When Ambrose is forced to sell his horse because of an injury, he must find a new animal that can handle the rigors of the mountains while packing for his uncleís trail-riding outfit. To save an old lady's beloved companion from the meat-buyers, Ambrose buys a horse who would be better off in retirement than climbing the treacherous trails of the Rocky Mountains. The horse, Society Girl, almost dies on the trail, and Ambrose realizes she will have to go back to the meat-auction. When Ryan, a misbehaving ten-year-old, takes the horse and disappears into the teeth of a dangerous mountain storm, Ambrose and Janice are forced to work together to find him. Will the young boy and the elderly horse survive a vicious hailstorm? Will Society Girl prove that she has a future? Will Ambrose be able to save the old horse from certain death?

Tough Trails is about this girl named Ambrose and she has to take her horse Blackie to an auction and sell it because it got hurt and won’t get better. Her horse went to a meat buyer. While she was there she met a lady named Mrs. Longhurst who also had to sell her horse. While Ambrose was there she also had to get a new pack horse her and Mrs. Longhurst got to talking and it turns out her horse is 25 years old but still strong and healthy. So while Mrs. Longhurst’s horse was auctioned off Ambrose bought the old horse.I would recommend this book to people who like reading about action and adventure. And also people who enjoy horses. The author wrote this book to say that everyone should have a chance to live there life. My favorite character is Ambrose because she never gave up on anything like with Blackie or Society Girl. My least favorite character would be Ryan because he always treated people badly. The part of the book that captivated my attention was when Mrs. Longhurst had to give up her horse because she had to go to a retirement home. And she talked to Ambrose just new that Society Girl was the horse to buy. The emotions I felt were sad and joy. My two favorite lines out of the book were “The cooler air was sweet with the smell of spruce.” And “The Trail—if you could call it a trail—twisted upward between the jagged rocks. It was like a narrow playground slide.” This book kept me reading because every day something new would happen to something or someone. This book relates to me because I have also lost a beloved friend to. It is hard but you have to get over it.

A Hi-Lo book that didn't feel like a Hi-Lo book at all. Gripping story, intense drama, and horses. Can't go wrong there. I never felt like I was reading a book that was written at an easier level at all.

Fairly short, but a pretty good book. Definitely different than other books in the young adult genre, and that's always worth something!
