A riveting thriller that puts the New York Times bestselling author squarely in the same league as Patricia Cornwell and Jefferson Bass, the Locard Institute Thriller series draws on Lisa Black’s real-life scientific expertise and her skill in crafting complex and dynamic female characters, as two female forensic experts team up to solve the deadliest and most devious crimes.

For software pioneer Martin Post, the third richest man in America, his private compound on the Florida coast is a sunny no-man’s-land separating his family from the rest of the world. Now, expert forensic analysts Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies of the renowned Locard Institute have been summoned to its dark side.

Martin’s pregnant daughter, Ashley, had ventured on a day trip in her motorboat into the Gulf, only to wash up dead on a nearby shore. Although the local coroner determined her death was an accident, Ellie and Rachael soon confirm Martin’s gravest fear: His daughter was murdered. Was it a kidnapping gone wrong? Or something even more brutal? Ashley and her husband, Greg, had been working working with Martin on a revolutionary new defense initiative for the US military – could espionage have played a part in her death? Martin believes Greg is behind the murder, and the spoiled charmer does set off Rachel’s deception radar. If the widower didn’t kill Ashley himself, why isn’t he more upset that she’s dead?

Drawn into the Posts’ increasingly dangerous family dynamic, Ellie and Rachael must work hard and fast to discover what secrets are buried at the heart of the crime. Because the churning waters of the Gulf are getting rougher. And soon, Ellie and Rachael themselves will be in danger of getting crushed in their depths.

The third book in Lisa Black’s Locard Institute thriller series is The Deepest Kill . Once again, she provides great characterization, suspense, and multiple mysteries in this crime thriller that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. Once again, the author’s expertise and background in forensics brings realism to the story.

Dr. Rachael Davies and Dr. Ellie Carr, forensic analysts from the Locard Institute, have taken on a client in Florida. Software pioneer Martin Post’s daughter Ashley had taken a day trip in her motorboat, went missing, and has been found dead on a nearby shore. The local medical examiner has ruled Ashley’s death an accident, but Martin doesn’t believe it. Since Martin has been working on a new defense initiative for the US military, the FBI is also involved.

Ellie is a complex character. She recently left her job with the FBI’s Evidence Response Team after divorcing a co-worker. She’s analytical, outwardly friendly and outgoing, but somewhat insecure. Change stresses her. Readers learn more of Ellie’s childhood during this novel. Rachel is empathetic, a former Washington D.C. medical examiner, and is currently the assistant dean of education at the Locard Institute. She’s also very good at detecting deception.

The riveting story arc immediately grabbed my attention and kept me engaged throughout the book. It’s descriptive without slowing the pace and well-plotted with some unpredictable moments and red herrings in the story. Readers interested in all aspects of forensics will find something of interest in this book. I found it fascinating to view a case from this perspective. The tension level varies throughout the novel which has several action scenes interspersed with investigations and interviews. The author vividly portrayed the private estate where Martin and his family lived on the Gulf coast near Naples, Florida. My biggest quibble relates to the ending. It seemed rather abrupt with several items not completely resolved. However, the main mystery is resolved. Themes include death, grief, forensics, family, secrets, hatred, resentment, and money.

Overall, this was a story that demanded my attention throughout the book. Those who enjoy the analytical and scientific side of mysteries will likely enjoy this novel with its intriguing and engrossing mystery along with well-developed characters. While this novel can be read as a stand-alone, readers will gain a better understanding of the key characters and their backgrounds if they read the series in order.

Kensington Books and Lisa Black provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for February 20, 2024.

When Martin Post’s pregnant only daughter, Ashley, goes missing on her boat in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, it captivates the nation. This is in large part because Martin isn’t just any normal father—he’s also the third richest man in the country. Founder of OakTree and their proprietary technology, he’s also in the midst of several new projects, including one that could protect the United States with a brand-new strategic defense initiative the likes that no one has ever heard of before.

When Ashley’s body is found on shore not far from Martin’s own compound, though, his world quickly implodes. Already on the scene, the FBI investigates and rules it an accidental drowning. Martin, however, thinks something far more sinister might have happened, so he hires Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr to do their own inquiry of the case. Expert forensic analysts from the renowned Locard Institute, if anything did happen, surely they will be able to uncover it poste haste.

Arriving in Florida, Rachael and Ellie get straight to work. Not twenty-four hours into their investigation, however, they confirm Martin’s worst fear. It was indeed murder. So perhaps he was also correct on the perpetrator as well. Ashley’s husband, Greg, seems a likely suspect, after all. And he has hardly been acting overly distressed at the death of his young wife and their unborn baby. Is he really as cold-hearted as he seems? And did he actually play a part in her untimely demise?

At the same time, however, Rachael and Ellie can’t eliminate the possibility of espionage either. With OakTree’s possible defense system contract up for bid with the government, another country or corporation could also be to blame. And then there’s the potential for a kidnapping gone wrong given Martin’s exorbitant wealth. What happened to Ashley? Why was she killed? And will Rachael and Ellie be able to solve the case before more blood is shed?

Holy cow! The third book in the Locard Institute series, The Deepest Kill grabbed me and didn’t let go. While I didn’t realize this was part of a series, I found that it was perfectly fine to read as a stand-alone. Although, I do have to say that I’m sure I missed out on some rather significant character growth and other hinted at backstories. All I know is that I’m definitely going to go back and read the two prior books now. After all, I was utterly blown away by this dynamite plot.

As I mentioned, I was lacking in any prior knowledge of the characters and their histories. From what I could grasp, however, I still got quite the download of information, especially about Ellie. Complex and wholly true-to-life, I got sucked into her persona before I could blink. I particularly loved her relationships with her partner in crime and the FBI agent in charge. Now I’m looking forward to learning more about all of the above when I check out the first two books in the series.

As for the plot, it had me flying through the pages. Mixing interesting tidbits about forensics into an escalating storyline, this was an interesting angle on a standard crime fiction novel cum forensic thriller. But what really kept me engaged was the ever ratcheting suspense, careful plotting, and adrenaline-fueled action that ran throughout the top-notch story arc. The only piece that rankled quite a bit was the conclusion. Abrupt and thoroughly unexplored, while the case was resolved, there were so many other pieces that were left up in the air that it left me mildly disappointed.

All in all, however, the surprising twists and turns, sharp writing, and thoroughly likeable characters (with one deliciously unlikeable one thrown in for good measure), made this book a win in the end. Now I can’t wait to rush out and grab the first two novels in this series. Between the fast-paced plot and accurate scientific details, there simply wasn’t much missing. Well, except for the ending, but I’ll happily overlook that little indiscretion. So take it from me, this is one series you’re going to want to check out. Rating of 4.5 stars.

Thank you to Lisa Black and Kensington Books for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

This is book 3 in the Locard Institute series and I am definitely continuing to enjoy it. I did think this one moved a little slower than the last, but I thought it was a good mystery. I really like both Dr. Rachael Davies and Dr. Ellie Carr and I hope they have more mysteries to solve in their future. Dr. Davies and Dr. Carr are called in by the second richest man because he doesn’t believe the death of his daughter was an accident like the initial autopsy indicated. Teaming with the FBI they begin investigating when the second autopsy indicates a question of foul play. This series is definitely more heavy on the forensic side which I think makes it different than most similar books and genres. I wasn’t super surprised by the twist at the end, but I thought it was a good wrap up of the mystery at hand.

THE DEEPEST KILL (A Locard Institute Thriller Book #3) by Lisa Black is another exciting crime thriller in the Locard Institute series featuring two female forensic experts who unite to solve deadly crimes from all over the country. While this is the third book in the series, they can all be read as standalone stories, but you continue to learn more about each of the main protagonists’ personal lives and backgrounds in each and I have enjoyed reading them in published order for that reason.

Dr. Rachel Davies and Dr. Ellie Carr, from the Locard Institute travel to Florida when they are hired by software billionaire Martin Post. Post does not believe his daughter’s death was an accident even though that was the local M.E.’s determination. All the evidence points to the son-in-law who claims his innocence, but Rachel and Ellie continue to discover small inconsistencies. With each new discovery, Rachel and Ellie put themselves in the crosshairs of a killer who will stop at nothing to obtain their goals.

This is a crime thriller that pulled me in right from the start. The peril and suspense in the plot continue to escalate throughout with plenty of twists and red herrings. The clues Rachel and Ellie discovered along the way were intriguing and display the ingenuity of the author’s experience in the forensics field. Intertwined with the crime thriller plot were revelations from Ellie’s past, both personal and about her mother’s death. I felt there was an excellent balance between character development, crime plot, and description of forensics in this addition to the series.

I highly recommend this exciting crime thriller, the entire Locard Institute Thriller series, and this author.

The Deepest Kill by Lisa Black is the third in the Locard Institute thriller series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Kensington Books, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background: (May contain spoilers from previous books)
Dr. Rachel Davies (a former forensic pathologist) is the assistant director of The Locard Institute which conducts research in forensic topics, from ballistics to DNA analysis, and trains scientists and technicians and law enforcement personnel from around the world.  They have state-of-the-art technology available, and are often in demand.   Dr. Ellie Carr, a forensic scientist for the FBI in DC, is joining the staff at Locard.   Her mother died when she was 4, and she lived with her grandmother til she was 9, then with her Aunt Rosalie until she was 12, her Uncle Terry & Aunt Katie until she was 16, then Uncle Paul and Aunt Joana until she married Adam, who she recently divorced.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
The third richest man in America, Martin Post, calls Ellie and Rachel to his home in Florida's gulf coast to look into the death of his daughter.  Ashley, an experienced boater and swimmer, was four months pregnant when she went for a boat ride that ended in disaster.  Her body washed  up on shore two weeks later.  It looks like an accident, but her father is suspicious.  He wants Ellie and Rachel to determine the real cause of death.

Rachel and Ellie confirm that yes, his daughter was murdered...now they just have to find the perpetrator.  Martin is sure it is his son-in-law, Greg.  But why?  Does his mistress have anything to do with it?  Maybe it has to do with the new defense program that they are working on for the US Military?  Could it be espionage?  A botched kidnapping?

There's definitely a strange family dynamic, with Martin over-seeing every move that everyone makes, and his "trophy" wife Dani going along with it all.  Even Ashley had no qualms about living under her father's roof.

Both Rachel and Ellie find themselves in trouble over this one.

My Opinions:
This was really interesting, with a few a few despicable characters, and a few twists.

Again, the author provide a lot of technical forensic and medical issues, but explained everything very well.  Her expertise shone through.

Both Rachel and Ellie are interesting characters, and we've learned a little more about Ellie's past. However, there are still questions to be answered.  I also like Michael, and assume he will get together with Ellie at some point....and for a change I'm hoping that romance happens.

On the downside, it was a overly-detailed (again).  The perpetrator was not a surprise.  And I I hated the ending....it left so many unanswered questions.  It was also really abrupt.

So overall, while there were some things I disliked, the book was good, and I will continue with the series.

The Deepest Kill by Lisa Black is an excellent, heart-stopping forensic mystery/thriller featuring two complex female protagonists. This is very highly recommended and the third novel in the Locard institute series.

Dr. Ellie Carr and Dr. Rachael Davies, forensic experts at the Locard Institute, are called by billionaire Martin Post, the genius behind OakTree software design, to his compound on the Florida Gulf Coast. Martin's pregnant daughter, Ashley, has been found dead. She had taken out her boat into the Gulf, went missing, and her body washed up on the shore. Martin wants Ellie and Rachel in on the autopsy and investigation to make sure every angle is looked into. The two quickly determine her death was murder. Ashley's husband, Greg, is naturally a suspect, but her murder could also be due to the project she was working on for OakTree. FBI agents Michael Tyler and Luis Alvarez are also on the scene investigating.

The writing is exceptional in this compelling, engrossing story with a fast and riveting plot. As the facts are uncovered in the investigation and interviews in each chapter, the list of suspects grows. More details from Ellie's childhood are also revealed along with the elements from the investigation. Ellie and Rachel have various complicated pieces and clues to investigate. All the intricacies add depth and interest to the narrative while the two try to follow their knowledge and intuition to untangle the many pieces of their investigation.

The Locard Institute series continues to be a very appealing and highly rated series for me and I look forward to another installment of the series. The Deepest Kill can be read as a stand-alone novel although those following the series will appreciate the new insight and development of characters. Both Ellie and Rachel are complex, interesting fully-realized characters. It was such a pleasure to follow them along as they investigated a new case. The other characters in The Deepest Kill are also well-developed and intriguing

Anyone who appreciates novels with details about the forensics and scientific details involved in an investigation along with strong, competent female characters will enjoy The Deepest Kill. I'm anxiously awaiting their next case. Thanks to Kensington for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

Interesting addition to the series. Not a white knuckle page turner but good for a weekend read. There were loose ends -- like the whole "cliffhanger" scenario about Ellie's mother. Those kinds of loose threads are more annoying than compelling to buy the next book. And the ending....it's like Black got bored and just cut it off. I've seen this happen so many times with the third or fourth book in a series. It's like the original momentum of the author falls off and they're not sure where to go but they have a contract to write something. If a series continues they seem to pick up after that so I will read the next one.

Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies are forensics experts at the Locard Institute and they have been summoned to South Florida by the third richest person in the US, Martin Post. Martins pregnant daughter, Ashley, was missing after taking her boat out in the Gulf. Two weeks later her body was found, ‘supposedly’ she fell from her boat and drowned. But Martin thinks she may been murdered, and called in Ellie and Racheal to use their talents to see if his suspicions are correct. The book definitely held my interest throughout, but the ending was filled with high octane excitement.

The third book of the Locard Institute series, The Deepest Kill finds the two protagonists, Rachael and Ellie embroiled in a tangle of lead lines searching for the killer of a wealthy inventor's daughter. The possible suspects are varied and include the victim's husband.

This is my first read by Lisa Black and I had no trouble reading it as a stand-alone, though I will catch up with the first two books soon. The plot was torn from the evening news: family jealousies, high tech military involvement, an overly demanding parent, a possible kidnapping gone wrong. I found that to be challenging.

I enjoy learning about the "why" and "how" of things , so the technical descriptions were of particular interest. That really clarified certain things for me. This was a fast moving plot littered with red herrings and switch ups for those who enjoy crime solving.

I recommend this book to readers of thrillers, mysteries, crime---you will not be disappointed.

Billionaire software mogul Martin Post asks forensics experts Ellie Carr and Rachel Davies of the Locard Institute to investigate the suspicious drowning death of his daughter Ashley near their Florida costal home. Was it really an accident or something more sinister?

This was hard to put down. Much more scientific than a lot of forensic thrillers and loved the Cleveland connection.

I hadn’t read the first two in the series but am definitely going to! Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for an early review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A software mogul worth more zeros than I can fathom has lost his only child to an apparent boating accident. Storms aren’t unusual in the gulf waters off the Florida coast. He has reached out to two doctors from the acclaimed Locard Institute, Rachael and Ellie. He wants them to take a second look at his pregnant daughter’s death so he hires them as consultants. His private island type estate is secure and isolated. There is the younger second wife/step mother, a husband who isn’t grieving the loss of his wife or unborn child and a high tech electronic assistant that’s just plane creepy. There are a couple of FBI agents stumbling and bumbling around.
There’s an astronomical government contract on the line. The type that makes or breaks a company. The DOD is very interested in this new technology. Could there be a competitive company to blame for the boating accident? The Locard team will need every bit of talent they can muster to solve this and not become a target themselves along the way.
I had a pretty solid theory early on in the plot, which didn’t deter me from finishing at breakneck speed to see if I guessed correctly. I’ve enjoyed this series and hope there’ll be more. The plot was interesting, the role of the father, and the of Florida's Gulf coast.
Here was a father that was wanting true answers to his daughter's
death. Before giving in to the sorrow of the lost and the child.
Hiring the two female..forensic experts Ellie and Rachael to exam her
body. They soon knew it was murder, proof was now needed. The setting
of Florida Gulf Coast and details of a storm added the emotion to the story
A good tense plot that build's to the end was well done, and I enjoyed

I think that Lisa Black is hitting her stride with the latest Locard Institute book. I read this over a weekend (I can consider it preparation for my Forensic Science class, can't I?), and couldn't put it down. It was doubly engaging since I could relate to the science described in the book. Love the hints dropped about Ellie's parents, and can't wait to see how the series develops.

I enjoyed this third book in the Locard Institute series. Martin Post, one of the richest men in America, daughter is found dead off the coast of Florida. It’s up to Ellie and Rachel to discover if it’s murder and who did it. I have to say I was surprised when the book ended I thought there must have been more pages that I missed. There was definitely more I wanted wrapped up.

Michael Post, the third richest man in the United States, summons Dr. Rachel Davies and Dr. Ellie Carr of the Locard Institute to his home to determine if his daughter Ashley died accidently or was murdered. He believes that his son-in-law Greg Anderson somehow killed her, but her body had been in the water of the Gulf of Mexico for over her week, her unborn child gone from her body and a strange nick on her vertebra. As Rachel and Ellie use their forensic expertise, they discover that Ashley was indeed murdered, but who, how, and why remain to be answered. Was it her father? The stepmother? The husband? Someone from a competitor wanting the SDI technology that Ashley was working on for her father?

Rachel and Ellie are interesting characters, and Black gives us more of Ellie's unusual history and the mystery of her mother's death when Ellie was four. Black weaves an interesting plot with twists I did not anticipate. I look forward to the next book in the series.

With The Deepest Kill Lisa Black shows that she deserves to be among the premier authors of the murder/mystery genre. From the first page we step into a world with uberwealth, a pregnant missing heiress, and, later, possible technical espionage.

Tech mogul Martin Post, along with his trophy wife Dani, want answers about his daughter Ashley’s death, originally labeled an accident but highly suspicious. Thus the Locard Institute is called to look into the matter with two of its ace forensic investigators, Rachael Davies and Ellie Carr, who bring their own personal emotional baggage to the case. Through them Black’s forensic expertise becomes obvious, and it enhances our understanding of the investigative process. Even secondary characters FBI agents Michael Tyler and Luis Alvarez provide an interesting juxtaposition to the female leads.

The list of potential suspects grows chapter by chapter as the plot swerves and turns through new discoveries. Heading the list is the disliked and distrusted widower/son-in-law Greg Anderson, but is he capable of murdering his pregnant wife?

The fast-paced well textured plot is not bogged down by the technical asides and backstory digressions, which do not detract but rather flesh out the characters to help us understand their comments and actions. This is where backstory digressions really add to the character development. Nothing escapes Rachael and Ellie’s exceptional abilities.
In addition, Black paints incredibly detailed word pictures, which put us right in the plot locations. Some passages are visual feasts.

Overall The Deepest Kill is a top-notch murder tale with a thriller pace. As with most of Black’s novels, the last thirty or so pages are packed with non-stop action. This is a wonderful read.

The Deepest Kill by Lisa Black
Locard Institute #3

Was it really an accident…or was it murder? That is what Martin Post needs to know about his recently deceased daughter SO he calls in the Locard Institute experts to find out.

What I liked:
* Dr. Ellie Carr: left FBI to work for Locard Institute, crime scene analyst, scientist, divorced, and from previous books know that she purchased a house, took in a rescue dog not mentioned in this book so wonder who is watching it, had a difficult backstory
* Dr. Rachel Davies: assistant director of Locard Institute, bright, single parent to deceased sister’s toddler, counts on her mother for childcare, left job as medical examiner to work at Locard Institute, divorced
* The plot, pacing, setting in Florida, writing – plenty of twists and turns
* The forensic information I learned and how it tied into this case
* FBI agents Michael Tyler and Luis Alvarez who were in the last book and showed up again in this one – wondering if perhaps Michael is interested in Ellie
* Thinking about wealth and how it motivated some in this story
* Wondering if or when Ellie might l earn more about how her mother died and what if any impact it will have on her
* Having a feeling I knew who the murderer was when that person showed up and then being validated at the end of the story
* The title of the book and how it tied into the story

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The reasoning behind the murderers decision to kill…such a waste…
* The ending…though it completes the story, would have liked to have one more chapter, I think

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC this is my honest review.

Tech mogul Martin Post, one of the wealthiest men in America, has hired the Locard Institute, which specialises in forensic science, to look into the death of his beloved pregnant daughter, Ashley after her body was found washed up on the shore near Martin’s estate.

Ashley’s mother died eight years ago when she was seventeen, and now Ashley and her husband, Greg Anderson both live and work on Martin’s huge private estate on the coast of Florida. The morning she died, Ashley took her boat out into the Gulf, as she did every day, to work on her laptop in the peace and tranquillity of the water, somehow falling into the water, and drowning after sustaining a head injury. The county coroner has ruled Ashley’s death an accident, but Martin is not convinced and has hired ex-medical examiner, Dr Rachel Davies, and ex-FBI agent, Dr Ellie Carr from the Locard to perform a second autopsy and review the investigation to look for signs of foul play.

Martin’s company, Oak Tree is in the final stages of putting together a huge defense proposal for the US Department of Defence and he is concerned that Ashley’s death might have been orchestrated by one of his competitors or even a foreign power in order to scupper his chance at winning the massive contract.

Although the characters and their backstories have been mostly fleshed out in the previous books of the series, this novel can be read as a stand-alone as there is sufficient description to enable readers to form a good picture of Rachael as a strong and confident leader, and Ellie, who is often unsure of herself and easily stressed, she is braver than she thinks. The mystery is carefully plotted with false leads and unexpected twists leading to a gradual uncovering of secrets and Lisa Black’s professional knowledge of forensic science adding scientific authenticity. Like the waters of the Gulf in the impending storm, their investigation becomes turbulent and dangerous as the pressure ramps up and a very atmospheric climax perfectly wraps up this compelling thriller.

Docs Elle & Rachael from the Locard Institute are called by a Florida billionaire to look into the death of his daughter Ashley. Martin Post, his wife Dani, Ashley & husband Greg all live in the same secluded mansion on the coast. It also comes to light that Martin knew Elle's Uncle Paul, met her mother and has information relating to her death (suppose that's another book in the series).

Rachael's second autopsy reveals a previously unseen mark that indicates trauma to the spine. They conclude murder, not accidental death and immediately the husband is the suspect. Enter the FBI to help as Post is in the midst of a large scale bid for a new govt security system.

As they get closer and find more details it seems maybe someone else did the deed and of course Elle & Rachael end up fighting for their lives. The doer wasn't a surprise to me as there weren't that many suspects to choose from so the answer was obvious. The gory descriptions of Ashley's second autopsy were not fun to read.

The Deepest Kill by Lisa Black is the third installment in the Locard Institute series. It could be read as a standalone, but readers would benefit from the backstory in the first books.

Drs Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies are called to help investigate the death of the daughter of one of the richest men in the country, Martin Post, a tech genius working on a top secret middle defense system. Did Ashley faint from her boat and drown, an unfortunate accident, or was she murdered?

I enjoyed this book and the forensic science tidbits interspersed throughout. Theresa first half was definitely slower than the second with bits of Ellie’s past sprinkled in. I am really intrigued to see where Ellie’s story goes in the future.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Kensington books, Lisa Black, and Netgalley.

The daughter of one of the richest men in the world dies under mysterious circumstances. He hires Ellie Carr and Rachael Davies of the Locard Institute to look into the case. Ellie’s and Rachael’s investigation reveal the daughter was murdered, and the husband is the prime suspect. As Ellie and Rachael continue their investigation, the question is will they find the truth, or will the truth place them in danger.

I enjoy Lisa Black’s detailed and accurate description of how crime scenes are processed and the clues they provide to investigators. And yet, this novel provides suspense and surprises. A great book for crime buffs.

Having barely made it through the previous installment in the series, What Harms You, which nearly became a DNF, I hesitated before diving into this latest offering.

Thankfully, The Deepest Kill opened with a slightly more promising start. Yet, the author’s fondness for excessive detail veers into overkill. Yes, I appreciate thoroughness, but do I need a description of a bathroom faucet?

And then there’s the unnecessary filler that weighs down the narrative. Additionally, inconsistencies crop up all over the place, and the plotting takes shortcuts, leaving me wondering how to connect the dots.

This is where I will be jumping off the Lisa Black / Locard train.

This is my first book in the series, so there were a few references I did not get. Overall, this was not a particular problem. This is basically a mix of "Bones" and "Silent Witness". The adult daughter of the third-richest man disappears in the Gulf of Mexico. Her boat and then her body are found. Accident, suicide, or murder? He requests the aid of two forensic experts, Ellie Carr and Rachel Davies.

Good mysteries with several possible killers and overlapping story lines. Look forward to reading the first two.

Forensic experts Ellie Carr and Rachel Davies use the scientific resources of the Lockahrt Institue to solve the mystery of disappearance and subsequent murder of tech multi-billionaire Martin Post's daughter Ashley.

Traveling to the Gulf Coast of Florida, the two scientists use their incredible skills to follow all the leads, examine clues, and eliminate (but not necessarily kill) suspects. The ending is scary, leaving the reader breathless.

This intense thriller will fill a rainy afternoon or a sunny beach day.

I can't believe I sat through this book and waiting and waiting for the end to just abruptly drop off the edge of the cliff with in my view no conclusion. Do I have to wait for the next installment for the end to this one? Disappointed. A page and a half of an epilogue would have worked to wrap this up. Other than this, I found the book somewhat entertaining and a fast read once I got through a lot of the filler and descriptions. Wish I could give 3-1/2 stars cuz it wasn't a 3 but not really a 4.

Dr Carr and Dr Davies are called by the third richest man in America to find out the truth behind his daughters death. I enjoy the working relationship between the two. They work well together.
This had a very interesting plot line, but it got a little too technical for me at times. I was shocked by the ending.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the chance to read and review this one.

Lisa Black's third Locard Institute tale is a great read. As always, her forensics provide a realistic, rich depth to the story. I always learn something in each of her books. Of course, I am not sure I would be comfortable in an autopsy suite with the 'critters' coming closer. Rachel and Ellie are becoming richer in development in each Locard installment. I think the best mystery to come will be Ellie's tale. I wonder how much longer we will have to wait, hopefully not too long.

I have read all of Lisa Black’s books but the Locard Institute books are brilliantly written. The Deepest Kill gives a little more background into Ellie’s background. The homicide that Ellie and Rachael have been called in to seems like an open and shut case but evolves into quite the twist with multiple possible killers. Lisa does an amazing job with the forensics in her books-as a forensic scientist myself, I appreciate the great job that she does in writing about forensic science. She is definitely one of my Must Read authors.
