Hi Goodreads!
I'm Jen Calonita, a MG and YA author who loves what I do because it lets me connect with all of you (and no, I wasn't intending for that to rhyme!).

I've been writing ever since I can remember, but it was fourth grade when I put my "three wishes" for a genie down on paper. They were:
#1. Buy all the Cabbage Patch Kids in the world and give them away for free (because apparently that was how I rolled).
#2. I wanted a mansion, limo, lake house, pool and speed boat (still sounds quite nice).
#3. I wanted to be an author for young readers, which I am!

I love writing novels for teens (and for savvy grown ups who know that YA rocks at any age). My first series was "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" and it followed a teen star named Kaitlin Burke who struggled with the fame game. I have also written the stand-alone novels Sleepaway Girls, it's companion book, Summer State of Mind and the Belles series.

I've been writing middle grade too and am having so much fun with my series Fairy Tale Reform School! The fourth book in this series about a school run by former villains is called Tricked and will be out March 2018. Ever wonder what it would be like if your parents got a job with someone like Taylpr Swift? My other middle grade series, VIP, follows super fan Mackenzie Lowell as she tours with her favorite band, Perfect Storm.

I promise to give book updates here, and on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or my website. I hope I hear from you!

Kaitlin is back! She’s just finished her big movie with her career and her boyfriend still intact! Now she’s off to what she does best. Staring in the nighttime soap, Family Affair. Everything is going great! That is until newcomer Alexis starts stealing some of Kaitlin’s limelight. Is Kaitlin simply jealous or are there more forces at work

Like its two predecessors, Secrets of My Hollywood Life: Family Affairs, was a fun and fast read. These books are impeccably clean, so I wouldn’t be cautious about sharing them with younger readers. And even an older reader like me can enjoy them. I think I find these books so entertaining is because I know, when I see a People magazine on the shelf while I’m waiting in line at the local wal-mart, I can’t help but pick it up for its celeb gossip! Who wouldn’t want to be rich and famous (besides the already rich and famous). These books are an “insiders” look into the Hollywood scene! Even though Katlin isn’t a real celeb, I’m still able to get my People fix when I read these books. I also really liked the fact that Kaitlin is dealing with real like issues like getting her drivers license, studying for the SATs and worrying about her friends going off to college.

I think this series is curing me of my sometimes overboard-interest in the entertainment business (hello, People magazine and Access Hollywood-- I'm talking to you), because I had a lightbulb moment about halfway through speedreading this book:

Everything about this industry is manufactured.

In an abstract sort of way, I already knew this. But watching this fairly predictable story play out, it occurred to me how Hollywood stars, famous people, celebrities, whatever you call them, are not to be envied, but considered with empathy and admiration, almost to the point of pity.

Because if you think about, they have perks, no question about it. And yet, their entire lives are spent in an almost schizophrenic manner, divided at the very least between the persona presented (that must be maintained) in public and the reality of life that is lived in private, however much of that they have. Some people choose this lifestyle for these exact circumstances; others can't help that it comes along with their passion for the type of career (actor) that fuels the life of the industry.

Either way, the more I think about it, the softer my heart becomes towards them, and I find myself coming to the conclusion that one way to honor the difficulty they experience is to simply leave them be. I can't help but feel that they would agree.

This book is terrifically awful. Monumentally terrible. It's so bad I can barely stand to write a review of it. This is book three of the Kaitlin Burke series, and I am astonished to know there are two more after this with a sixth in the works. I just... how does this happen? The writing is poor, the story is bland and predictable, the characters are caricatures. And the outfit descriptions. WHY does Jen Calonita feel the need to illustrate each character's outfit in detail in each scene? This knowledge NEVER advances the story. It doesn't matter at all. I cannot believe Calonita's editors (yes, plural; see a problem here?) allowed her to continue that past the first book. When I started this book, I decided to count outfit descriptions. I may have missed a few when my eyes glazed over in boredom, but I counted 81. EIGHTY-ONE. How many words did that add to her total word count, I wonder?

I hate it when YA novels are written as if their teen-aged readers are stupid. Not all teens are silly, vapid and stupid, but Jen Calonita seems to think that's all they can handle. It's insulting. Forget reading the rest of this series. I'm done trying to care.

It surprises me how much I enjoy these books.

They're so well written (i.e.- good plot, characters, writing) and so FUN. I haven't read books that are just meant to be fluff and fun for a long time and so it's actually kind of nice. I enjoyed this third installment more than the second one for sure. They're very quick light reads that you can finish in little more than a sitting, which is bad when that sitting happens to be late at night! I'm very excited for the next one. I know this is a poor excuse for a review but I'm tired :(

For all those concerned the story line remains clear with no profanity, etc. Which I think is awesome!

My best friend also agrees with me that these books would make a really good movie :)

Possibly I'll write a better review. Maybe.

I typically don't read "chick lit." I've never even read a Princess Diaries book. But, Calonita might visit my middle school in March, so I had to check out Secrets of My Hollywood Life. I chose the third book in the series (because that's the only one I had) and was pleasantly surprised. I think this will be a good fit for my Clique readers that are looking for another series. The storyline is tame enough and the main protagonist too much of a good girl to slump the series in the same category as Gossip Girls. But, there's enough celebrity name dropping and mention of designer names to keep middle grade readers of this genre happy.

I plan on buying a few copies of books 1 - 4 for my library.

Another cute read. I liked how this one extended a bit more beyond Hollywood and introduced a new scheming character.

I'm curious as to how the series will shift now.

Still love Austin to pieces. I must say, I'm also glad the author made him a character that is genuinely cute and sweet. He's not dark, twisted and broody (which seems to be the popular thing these days) nor is he an arrogant scene-stealer eager to be in the lights. You just like him since he's so adorable.

I love that she channeled Lindsay Lohan for Alexis - the whole thing just screamed it. I think that's what makes the books so much fun: she uses the Hollywood world we already know and gives us a glimpse with a fictional character.

Family Affairs is the 3rd book in a series of books called "Secrets of My Hollywood Life". I just finished this one, and I agree with another source that this is the best one in the series so far. After filming her last movie, Pretty Young Assassins, Kaitlin is back on her famous TV show "Family Affairs". But their is a new addition to the Family Affairs cast, who is making the show's ratings soar upward. Although Alexis, who plays the new character Colby, on Kaitlin's show seems sweet at first, Kaitlin and Sky realize there is more to her than that. Really good!!!

We got a new villain! I might have stopped reading these if this was just another book about all the crazy mean things Sky was doing to Kaitlin. Instead, they got a common enemy and were finally able to bury the hatchet! I was very pleased with the progress, though I do find it kinda stale that there has to be someone over-the-top bad in these stories.

So filming has resumed for Kaitlin's TV show, Family Affair, and the new plot twist is a character who may (Or may not) end up being Sam and Sara (Kaitlin and Sky) sister. Alexis is the new girl playing Colby, and it didn't take long for Kaitlin to realize this girl was trouble. At first she thought that she might just be jealous (when Alexis's first episode aired, she was an instant overnight success and was on all the talk shows and gossip rags) but she realized something fishy was up. And when bad press (fake bad press) started showing up, Kaitlin at first thought it was Sky as usual but then she realized Sky was also getting hit by a lot of bad press. They both quickly realized Alexis was the cause.

Meanwhile Kaitlin's friends (Liz, Liz's boyfriend Josh, and Kaitlin's boyfriend Austin) are all doing well but are busy with SAT prep and driver's ed. Kaitlin is kinda feeling left out so she starts studying for SATs and tries to arrange her own driver's education experience (and it's a total fail, paparazzi hiding in the back and her instructor recording everything she said).

Things on set aren't going well either. Alexis quickly buttered up the writers and other key people and was causing major delays insisting on different dialog or wardrobes. She had most everyone fooled but as time went on, more and more people started to see what was really going on. But the show was taking brutal hits from the media about the delays and the cost of those delays. Everyone was stressed.

It all came to a head when Kaitlin was given a last minute script update which said that Sara and Sam had been switched at birth and really weren't a part of this family, but Colby was. Essentially writing Kaitlin and Sky out of the show. They both lost it. They were told to film the scene and both refused without Tom (their head writer and producer) confirming this was truly what was happening. No one could reach him so Kaitlin and Sky committed a major Hollywood no-no and walked off the set. (and went and sang karaoke, but that's irrelevant).

At the end of it all, Tom was furious about the script. He was determined to find out who sent it out and have them fired. So Kaitlin's job was safe, until Tom call her and Sky into his office. On the way they saw Alexis and one of the writers (Max) fighting (and kinda making out) and they heard that she asked him to write that different ending as a joke, and unbeknown to him she then made copies and handed them out to everyone. He was pissed he might lose his job because of her. (He did). Sky and Kaitlin told Tom but he already had figured it out. But he broke the news to them that Melli (the mother and main star of the show) had decided to quit and he also felt like it was time for the show to end. So this was to be the show's last season. Tom quickly wrote out Alexis's character so her toxic presence was soon gone and the main cast could focus on a great rest of their final season.

Now that Kaitlin doesn't have her show, she's realized her future is wide open. Does she try a new TV series? Go for movies? What kind of movies? Or maybe take a break and go to college? Guess we need to keep reading to find out what she does next!

PS She and Sky didn't become BFFs over the Alexis issue, but they are now comfortable being around each other. I was very happy with this development. And Austin threw her a birthday party with JUST her friends and family and she couldn't have been happier.

Okay so I loved this one a lot. No misunderstanding in the romance, we have enemies teaming up to fight a greater evil. the middle has some stupidness on the middle with the driving instructor bit, a bit was soooo easy to spot as a bad idea that I have to remind myself that Kate is a teen and a teen that has never had to parce out a trap. It works out because it sets up for her series long arch of growth an independence. this is really the 1st time I'm seeing this book with its inspiration: the princess diaries. I really feel like we've hit see legs

Kaitlin Matures!

Yep, in this book Kaitlin and Sky both grow up a lot. And just when you think things are going to get settled, they get worse.

To me, this is the best book in the series, thus far. Why? Kaitlin has growing pains, but she doesn't have problems with Austin. And Austin is an awesome boyfriend. Better than ever before.

And Family Affairs is going to go through a lot in this book and it's going to have an interesting denouement.

Kaitlin is back filming the series she has been on since she was four, but there are serious problems arising with a new guest star who is slated to play in the first 13 episodes of the season. She is as nasty and manipulative as they come, and not above doing anything she can to get ahead in Hollywood in her first role. To be honest, not everything is entirely believable--new guest star rocks to such heights after two episodes on a show, but then this is a y/a novel.

I’m really loving my reread of this series! I love that Kaitlin and Sky’s relationship starts to change in this one as they band together against Alexis. The story is fun and exciting I’m so many ways, and through it all Kaitlin had Austin to lean against. I love seeing them stronger together and happy.
The pacing in this one is good, and I like the catty mean girl plot with Alexis. I enjoyed reading about the characters on sweet and leaning more secrets about Hollywood!

I think these books are just fun. I like the different characters. The stories are quick and easy and are just a fun way to spend a few hours.

I would love to know who the author would cast for each of the characters.

I really had fun with this book, Kaitlin and Sky made me laugh through out it. I love seeing the little Hollywood facts and getting behind the scenes, along with seeing the scripts and magazine pages. I can't wait to see what Kaitlin is up to in the next three books.

I think this is my favorite of the series so far. I liked seeing Kaitlin on set and her life while working in TV. Her and Austin are cute and her and Sky even become sort of friends in this book. Matty grew on me while I was reading this book. Like everyone else I was not an Alexis fan, but then again you're not supposed to like her. The conflict and drama in this book felt a bit more real to me.

MVPs: Sky and Matty.

I love these silly books. This one somehow manages to crank the drama up even HIGHER than the last, but I love the plot point of ending the show the main character has been on forever. It shows real investment in the storyline, and I can't remember anything about book four, so I'm in for a treat!

I have now caught up with this series. I really shouldn't read series out-of-order, but in this case it didn't threw off the entire read for me. In Family Affairs, Kaitlin and Sky have returned to the set of their hit television show to face a new villain, Alexis, the new actress hired to shake up the storyline a little bit. There is also a whole new group of writers hired to help keep the show as a top ten. Matty is also joining the cast. Alexis seems to be the greatest new addition to the family until she begins to bash her co-workers and throw tantrums on set. Kaitlin and Sky have to set aside their differences and work together in order to take Alexis down from the pedestal she seems to be on and save their jobs. Also, Kaitlin wants to learn how to drive and make Austin's birthday the best ever. How can our shining star handle all of this stress without losing her mind? Will her career make it through another scandal raised by a co-worker?
Calonita always provides a fun read that is intriguing and grips the audience into the drama. Her little Hollywood secrets provide interesting advice for those that are always wishing to hit the big time. It gives the audience a quick peak into the life of those stars that we just love to follow in entertainment magazines. Kaitlin is a lovable character that is a good role model for teens. She is in love with a boyfriend that she is not having sex with (rare it seems in YA novels currently) and she is rich but not involved in drugs or other unattractive activities. It's rare to find a heroine that is fun to read about and still believe that they are a good example that kids can relate to. One of my favorite parts of this novel is when Kaitlin attempts to figure out if Austin is telling her that he loves her, or if he is just making one of those statements. I think we all have those moments where we are trying to dissect one thing that is said to draw out the intention and the meaning. Relating to the characters in this story makes it a quick read that I would recommend to girls ages 10-14.

SUMMARY: Kaitlyn Burke is a Hollywood actress. There is this new girl on FA, her name is Alexis. Matty, Kaitlyn's brother, likes Alexis. Sky and Kaitlyn find out that Alexis wants to get rid of Sky and Kaitlyn. Tom, the director of FA, doesn't believe them. Kaitlyn is getting all these lies with the press. Somebody was doing it, it was Alexis. Tom finally believes Sky and Kaitlyn, but there was a catch. Melli, Paige on FA and also main character, said she wanted to quit. She wanted to quit because she was getting old and she never sees her children. Melli and Tom made a pack that says: if Melli or Tom leaves FA the other one has to leave with them. The ending was sad because Melli and Tom were leaving and FA was going off the air.
MAIN CHARACTERS: Kaitlyn Burke is a Hollywood actress for Family Affairs. She has a boyfriend named Austin. Her mother is her manager that likes to over protect her. Sky Mackenzie is also a Hollywood actress on FA. The new girl on FA, Alexis, she hates so much. Sky is 19 years old. Austin is KAitlyn's boyfriend. He plays lacrosse. He goes to Beecher Prep. He is not an actor like Kaitlyn and Sky.
SETTING OF BOOK: The setting of the book is in L.A, California
CONFLICT: The conflict is that Alexis Holden is trying to get rid of Kaitlyn and Sky, so Alexis can be the only actress great in FA.
RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT: Sky and Kaitlyn tell Alexis to back off. Alexis doesn't and she makes a fake script for everybody saying: Kailtlyn and Sky are going off the show. Kaitlyn and Sky tells Tom about the situation and fires Alexis.
MAIN IDEA: The main idea is Alexis Holden is trying to get rid of Kaitlyn and Sky so Alexis can be the biggest pop star.
OPINION OF BOOK: My opinion of the book is that it was fabulous! I loved this book better than any other book I have read.
RECOMMENDATION: You should all read this book because it is really good. You all should read the whole series and they will be great!!
