Death's Obsession

Rate this book
He’s coming for you.

Death is meant to come on a chariot of broken dreams or in the dark trenches of a storm, not in love letters and gifts.

He did not take my soul when I was meant to die. He did not want it all the other times that I’ve offered it to him on a silver platter. Yet, time and time again, he reminds me that I am his: His night monster, his dark love, his perfect other.

Death was the only thing keeping me alive. He watches me from his corner, taunts me with sweet messages, marks my body with his touch as I sleep.

He took the people that I love away from me. Still, no one believed me when I said that I saw the faceless man on the night of the accident.

No one can escape death.

Me? I’m chasing it.

From an early age, romance author Avina St. Graves spent her days imagining fantasy worlds and dreamy fictional men, which spurred on from her introverted tendencies. In all her day dreaming, there seemed to be a reoccurring theme of morally grey female characters, love interests that belong in prison, and unnecessary trauma and bloodshed.

Much to everyone's misfortune, she now spends her days in a white collar job praying to every god known to man that she might be able to write full time and give the world more red flags to froth over.

5 Lily Stars ⭐
Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

There are very few books that you just know from the first page are going to make a lasting impact on you. Where your intuition screams to you that the book you hold is really good and that something in this story is truly going to resonate with you. It's even rarer for this feeling to occur with a novella... but I swear from page 1, this book captivated and mesmerized me in the best possible way!

To say this book stomped on my heart is an understatement. It is absolutely beautiful. The descriptions and the writing just captivate you in a bubble that is raw, emotional, haunting and full of melancholy. At times the prose borders on depressing, but it is because of that lilting sadness that you are pulled into the pages. I just cannot get over how well the prose is written and the number of quotable lines this short novella contains!

There were two main things that really make this book stand out for me. Firstly, this book does deal with difficult topics as we are dealing with handling grief, mental illness and death and how each of those aspects interacts with each other and influences each other. Avina St. Graves (Zian) does this beautifully as she has shown a very real situation of grief and how a person can react, knowing that not everybody is going to react the same way to grief.

Our girl Lilith is dealing with the impact of a very traumatic event. She not only is trying to cope with the fact that she's lost her best friend, soul mate, and other half; her twin sister in a car accident. But also faces the difficulty of being wrought with survivor's guilt, as she survived the accident and her sister didn't. She's also in a very toxic relationship that doesn't work for her and isn't giving her what she needs to help her heal from this grief. And on top of that, she is being stalked by someone who is leaving her notes, gifts, and messages AND ACTUALLY invading her dreams. No one believes her stalker is real, they believe her subconscious is acting out causing hallucinations and memory loss. As a result, she is on very strong anti-psychotic medication and she is suffering financially. It feels like Lilith has had everything thrown at her with the kitchen sink and all she is doing is trying to keep afloat.

To see her struggles was heartbreaking. She doesn't have any motivation to live as nothing is keeping her here, she has suicidal ideations and thoughts and is just broken at the start. That is why this stood out so much! We are shown this broken character and then see how DEATH is actually the person who helps her overcome her grief and helps her grow. He gives her everything that she needs to slowly piece herself back together again and be whole. It's almost like he cannot claim her soul until she is whole again and so he slowly helps her through the process

I feel that anyone who has experienced grief and has gone through a similar journey of needing to pick themselves back up again after experiencing that grief will see what a fantastically well-done job this book does in describing that process.

The other aspect that I LOVED about this book is it played into the tropes and themes I ADORE!
▶ Hades and Persephone Vibes (with a relationship with Death)
▶ SUPER SEXY SHADOW DADDY
▶ Possessive and Dominating MMC who also is so caring and thoughtful
▶ Stalker Romance
▶ Love Letters
▶ Dual POV

Ultimately, I'm surprised that such a short novella could make such an impact, but I think that speaks volumes to the quality of the writing and the story and I can gladly say that Death's Obsession has become my new obsession. I loved every minute, every word, every page!

So many thanks to Avina St. Graves (Zian) for the gifted ARC!

"Even at the risk of losing it all, I would fall for her. For if I were Icarus and she were the sun, I would still fly to her with my waxen wings."

I went in for the spice and I got exactly that, so all happy.
4/5 🌶

It's easy to read and a tad shorter than I wanted it to be. Imo there was room for more answers and more development not only for Lilith but also her relationship or whatever that was with Death. I liked the smut and shadow play.

I liked the fact that this novella dealt with mental health, death and loss and trauma. In fact it's a huge part of Lilith and although the journey towards healing is not realistic at all, I liked that the portrayal of struggle was good enough.

The reason it's not a perfect read for me is the ending. I didn't like it. Like why was she THAT special that Death had to do all that?! Why put in so much effort and for that?! It not only makes no sense, it's also contradicting her healing process. I have so many questions and no answers. Which is disappointing.

I would recommend if you are looking for something quick and easy to read or if you're in the mood for some dark twisted fantasy with spice 👀 But please do check triggers, they're quite heavy 😅

"Today I watched the most otherworldly soul smile as she gazed upon a flower. Though my heart is greedy because I only want her to smile for me."

***I always try to be as objective as I can with my ratings for DARK THEMES & TRIGGER WARNINGS, SMUT TECHNICAL CONTENT/INTENSITY, SMUT QUANTITY, ROMANCE QUANTITY, ANGST LEVEL, ENEMIES-TO-LOVERSNESS; the ratings for CHARACTERS, WRITING, PLOT, SMUT QUALITY, ROMANCE QUALITY, are instead tied to my own subjective reading experience and final opinion of the book.

I'll admit I dove into this mainly because I was looking for something quick, dark and sexy to scratch off an itch, so I obviously went to the Queen of Recs (Koisty) and she suggested I'd give this one a try.
Quick? Check. Dark? Check. Sexy? Double check and then some.
It was basically perfect considering what I was looking for, but in reality, it was even better.
I came looking for a good time and didn't expect to find so much emotional depth accompanied by the most fascinating writing and a main character I related to in more was I care to admit.
And I know this is a daddy death dark romance and all, but I like to think Death being the one to save Lilith and their whole spiritual/carnal relationship is some kind of metaphor, and I couldn't be more impressed by how Avina St. Graves handled it and the heavy topics it's linked to.

St. Graves's smut is mouth-watering and the fact that there are only a couple explicit scenes and yet they managed to leave a mark, says a lot about how talented she is at making people's toes curl.

The only complain I have about this is that it was too short. I want more.

“Sometimes I don’t know if it’s better to feel nothing at all or everything.”

“You smell divine, my midnight storm.”

“You can’t grieve something you lost, when you don’t remember ever having it.”

“Does that make me as crazy as they claim? Or does it just make me human?”

“What do you want from me?”
“Everything.”

“You will bloom, my sad flower. You already have the earth; I will bring you the sun.”

“You look beautiful in your bed. But you are utterly breathtaking in mine.”

“Tell me, my love. Do you often dream of me between your legs?”

“You command me. Not just my heart—all of me.”

“I’m so sick of everyone looking at me like I’m broken.”

I sooo wanted to love this book and I’m gutted because sadly it was lacking for me.

My main issue was with the writing. Whilst it was beautiful at times (namely in Death’s letters/dialogue to Lilith) it also sometimes felt quite underwhelming or even clunky and amateurish. Some sentences didn’t even make sense.

I also think that a premise like this needs far more pages to really make an impact and this book was simply too short and undeveloped in my opinion. There was also more telling than showing.

I will say that the smut scenes were pretty good, and with a longer book we could’ve had more of them 👀

“Death comes in the darkness and light, but for him, I will come in a storm.”

What did I just read!?!? And damn this was good. The story had me hooked from the very first page. I wanted something short with fast paced but also with a good plot and spice. The whole stalking creeped me out but it also made everything more interesting. I mean think about it if someone is leaving you letters saying "You are mine and I'll come to claim you soon" but he also leaves you expensive items, makes you your favourite food and also buys you wine, and gives you cash because he knows you want it. I mean if its cash count me in 😗

“But if you ask me of my Lilith? I will tell you that she is everything. Every gust of wind, every fallen leaf, each drop of rain.”

This book served it all — plot, beautiful writing, emotional story, stalker romance, possessive MMC, spicy smut with shadows and all ❤️‍🔥👀
Was it toxic? Yes.
Did I still enjoyed it and devoured it in a day? Definitely YES.

“You have not left my mind for a single second.” He pushes his hips against mine, making me feel every inch of his hard length against my burning skin.
“I am completely at your mercy, Lilith.”

The plot revolve arounds Lilith and Death and how she hated that she escaped death when her family died but little did she knew that Death was itself coming to claim her soul for himself. The plot was a bit toxic but also a little emotional. There was healing and growth from trauma and I definitely didn't expected it from it and how it was portrayed in just a few chapters.

“You, my love, are like a storm, drowning the land with sorrow, shattering ships with your broken waves. Still, you look into the eye of the storm and see nothing but beauty.” He pulls my head to the side and dips down so his lips are against my ear. “Let me drown in your ocean and feel your rage. Let me feel your waves crash against my skin, pulling me deeper into your depths so you will never be alone again.” His thumb grazes my lip before he claims me completely with a kiss. “You are the sunrise after the storm. The new beginning and the dawn. You, my flower, are beauty personified.”

➸ Lilith was not living her life like should've. She was dead inside practically waiting for Death to take her away. But somehow she found her footing with Letum's help and also on her own and healed through trauma and grief. I liked how her progress was shown in this slowly but also steadily.

➸ Letum was toxic and super possessive but also caring and thoughtful. I liked how he never forced anything on Lilith whether its physical or emotional. He was also so hot. I mean he always had his hood on and had tattoos and shadows so 😗 His obsession with Lilith had no boundaries but after knowing how he helped her heal and was there for her everytime had me melting. Also man really got creative with his nicknames for Lilith 👀

“My Lilith. My night monster.”

“My precious little flower.”

“Tell me, my love.”

I thought that Lilith and Letum's relationship was solely based on lust, attraction and the thrill of Lilith finally meeting her stalker. He was her stalking her for months but he was also the only one who made her feel alive (even though he is dead?) and wanted and cherished and basically every emotion. Lilith was suffering a lot after losing so much but somehow Letum helped her see that there is so much she needed to heal from. Honestly as much as their realtionship was toxic it was also cute? Hot? Heartwarming? Emotional?! I guess a little bit of all of them!?

“I don’t know your favorite season, what type of music you like, what time of day you prefer, what you actually look like, your hobby, your favorite thing to eat.”
“Autumn. Classical. Right before the sun rises. You, and you.”

“You are enough, Lilith.”

The ending? Okay I did expected it and it was perfect even though it had me like WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?? Definitely worth a try if you are in mood for good smutty novella. I mean we all should read something like this just for you know eDucAtiOnaL pUrPoSes and to know how shadows work in different ways? 😗

Even the spicy parts are boring

This book is very monotonous and repetitive. Even the (very few) spicy scenes are boring. The end is rushed and we never get closure on her story. She clearly has some role when the story ends, but what is it? It's never explained so we'll never know.

Our female protagonist has exactly ZERO interesting qualities.
Our male protagonist somehow is obsessed with that.

utterly dreadful.

I cannot actually describe how awful this book is in words, but I’ll try;

170 pages and yet the same sentences and phrases were repeated all the time.

The final “awakening” / “reveal” makes absolutely 0 sense and feels like a lazy cop out.

If you want to read this for the smut then you’ll be severely disappointed as there’s only 2 sex scenes so it being marketed as a dark romance feels like a lie.

It takes 70ish pages out of 170 for the story to even get going because all the FMC does at the beginning is whine about her life and her awful boyfriend.

The writing itself is also questionable.

Looking at other reviews of this book it feels like people are trying to make it seem a lot deeper than it is, give it a overshadowing metaphor etc just to justify why they like it when really it’s very surface level dark romance with no plot.
