The Viking Who Fell Through Time

Rate this book
They were born three thousand years apart, but fate brought them together.

Dragged into the ancient past by a crashing spaceship, Tor and his fellow Vikings face starvation in an autumn that is six months too early. Then they meet the mysterious Kiana, and the villagers whose winter shelter has been destroyed by the spaceship.

Uneasy allies at first, these two leaders find unexpected love as they join forces to build a home together, until Kiana’s enemies threaten her new life.

A unique twist on time travel, adventure, and romance. This story is very well written and has a unique take on time travel. A spaceship from the future catapults a Viking ship back 3,000 years from their time. I recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

The results of the people on the Viking ship and the people who are living in the area where the ships land and the spaceship crashes are portrayed well. Only one person has the ability to understand the language spoken by the Vikings. This woman and the boy with her are not from the area but have been given the right to live with this clan.

Kiana is a warrior and has trained the women in the encampment to defend themselves. She and the boy are not who they pretend to be. Always looking over her shoulder to see if the traitor that killed her family and royalty has followed.

Tor was exiled by the person who killed his father, their chieftain, and raped his sister. Family and friends came with them on the ships. They left in the spring but ended up in the autumn season when the spaceship took them through time. Being hunters, they could get lots of meat but they needed more than that to survive.

The two clans work together to survive the winter. The Vikings build a longhouse that will hold all of them and exchange food for shelter needed to survive the harsh winter.

Kiana and Tor are in constant contact with each other and together they deal with their pasts, present, and future. Tor is an alpha male who protects all females. Kiana is a trained warrior who protected royalty but was betrayed by her lover. She vowed never to love again. When the traitor tracks her down and tries to take her and the boy back (the boy being the rightful heir to the throne) so the traitor can sit on the throne, Tor lets Kiana use her skills to defend herself and kill the traitor but is there in case she needs help.

Kiana has to come to terms with her past and realizes Tor is her future. But can she recover from what her past lover and traitor did to her family?

Not my normal cup of tea, but enjoyable.

After a new jarl bested his father in combat and ravished his sister, Tor and his warriors are going into exile, bringing Runa along so she can raise the child properly. They face a strange storm, and upon cursing the gods, their crew are sent back in time about 3000 years after being exposed to a crashing spaceship. They realize that the seasons have changed and something strange happened, but quickly befriend the inhabitants of the land they are near.

Kiana is a warrior from the distant southlands, having fled with a child she calls her son to live in a cold, northern climate as opposed to her desert homeland. She is training the locals to fight, and is gifted with tongues, and is able to speak to the viking strangers encroaching on their territories.

This is not a real science fiction novel although it takes aspects of it. It takes a small group, flings them backwards in time, and though they do approach the spaceship that's since crash landed, neither group of people can really do much with it. It remains a threat but no real explanation is given as to what's going on. I say 'not a real science fiction novel' because this book reads like a historical novel. The author emphasizes on how these different groups of people live, and the threat facing all of them is starvation and freezing. We learn Kiana's real name and how her people lived, and if you were to ask me even though the title implies Tor's the main character, it seems to me the actual main character is Kiana, but it's at least a two-parter story and it's not like Tor's loafing about.

As said, this isn't my normal cup of tea but it was a decent enough story. The author pays attention to details and interpersonal conflict, and everything here is (mostly) believable (spaceships and why princes don't send lackeys aside) for those who are interested in viking history know that there's evidence that the tried to colonize parts of the Americas, but likely couldn't because they didn't befriend the locals. I'm not that familiar with many specific cultures of the bronze age, but when it came to bronze swords versus probably even a very simple steel weapon, I didn't doubt certain fights went a certain way.

I think if you want to get your feet wet in science fiction and fantasy but are scared of getting bogged down by giant casts or a lot of complicated lore, this is a decent foray into the genre. It's character-driven and brings to life a very small part of our history.

Exiled Viking Tor cursed the gods. The gods were evidently not amused. So Tor and his companions end up in a terrible storm and only survive thanks to a literal deus ex machina--an out of control space ship which mysteriously plunges their longships 3000 years into the past, and right into all kinds of trouble.

Without going into a lot of detail (i.e. no spoilers) I'll simply say that Ms Castell has done her research, and crafted a believable and well paced time-travel tale that manages to incorporate the sexy Vikings (as promised), alien technology, and a Bronze-Age warrior woman with all kinds of issues of her own. And it all turns out to be great fun. The arrogant and (unsurprisingly) suspicious Tor is revealed to have a sense of humor and heart (much to his own surprise). The equally suspicious Kiana (the aforementioned warrior woman), has secrets upon secrets, and a jaundiced view of the intruding Vikings. Top-notch enemies to lovers play here, and Ms. Castell makes the most of her characters and their wary dance. This is a very character-driven story (my favorite type) with believable stakes and motivations. The mark of a good tale--I'm pretty darned impatient to find out what happens next, and heartily encourage this author to get busy with the next installment, in order to satisfy my rampant curiosity.

Absolutely love this book, I read it as soon as I got it after meeting the wonderful and sweet author of this book, as I’m not typically a fan of time, travel books this turned my whole opinion around and I can see myself reading others like this! I am excited to read her book which comes out in October. (Fingers crossed) such a good book. I highly recommend reading this!! Five stars all the way, for the wonderful way it’s written and the whole story line. I was just shocked on how hooked I was because again I was a tad bit skeptical on enjoying it due to the time travel part. But it was AMAZING ! Also the book cover?? Wow. Love it. Definitely can see myself reading this again.

I was way out of my comfort zone reading this. It is about the farthest you could get from my normal diet of police procedurals and crime stories with the odd biography thrown in.
With a sense of obligation to the author, I opened this scifi historical romance and, to my surprise, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Maureen Castell is a skilled wordsmith but beyond putting pretty words on paper, she excels in her research.
I look forward to more of Maureen's works. The included preview of Beneath the Destiny Stone looks fascinating.
