroine in that she is completely true to herself and her own motivations and is not concerned about male--or peer--approval or influence. A far cry from the passive damsel-in-distress that crops up so often in Shoujo stories. She's not exactly likeable, because her personality is too closed-off to really invite that sort of thing, but you can respect her. Her dry seriousness also serves as a good counterbalance for the giddiness left in the wake of the Scissors Club projects and leaves a great opening for further discoveries and development as the series progresses.

My only real quibble in the first few volumes lies with the treatment of one of the makeover subjects. Major fat-shaming and given the fact that her personality is basically buffoon-ified, it feels especially mean. Truth be told though, the SP team throws more shade than a typical America's Next Top Model episode, so all of their rejects get served up something....at least in this series, underdogs always get their redemption.

Well after intense February, I’m having a small shoujo showdown. Basically, I mostly review shoujo, but during December (that’s when this review is written) I was craving something totally moe and was rereading some of the “romance” shoujo’s that I hadn’t reviewed yet. So let me start from the very beginning.

This story is a let down in a romance department, especially in the main couple. I wanted to see more, it was expected that Ki-chan will end up with Naru, but I didn’t really get to see it. Don’t get me wrong, they do and they have two adorkable kids together, but there was only an awkward kiss and nothing else. Ki-chan never got over her aloofness and I loved her character for that, but still I wanted her to show a bit more emotions. But I guess I’m making absolutely no sense, as I haven’t even told you what the story is all about! Have you ever wondered how some hairdressers become famous and some work in third-rate beauty salons? Here’s your chance to get an inside on the world of hair-stylists. Our male protagonists – Naru, Yoichi and Kei are part of Scissors Project. They transform plain girls into beauties! And Naru is a self-proclaimed genius. However, everything changes, when there appears mysterious hair beautician, who is always better than Naru.

Will those two become rivals or will they start working together to face formidable enemies? And trust me there will be quite a lot of them! Are you ready to dive into a world full of fun, action and cute hairstyles? I actually took some of mine from there. Get to know the hilarious characters and fantastically aloof Ki-chan. She really inspired one of the characters of my story. Enjoy it to its fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as your thoughts below! Summary:
Kiri Koshiba uses her magnificent hairstyling talents to help brighten up the lives of girls, but she does so anonymously. On the other hand, Scissors Project, "SP", an egoistic but noteworthy group made up of three boys at school, gives grand makeovers to handpicked girls. Shougo Narumi, the head of the group and a hairstyling genius in his own right, finds himself butting heads with Kiri. To make matters worse, Ochiai, another member of SP, plots to expose Kiri's talents. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the spotlight, she finds herself drawn into the world of hairstyling. Aside of all the chaos, Ochiai develops a special affection for Kiri. But it seems Narumi and Kiri are also developing feelings for each other.

My Opinion:
I would have to say this book is in my top 5 favorites it's possibly one of the best I have read. I love the art, comedy, romance, hair cutting, and practically just everything about it. Its a really good book and well god I'm buying the volumes right now I only have 8-10. One can only buy so much at a time lol. Well this book is really good for those who love comedy/romance type genres. I personally love alot of different genres as long as it has comedy :]. Anyway you should take the time to read it and I give it a 5 out of 5.

This manga is about a girl named Kiri, who has a talent for cutting hair but she doesn't like to cut hair. Kiri is going against Narumi in a hairstyle battle. So basically you have to make the girl that is chosen beautiful in a ceartin amount of time. So let the battle begin and start the manga. I loved this book because it had an interesting layout. The author Kiyoko Arai makes this book funny, enjoyable, and "magical". I loved when Kiri made the other girls beautiful even though she wasn't part of the "scissors project". What she did seem magical and she also did a lot of slide-cuts on "heads" and got 10,000 yen! That is truely amazing. Narumi is a selfish guy who doesn't cut hair for "ugly" people but Kiri is just the opposite so I guess they are like rivals. Kiri is kind of lazy in a way because she is always like "yea yea whatever". She doesn't like going to see the scissors proect perform. Narumi is kind of narcissitic because he always think he looks the best and he is so boostful. Narumi is also really harsh on some girls( the ones he think that they look like trash). I would reconmend this book to everyone.

"Kau mau kuberikan sihir?"

kalimat itulah yang selalu diucapkan Koshiba Kiri setiap kali menawarkan diri untuk menata rambut seseorang. Kiri hanyalah gadis biasa.

This is a great manga overall, I would recommend this for people who are interested in manga or graphic novels. The main character Kiri Koshiba is a very talented hairstylist, but her appearance gives the opposite idea, she has a relaxed demeanor, doesn't feel the need to get involved with the popular hairstylists at her school, and doesn't necessarily have aspirations. She uses her "magic" to give people who are usually rejected, bullied, or have low self-esteem a new image. The "Sp" or scissors project is a non-official club including a talented hairstylist narumi who is the son of a famous hairdresser, Kei who is a lazy but extraordinary nail stylist, and Ochiai who is a very stiff cold student who didn't have friends but is a great makeup artist. The other girls in the school are obsessed with the Scissors Project, even Kiri's friends but Kiri doesn't pay attention to the scissors project even though she has more than enough talent to join. Overall Kiri doesn't seem to be a hairstylist for the fame and money, but to give other people the confidence they need. This manga is a school life, shoujo (romance), comedy. It is very lighthearted and is overall a very entertaining book to read.

The first book to an awesome series, at least in my opinion being a manga fan and going to school to become a cosmetologist myself.
WARNING: SPOILERS
The manga focuses on the life of a naturally gifted hairstylist named Kiri Koshiba, and her problems with the "Scissors Project," a group of boys determined to become the best makeover team in Japan. Kiri Koshiba uses her hairstyling talents to help brighten up the lives of girls, but she does so anonymously. Unlike the Scissors Project who gives grand makeovers to already-beautiful handpicked girls.

All in all great illustrations and cute plotline, I loved it.

I read this manga years ago, back then I was just a middle school student. I remember going to the bookstore and rent it afterschool. Yeah back then reading manga online hadn't been popular and I didn't have money to afford buying mangas so the only choice left was renting mangas. There used to be many book rental shops.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to shoujo mangas because many of them are terrible and annoying but I can say this is one of my favorite. I like the concept and can't help but love all of the characters in the series. They're all weirdos and so fun to read. Anh when reading a shoujo manga, I don't usually like both the hero and heroin because of well, thousand reasons but Kiri and Narumi are an exception. They're such a hilarious and unlikely couple!

And I really like the art style of Beauty Pop, fresh and lively and different from other shoujo mangas.

I read the entire series, and I loved it. This was my first manga series, and I was a little on the fence about reading it. But, I had been on a good-book drought, and had turned to a friend to recommend books to me that she liked. Specifically, manga. I was interested in trying it, and she was more than happy to point out her favorites. I wasn't going to read it at first, but reluctantly decided to pick it up. After reading the first couple of pages, I was completely glued. These kinds of things, about beauty and makeup, never normally interest me. I'm still a little surprised that it did. Kiyoko Arai created relatable and grin-inducing characters. I gave this a 4/5 due to the fact that the book slows slightly, but luckily picks up quickly again.

The main reason that this manga even showed up on my radar is due to the 2019 Popsugar Reading Challenge. I chose it as my book for the, "A book with "pop", "sugar" or "challenge" in the title" category. It is not the type of story that I would normally read, which is one of the things I enjoy about the challenge.

I enjoyed the book far more than I expected to. In my opinion the situations were over dramatized but I think that helped to enhance the likability of the story for me. The personality of the main character Kiri is great. I love the way she is nonchalant about her abilities in contrast to the egomaniacal Narumi. Kiri is often times helping others with her ability as a beautician, proving that not all heroes wear capes.

Since this is a manga series I've read many times before, i already know what happens. But so far in the first book, Ochai realizes who 'X's real identity is and sets her up in a haircut battle against the leader of Scissors Project, Naru Naru. Just by having helped two people who Naru Naru refused to make beautiful, Naru Naru challenged who he thought was a boy to compete with their haircutting skills. Though Ochai-Sempai knows the true identity and buttons to push to activate Kiri's magical skills, nearly the rest of the whole school can't tell who 'X's real identity is. Will they soon find out or will X's true identity remain a mystery? Read the next book and find out!~

This is a really cute manga. You really have to suspend all reality to go along with the idea that there is a school in japan where everyone is obsessed with hairdressing (and isn't a beauty school), but it's really good fun. There are a lot of trope characters - the smart boss guy, the irratic beautiful guy, the cute guy who acts really young, the disinterested female lead - but they're harmless fun, and I'm particularly looking forward to seeing more of Kiri.

I would say that this series is more for young teenagers, but after the manga series I just read, I need something really light and fun to read!

Re-read: first read 2011.

Beauty Pop was something I really enjoyed in high school but never got around to actually collecting the entire series. That changes now! I think what I love most about it is how unique the main character, Kiri Koshiba, is compared to a lot of shojo. Typical shojo female protagonist is hot-headed, temperamental, very emotional. Kiri is quite the opposite, she is cool, mellow, and apathetic. Very rarely does she get ruffled, much to the chagrin of her romantic lead, Narumi--who has all the typical attributes of a shojo protagonist girl! Passionate, emotional, easily set off--I love Narumi so much and this is such a fun manga.
