Evangelina: I lived my life surrounded by luxuries, love, and attention. While at the mercy of lies, death, and deceit. I was tired of being just a pretty face. The woman who always had to prove her worth. When tragedy tears yet another gash in my heart, he was there to help mend my grief. But there was a mystery hidden behind those alluring diamond eyes. A whisper of ghosts and trauma from his past. Red flags I knew I shouldn’t ignore. Yet I couldn’t help the feelings blossoming within me or the fire that scorched my skin under his touch. Derek Cain held promises of love and protection. But what if he was who I needed saving from?
Derek: As a child, I knew nothing but hate and pain. I was a soulless, unlovable bastard bred into a killer. Bound by blood to the world’s most obscure and elite society of global puppeteers. For years, I fantasized about taking revenge on the man who’d abandoned me. And when his time finally came, that’s when I saw her . His weakness. Detective Evangelina Cruz was mine to taint, use, and ruin. Until the lines of vengeance and obsession blurred. And she consumed my every thought. Though my secrets would destroy her, I’d bathe the world in blood before letting her go. Would the love we forged in darkness prevail in the light of truth?
this book was amazing!! if i’m being honest i would have never guessed this was a debut novel, elle is insanely talented. the writing was wonderful, and this novel captures every aspect of not only a beautiful romance (with lots of spice mixed in), but an action-packed storyline as well!
our main characters, derek and eva, are both badass in every way possible. derek is a tattooed “bad boy” with a rough past filled with secrets and lies, and eva is a police detective who catches the eyes of many people, and sometimes blurs the rules when it comes to someone she loves and trusts. these two are so wonderful together and compliment one another really well, definitely two very well written characters :)
this book is definitely a rollercoaster of different emotions! there’s so much tension between derek and eva even from the moment they meet, and things continue to develop as the story progresses. i absolutely loved all of the fun jokes they would throw at one another throughout the book.
this is so worth the read! especially if you love dark romance/mafia romance type books. i will say, i’ve never read a dark romance before, but i will for sure be reading anything else elle writes in the future. definitely an author i will be supporting now and moving forward!
wrapping things up, i just wanna say a huge thank you to elle for trusting us with her debut novel <3 and a huge thank you to the amazing arc team that i’m so lucky to be a part of. i can’t wait to read book 2 in november!!
Wow!! I still can’t get over the fact that this is Elle’s debut novel! This book had me hooked from the very first chapter. Derek Cain is one of my new mafia DADDIES & redefined “I’ll burn the world down for you”. 😈😈😈
Derek grew up in foster care & was raised by a criminal father that trained him to be the savage he is. He had always seeked revenge on his wealthy birth father, who abandoned him & never looked back. He didn’t plan on his father’s beautiful goddaughter to be there the night he planned his death. His obsession begins & he won’t stop until Eva’s his. 🫦
The CHEMISTRY between Derek & Eva, the banter, the PLOT & TWISTS!! Just amazing! I will say it was a little bit of a slow burn, the spice doesn’t hit till about 50% but when it hits 🥵🥵

“I’d bathe the whole goddamn world in blood for you.”
“Remember who you belong to.”
“You and I would be so damn good together.”
Thank you to Elle for an ARC in exchange for my honest review! 🖤
The heroine Eva was painfully dumb. She was supposed to be a smart detective but alas no! She blindly trusted the hero.
The hero's father said this, “You’re so hung up on my son’s cock that you refuse to see the truth.” And I completely agree with him.
The hero Derek also had no personality and vibes. He was meh!
Derek also said this when he went into the meeting and Eva was at home waiting for him prolly,
"Amalia was an extraordinarily beautiful woman. Two months ago, I would have indulged in her company, but there was only one woman whose touch I craved." (Amalia is some other woman).
These two stars are for last few chapters which were kind of good. Also it's not a dark romance
Was hoping the reviews were wrong... but this is not a good book.
Pacing is way too slow and the plot is non-existent. Neither MMC or FMC were interesting enough to keep my attention, and for a dark romance... SNOREEEE.
Disappointed as its been sitting on my physical TBR for quite a while.
I absolutely devoured this book!! Derek and Evangelina have so much chemistry and their desire for one another made it....wow! I mean, who doesn't love a protective, filthy mouthed, "I'd burn the world for you" MMC 🥵. I'd definitely recommend this book to anybody who loves dark romance/mafia romance (pls read the trigger warnings) and enjoy the ride! I can't wait for book 2 to be released!
Stars -3.5 Themes - Different sides of the law, diabetes representation, revenge Format - Audiobook
If you like possessive fictional men and resilient fictional women, then you will enjoy this. The FMC has diabetes and I feel like this is the first time I have read this in a book, so I liked the representation. Whilst the FMC is a detective, she appears to be colour blind in this book, as she completely misses all the red flags he is throwing at her and is then surprised when she realises he is actually apart of the crime world. But I guess they say love is blind.
When working out the rating I would select on good reads as there is no half selection, I have chosen 4 stars as this is closer to a 4 star than it is to a 3 star.
💌𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒊𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆: • dark romance • cop/criminal • possessive MMC • dual POV • touch her and die • praise kinks • morally gray
#1 - This mafia romance had such a unique twist with Eva, the female lead, being a detective who falls for Derek, a guy with mafia connections. The story was packed with action and steamy scenes, and I really enjoyed how the author crafted those intense moments between the characters.
#2 - One thing that stood out was how Eva's serious medical condition was integrated into the story, making her character more relatable. However, I did find some parts a bit repetitive, especially with Derek's possessiveness and his constant use of the word "mine." It added to his character, but it did get a bit overwhelming after a while.
#3 - Another aspect that caught my attention was Eva's character development. While she's portrayed as a tough detective, there were moments where she seemed to rely heavily on Derek for protection, which felt a bit inconsistent.
💌𝒇𝒂𝒗 𝑸𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔: - “She was singing, calling to me, drawing me in like a goddamn Siren, leading me to ruin.” - “I’d give you the whole world. Just ask, and it’s yours.”
Tropes: Dark romance Mafia romance Touch her and you die Detective/criminal
Huge congratulations and all the applause for this being Elle's debut novel! What an absolute BANGER!
Eva (FMC) is a total badass. She is a homicide detective. Meanwhile, Derek (MMC) was raised by a criminal father-figure to do whatever he wants while seeking revenge against his birth father.
Derek finds out that Eva is his father's goddaughter and that is where his obsession begins.
The first half of the book is a little bit of a slow burn but I felt like that was ok because Elle was laying out the story and plot and saving the steamy scenes for later and let me tell you, the wait was worth it. ;)
I really liked the characters and the plot and speaking of plots.. THE PLOT TWISTS WERE AMAZING!
“I’d bathe the whole goddamn world in blood for you.”
I have been anticipating this book for months now! I’m so happy I was finally able to read it. I was blown away by the spice and the plot. I love that both worked together and tied into the story nicely. You didn’t get all spice without plot or vise-versa. Derek makes it easy to fall in love with him and so does Eva. They’re bond hit right from the start. Maybe I missed it while reading, but I’m super curious to what affairs Eva’s god father/Derek’s bio father did. Over all this was a fantastic debut for Elle. I can’t wait to read more books from her. I will be purchasing a physical copy at some point to add on my shelf of top reads!!
“Nothing and no one else matters to me. I'd bathe the whole goddamn world in blood for you.”
This follows Derek and Eva. Eva believes she knows everything that goes on around her. She is a fiery detective chasing a flakey lead she feels responsible for but starts to unravel the secrets and lies of those who are close to her.
I discovered this was Elle’s debut novel and I enjoyed it. The audiobook narration for this book is great as well being dual narration. I love Janine's work and discovering Bryant he was the perfect Derek. These two characters collided and I loved their tension between one another. The spicy scenes were perfection and had me weak. It's giving Instalove which I'm not a huge fan of but didn't mind in this. The FMC Eva deals with a medical condition, was feisty, and strong but also had a vulnerable side and would get emotional as well. The MMC Derek is a serial unaliver and part of the criminal underworld and has a mouth on him. I will say for a debut novel I'm impressed and do want to mention a couple of things I wish were expanded on. First off Eva is a detective. I felt it was being mentioned but it didn't feel it was explored enough. The plot overall I could picture what was going on but with the amount of characters bought in I had to keep reminding myself who they were and what side they were on. I felt at times I would lose where we were going with the plot like a disconnect. Just felt it was a little loose. Overall for a debut novel, I'm happy and enjoyed the audiobook and read along on my Kindle.

Another day another fail Sigh What a waste of such good names
The premise of this book was so interesting but that's all was good bout this book and nthin else The author tried sooooo hard to create a badass fmc and made her a cop like how r u gonna be a cop and fall into the lies of a criminal when he's giving major creepy vibes that even a teenage girl wouldve ran away from lmaooo
Derek our mmc decided that eva the fmc would be his for a very very dumb reason but nvm that and then he became obsessed w her. 50 pages into the book and he's already being like no one touches u but me. And what does our fmc, who's a cop need I remind u does? She gets wet.
A full blown cop who's always talking about how she was harassed by men cuz she's just sooo gorgeous omg *insert eyeroll* is suddenly okay with a man doing all this cuz he's hot? And she is 26. Like how r u gonna be 26 and be naive lmaoooo.
I am just done with all of these authors trying to include as many as tropes as possible in a book that it just become so cringy and u have to physically step away from the book. I am okay with a book being less tropey if the storyline is wellwritten and actually makes sense.
I shouldn't have been expecting sm from a debut novel ig but whatever its also on me cuz I didn't read the summary properly so I just glossed over the whole cop thingy and I hate cop romances. So maybe I am the problem over here but nvm
The plot twists start from the beginning! Eva and Derek com from total opposite sides, or so she thinks. Eva is a Detective while Derek is a Criminal, who has no intentions of stopping. The tension and the secrets Derek is keeping from Eva, he knew it was bound to end. Eva is a strong FMC who knows how to handle herself and has a thing for hitting men’s dicks and I love it😂😂 The secrets that came out had me gasping, I didn’t see it coming. Well actually I did but I didn’t want it to be true 😫 He is absolutely obsessed with her and would burn the whole world down if anyone even looked at her. I’m here for all of it, I can’t wait to dive into book 2
I fell in love with the MMC brother. He isn’t the star of this book, but he makes me want to read the second book very much. The opening chapter is just wow! I could not put the book down for the first 40-50%. Though after some time the characters became predictable and inconsistent. There is a lot going on and I think the author did a good job of tying things up! (Just felt rushed on some parts) Overall a good book if you’re wanting a medium dark/mafia romance with condensed and raunchy spice.
Soo let me put this out this was bloody fucking great a master piece and i got hooked from first chapter Derek will forever own me This was all kind of good the slow burn the tension from dark romance girlies this is home . All the unhingness and possessiveness one can expect in the best way is all here . The way derek doted on Eva was just swoon worthy’s making a girl wish fictional men where real .
And Talk about Eva that woman is le petite badass . This is definitely one of my favorite Mafia romance
Derek is so hot sexy. Psychotic, but hot sexy. And this man can grovel and we know how much I love that.
Anyways, one thing that really stood out that I absolutely loooved was how well this author could write in both POVs. Usually an author is ok at it, but here?! Idk man it just hit different. And this man was so down bad for Eva I was kicking my feet every which way. I also loved how the FMC was this baddie detective. She could hold her own and she DID. She was a little bit naive and clueless, but that’s mostly bc bestie is way too trusting, so what can you do. But besides that, what a power couple. Can’t believe that this is this author’s first book and the second come comes out in like 4 days 🤭
xoxo Love when men are on their knees begging for forgiveness 🫡🫣
Derek mother-fkn Cain, y’all. The way he says he’ll burn the whole world for Eva? Yeah, I melted. The whole time I was reading this, I contemplated taking a cold shower. Gods, it was spicy! This book was just filthy and I loved every second of it.
I’m not going to spoil a thing though, so this review will be relatively short. It’s 100% worth the read! Get your copy on Amazon or Kindle Unlimited on July 14th!
I think my only hang up was that there wasn’t much back story into the nine families and Derek and Eva’s past. Over all, it was so good and I can’t wait for next one!
Elle, I’m so grateful to be a part of your ARC team. Thank you for letting me read your book. I know release day is going to be spectacular for you!
ARC Review Book: Severed by Vengeance Author: Elle Maldonado Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I really enjoyed this story! He’s an un-aliver and she’s a cop. What do they even have in common? Well his father is her godfather. When her godfather comes up dead why did his long lost son just show up?
This book had everything including a strong badass woman, a strong man, heat, passion, and a lot of steam. I really enjoyed all the emotions we got from the characters.
I got the ALC from Blue Nose Audio. This was the first time I have ever read anything from this author, but I really enjoyed it! Janine Grands was wonderful per usual. I really enjoyed her emotions through the whole audio. This is the first time I’ve listened to Bryant Walker, but I really enjoyed him as well.
This was a weird, watered down, and poorly done combination of The Cat & Mouse Duet (Dark Romance - check TW) and literally any of Sophie Larks books (specifically her Mafia romance ones). I say that as a fan of both of those authors and am slightly cringing that I have to use them to draw comparison to this, but I can’t think of anything better. Can definitely tell where this author gets inspiration from.
For context: I got this book as the November read for the probably smut book club, and if next month’s is as bad as this one I will be canceling my subscription because no. Absolutely not.
I flew through this, but honestly should have DNF’d at 25%. There were so many painful loose ends with the development of the plot. And the writing had so many holes in transitional elements. Like they are at Derek’s house, his dad shows up, he tells Eva to “go home” so he can talk to his dad and then magically arrives at Eva’s dads house (where she went) less than 2 minutes after she does? This makes no sense! Also, does this girl not work? She’s a fucking detective and the lack of accountability and development with that element of her character really hurt my attachment to the story. It just didn’t feel realistic. And WHY why why did she do so much dancing around Derek’s character. The surface level presentation of both Eva and Dereck was infuriating. Okay Derek is an orphan but you’re not giving me any actual backstory to him other than his experience in foster homes was rough and Kai is his brother in anything but blood. And with Eva she is SO full of contradictions. She has grown up with and adores this man Jack and then literally her first conversation with Derek about him she says “He was a deadbeat and a liar” yeah it’s true but girl where’s your loyalty?! The missed opportunity for development here is just a glaring example of the surface level and static characterization of Eva and Dereck. It got to the point that it was eye-rollingly laughable.
I am seeing what Maldonado was trying to do by introducing characters to weave storylines but come ON. We saw Leni for .5 seconds of this book and now I’m supposed to be so invested in her that I should be excited about reading more about her in the next book? Would’ve been a smarter move to have book 2 be about Alexa and Kai (I feel like that might actually be an interesting book, but unless the writing drastically improves it will be a hard no for me). Maldonado would do herself a favor by looking at the way authors like Sophie Lark and Ana Huang integrate storylines and characters to create a larger series arc.
All this to say, boring and definitely NOT a dark romance (probably smut book club, please make sure you sub-genre tag correctly), at most this was a mafia romance. But like even then, what mafia?! What is Ares? Why did we not get more backstory here? Who is feuding with who and why?! UGH. Like at the end Derek’s parting words to Ronan are that he is going to send incriminating crap to Zeus. Obviously Zeus is a part of the Ares mafia (maybe?! Who tf knows, bc it sure isn’t me) but I didn’t know enough about the “mafia” element to this world Maldonado created to feel invested in this weak attempt at foreshadowing for the other books in the series. Spice was the best written part of this book, but even that’s not saying much of anything.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
SUCH a good dark mafia romance. Derek and Eva were just such an amazing pair. She is strong, independent, and knows herself and her wants. Derek is flawed, violent, and also so good. I am just in love with these characters.
There is quite a lot of descriptive violence within this book. Just be warned. There are also very spicy and descriptive scenes.... that I could not get enough of. I also really appreciate that this book was not instant love. These two had to work for their love.
I received a beautiful ARC in exchange for an honest review 🥰
This book was really entertaining and definitely spicy. I felt this was a solid work by the author, and I'm genuinely surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I don't consider myself a fan of the genre, but this book has me looking forward to the next book in the series, so that says something. I may also be secretly in love with the main characters, and I can't be mad at that.
Severed by Vengeance is truly excellent and checks off all the boxes for what makes a good, dark romance novel.

OK firsts things first , this was Elles debut novel!? BACK UP! THIS WAS SO GOOD OH MY GOODNESS!
Secondly 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
🙌🙌🙌🙌DUAL POV🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Writing 10/10 Characters 10/10 Plot 10/10 Character chemistry 🚀🚀🚀
So our FMC Eva, is a detective but also a diabetic. Sidenote: Now for me I thought this was very cool to have this represented into a book. My real life partner is Type 1 so it was just kind of cool to have that in a book. I even told my partner about it and they also thought it was cool .
Who (our FMC) becomes the obsession of our MMCs, Derek
Now Derek is going to be your new criminal book daddy boyfriend OK. He's fabulous. *chefs kiss*
The chemistry these two characters have is so good. The flirting, the witty banter these two characters had me eating out of their hands with each Page. I couldn't stop reading.
And the spice , this is a slow burn but I have a little secret come closer *whispers * it's all about the builld up baby. That climax is about the journey. Remember it's a marathon not a race and *gets loudsr* WHEN THE SPICE HITS! MY GODS! Better have a glass of milk read to cool ya down because its so good.
The narrations was great. It's a dual narration and they both did a fantastic job. Both narrators were easy to listen to and very cool at portraying their characters and other characters.
What's more captivating than a man consumed by obsession? Well, a man driven by his criminal persona, concealing his identity from the detective FMC he unexpectedly encounters on his path of revenge, only to find himself falling deeply in love with her. 😝
Though I was hooked from the start, I felt like Derek's vendetta against Eva fizzled out too quickly. I think I would have preferred it if his crush on her unfolded more gradually, adding some real tension. But hey, their banter was fun, and I liked that the romance took its sweet time, despite the instant sparks.
Derek was a fascinating and damn hot character, but he needed a bit more fleshing out. I wish his past connections with Ronan, Kai, the subplot involving Aries and the other assassins and Ronan’s daughter would have been used differently to add more complexity to his character.
As for Eva, she kicked off strong, but once Derek came into play, her detective skills kinda took a backseat. 🤭 It's like she got sucked into his orbit and forgot all about her ongoing investigations (Rain and James), going completely feral in the process. 😅
Overall, while I enjoyed the story, I believe it could have benefited from further development in certain areas to fully realize its potential. I hope the remaining loose ends will be picked up in Kai’s, Helena and Athena’s books. So, all in all I still think this book deserves 4 stars.
Evangelina and Derek's tumultuous relationship takes center stage in this dark romance entwined with crime and deceit. The audiobook version, narrated by Janine Granda and Bryant Walker, truly elevates the story, with their performances adding depth and intensity to the narrative. Granda and Walker masterfully capture the characters' emotional turmoil and passionate encounters, making the listening experience incredibly immersive. Their ability to bring out the complex dynamics between Evangelina and Derek set against a backdrop of danger and secrets, makes this audiobook a compelling listen. I highly recommend it to fans of dark romance and intricate character-driven plots.
DNFing at page 267. The main character is somehow a cop but like also unable to compartmentalize her job from all of the things she’s feeling in high stress instances and it bothers me. She turns into a ball of mess and her not bf has to be the big bad guy in charge. 🤮
🥀Severed by Vegeance is Elle Maldanado’s debut novel and let me just say she has a gift! What an incredible first novel!
“She was mine. Made for me. Born to ruin me.”
🥀This one had me hooked from start to finish. It’s captivating, exciting, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the SPICE. 🥵
You have the morally grey and protective MMC with a dark past and huge secret, Mr. Derek Cain. The definition of “Burn the World for her”. You have the take no BS detective FMC, Evangelina Cruz who is trying to uncover a truth but she may hate to know once discovered. 🥀🥀Will Derek’s secrets ruin them??🥀🥀
Guess you will have to read and find out! Let’s just say, I already cannot wait for book #2! 😩❤️
5/⭐️ 4/🌶️

I absolutely enjoyed reading Severed by Vengeance. Derek is a morally grey hitman, and Eva is a badass detective who wants to see the good in everyone. Derek was obsessed with Eva from the very beginning, and he would do anything in his powers to keep her safe. This book had an amazing storyline, right amount of action, and spice.
"She was mine. Mine to keep. To worship. To love. Only mine"
